THE SHAWANO LEADER

Outlaws returns for 7th straight year

Local drivers test
chances against
Late Models best

sports@wolfrivermedia.com

The World of Outlaws Late

Model Series returns to the Shawano Speedway on Aug. 2 for the
seventh consecutive year, bringing along some of the nations top
drivers.
Fifteen World of Outlaws racers have competed in each and
every race across the country
this season, and Outlaws regulars have won 23 of the series 24
races heading into a two-week
break, from July 15-28.
Last years Sun Drop Shootout
winner, Shane Clanton, and this
seasons World of Outlaws points
leader, Josh Richards, have combined to win 15 of the 24 races in
the Outlaws series.

A handful of local competitors

will look for a shot to take down
the favorites in Shawano.
The half-mile track is a favorite among the traveling series
drivers, as it gives them the distance and the space to use the
speed of their 800-horsepower,
open-motor engines.
Shawano-area drivers, however, have attained some success
in previous years with top-10 finishes against the Outlaws.
Headlining the local contingent are AJ Diemel, Ron Berna
and Mike Mullen, among others.
They will face off against Clanton,
Richards, Pennsylvania native
Rick Eckert, Georgias Brandon
Overton and Illinois Brian Shirley all five have at least 10 top10 finishes in the series and
more.
Clanton took the Outlaws title
last season, the first World of Outlaws championship of his career,
while Richards won his third Outlaws title in 2013 and is on pace

for his fourth this season.

Richards leads Clanton by 224
points with roughly one month remaining in the season.
About 3,000 fans are expected
at Shawano Speedway for the
Tuesday night races, and around
40 competitors are ready to take

the stage for the Late Model

showdown, which will be paired
with IMCA Modifieds and IMCA
Sport Mods races.
The Sport Mods will replace
the IMCA Stock Car races from
last season in the Sun Drop Shootout; this will be the third season

two local feature races share the

card with the World of Outlaws.
Both features will be racing for
increased purses as well.
The total purse for the Outlaws event is approximately
$60,000; the winner receives
about $10,000.

Diemel leads local contestants in Sun Drop Shootout

Each year since 2010,
the World of Outlaws Late
Model series has competed at the historic half-mile
Shawano Speedway.
In that first year, racing
legend Billy Moyer blistered the field and scored
the win. In subsequent
seasons, Kentucky racer
Darrell Lanigan won in
2011, 2012 and 2014, Pennsylvanias Greg Satterlee
picked up his first career
World of Outlaws feature
in 2013, and Georgia pilot
Shane Clanton won the
event a year ago.
The national Late Model touring series is poised
to return again this year
for the Sun Drop Shootout
on Tuesday, Aug. 2. This
years event will once
again feature many of the
most talented professional
Late Model racers in the
nation.

Richards dominating Outlaws competition

Racer has won
10 times out of
24 this season
By Chris Caporale
sports@wolfrivermedia.com

After taking the 2014

season off to make technological improvements to
his car, West Virginia native Josh Richards is back
to his winning ways in the
World of Outlaws Late
Model Series.
Once he was comfortable in his car again,
things started coming together for Richards at the
end of the 2015 season. He
finished in second place,
just 174 points behind
Shane Clanton, whose
wins included the 2015
Outlaws race at Shawano
Speedway.
Richards won his first
World of Outlaws title in
2009 at the age of 21, followed with another in 2010
and a third in 2013.
Hes on pace this year
to top all three of those

Josh Richards has raced to 10 victories on the World of Outlaws tour this season, leading the series by a commanding 224 points over Shane Clanton entering the second half of the
season, which begins on July 28.

seasons. In 40 starts this

year, he has won 16 races,
finished in the top five in 34
and in the top 10 in 39.

In Outlaws races, Richards has 10 victories and

23 top-10 finishes. His six
fastest-time awards are
triple his closest competition, Billy Moyer Jr., from
Batesville, Arkansas, and
Frank Heckenast Jr., from
Frankfort, Illinois.
This year has been
a phenomenal season,
Richards said.
His previous record for
most wins in the World of
Outlaws series was 10. He

reached that mark on July

13 at Ogilvie Raceway in
Minnesota with roughly
half the season in front of
him.
The success is not unfamiliar for the 13th-year
World of Outlaws racer.
Richards has not finished
worse than second place
in the series in each of his
past six full seasons of racing.
Running with the caliber of competition that

(World of Outlaws) is, it

forces you, you either run
it, or you go home with
your tail between your
legs, Richards said.
With nearly two weeks
off between racing, from
July 15 to July 28, Richards planned to head back
to Mountaineer country to get everything repaired and refurbished.
He planned to get back on
the track for three nights
of racing in Illinois before
heading up to the Shawano
Speedway.
After its stop in Shawano, the series will head
to New Richmond for USA
Nationals qualifying.
This is Richards fourth

visit to Shawano in the

Outlaws series. Each of his
previous races at the track
have ended in top-five finishes.
Its a bigger track than
what our average size
track would be, Richards
said. Its a fun place, and I
know its pretty fast early.
Richards, 27, who sits
224 points ahead of Clanton in the World of Outlaws
points standings, noted
that the track becomes
a little more slick as the
night goes on.
You always have to focus on your corner entries
and your speed and not
running too hard and rushing up the track, he said.

World of Outlaws Q and A

Here are some frequently asked questions
and answers about the
World of Outlaws Late
Model Series, which is
returning to Shawano
Speedway for the seventh
consecutive season on
Aug. 2.

Q
A

What is the World of

Outlaws Late Model
Series?
The World of Outlaws Late Model
Series is the nations
premier traveling tour
for dirt Late Model stock
cars. A cousin of the
longer-running World
of Outlaws series for
winged Sprint Cars that
was founded by the late
Ted Johnson in 1978, the
World of Outlaws LMS
first ran in 1988-89 under
the direction of Johnson.
The series sat dormant
until being rekindled in
2004 by the World Racing Group and has grown
in each season since
then to take its place as
the most competitive
and lucrative tour for dirt
Late Model racers.

Q
A

How long is the

season?
The World of Outlaws LMS season
traditionally opens in
mid-February before
the DIRTcar Nationals
at Volusia Speedway
Park in Barberville,
Florida, and concludes in
early November with the
World Finals, which this
year will be run from Oct.
27-29 at The Dirt Track
at Charlotte in Concord,
North Carolina. The 2016
schedule boasts nearly
50 nights of racing at
more than 34 tracks,

with track sizes ranging

from a quarter-mile to
five-eighths of a mile.

Q
A

What is a dirt Late

Model?
A dirt Late Model is
a full-bodied, purpose-built race car that
headlines arguably the
most popular dirt-track
division in the U.S. and
Canada. There is no
cubic inch limit for the
aluminum-head engines,
but most teams use
powerplants of 400-430
cubic inches that produce over 800 horsepower. Dozens of builders construct dirt Late
Model chassis, and the
bodies of the cars are
designed to resemble
popular street-car makes
from manufacturers such
as Chevrolet, Ford, Pontiac, etc. The cars weigh
2,300 pounds and run on
racing gasoline.

Q
A

Where does the World

of Outlaws Late Model
Series race?
The tour visits
tracks on the East
Coast as far north as
New York and as far
south as Florida, along
the Gulf Coast as far
west as Mississippi,
and throughout the Midwest and Great Plains.
Some of the nations
most well-known tracks
have hosted World of
Outlaws LMS events,
including Lernerville
Speedway in Sarver,
Pennsylvania, The Dirt
Track at Charlotte, Volusia Speedway Park in
Barberville, Florida, Ken
Schraders I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri,

How much does the

winner of a World of
Outlaws Late Model Series
event earn?
A standard one-day
show is headlined
by a 50-lap A-Main that
pays $10,000 to win from
a total purse of around
$50,000. There are some
shorter 40-lap events
that carry an $8,000 top
prize and several longer
multi-day, crown-jewel
races that offer blockbuster payoffs the USA
Nationals at Cedar Lake
Speedway ($50,000 to
win), the Firecracker 100
at Lernerville Speedway
($30,000), the Illini 100
at Farmer City (Illinois)
Raceway ($20,000), the
Winter Freeze at Screven

and the Hillbilly 100
($25,000) and Black Diamond 125 ($20,000) at

Tyler County Speedway

in Middlebourne, West
Virginia.

What does the World

of Outlaws Late
Model Series champion
earn?
Shane Clanton
claimed $322,320
in prize money en route
to winning the 2015 LMS
points title. The top-10
finishers in the points
standings earned nearly
$1.5 million.

Who has won

World of Outlaws
Late Model Series
championships?
Only the biggest
names in dirt Late
Model racing have been
able to join the select
group of World of Outlaws LMS title holders.
Arkansas legend Billy
Moyer holds three championships (1988, 1989,
2005). Tennessees Scott
Bloomquist won the
first crown of the tours
modern era in 2004. New
Yorker Tim McCreadie
came out on top of a
titanic six-driver battle
for the title in 2006. Kentuckys Steve Francis

broke through for his

first title in 2007 after
finishing second in the
points standings three
times. Kentuckian Darrell Lanigan set a record
for largest points margin
by a champion in 2008,
repeating as champ in
2012. West Virginian
Josh Richards became
the youngest champ in
series history in 2009 at
age 21 and then backed
it up in 2010 by putting
himself in the record
books as the only repeat champion since
the World Racing Group
began operating the
series in 2004. Longtime regular Rick Eckert
broke through for his
first crown in 2011 after
a dramatic battle with
Richards that was decided on the final lap of the
season. Richards won
it again in 2013. Dar-

rell Lanigan claimed his

third series title in 2014.
Shane Clanton won his
first series championship
in 2015.

Q
A

How do drivers earn

points toward the
championship?
Points are awarded
for A-Main and BMain finishing positions
and to drivers who enter
a program and fail to
qualify. The A-Main winner receives 150 points,
with 146 points to second place and then a
2 points-per-position
drop down for as many
finishing positions in
the event. The first nonqualifier in a B-Main receives 90 points with a 2
points-per-position drop
after that. Drivers who
do not start a B-Main
receive 60 points.

Clanton goes for repeat success in Shawano

Georgia native

Shane Clanton won the 2015 Sun Drop Shootout in Shawano, but could look for another victory at the half-mile
track to begin his late-season chase of Josh Richards.

Shane Clanton, winner

of last years Sun Drop
Shootout in Shawano,
hasnt seen the continued
success this season like
he did in 2015, but has
nearly a 90-point lead on
third place in the Outlaws
standings.
Clanton, who took the
2015 World of Outlaws
championship, trails 10race winner and lastseasons runner-up Josh
Richards by 224 points.
We just had some bad
luck leaving Florida like
Josh did last year, so its
tough to keep up what you
did last year when you
have bad luck and dont
finish races, Clanton
said.
Richards, who spent
2014 upgrading his car,
has been able to get consistent finishes on the
track. Clanton feels like
hes moving in the right di-

rection, especially with his

five wins thus far in 2016.
Clanton pointed to consistency on the track as
the main component preventing him from leading
the series, but over the
course of 2015, his car
continued to get faster. He
hasnt quite had that yet
this season.
Just seems like the
role is flipped this year,
Clanton said. (Josh) is
a little more consistent
than we are, and we are
winning. Just not winning
enough yet.
Richards has twice as
many wins (10) as Clanton
does, but Richards double-digit victories by July
13 tied Clantons complete
season mark during his
championship run. The
Zebulan, Georgia, native
tallied 34 top-five finishes
in 2015 and with 15 events
remaining, cannot top that
mark with roughly one
month left of regular racing.
Prior to 2015, Clantons
top finishes had a secondplace mark in 2006 and
back-to-back third-place
finishes in 2012 and 2013.
Clanton, who won last

years title by 174 points

over Richards, has continually come to Shawano each season with the
Outlaws and found success. After a few top-five
finishes, he finally broke
through last year to take
the victory.
Just finally put it all
together last year, and
hopefully we can do it
again this year, Clanton
said of his success in Shawano.
A win on Aug. 2 would
also be a boost to his late
push for the Outlaws
championship and slow
down Richards before
heading to New Richmond
for three nights of racing
in the USA Nationals.
We run good every
time we come up here, so
hopefully this year is no
different, Clanton said.
He believes the large,
fast track plays to his
strengths on the track,
which is why he hopes
to continue his strong
stretch of running at the
Shawano Speedway.
It just seems to fit
what we do right now, so
hopefully we can capitalize on that, he said.

Berna looks to continue his winning ways

10-time Shawano
champion enters
Outlaws race
By Brady Van Deurzen
sports@wolfrivermedia.com

Late Model driver Ron

Berna has been racing locally since 1986.
He has accumulated 10
championships over his
30-year history at Shawano
Speedway, including seven
championships in the Late
Model division and three
in the IMCA Modified division.
He will compete in his
third World of Outlaws
race on Aug. 2.
The World of Outlaws
race is something different
than what we do on Saturday nights, Berna said.
It is a different race. The
wheels are different, they
stick more. And it is just
exciting to race against
the guys that you watch on
TV.
Bernas previous bat-

Ron Berna has won three championships in a row at Shawano Speedway. He will attempt to add a World of
Outlaws victory to his tally on Aug. 2.

tles with the Outlaws were

not as successful as his

usual Saturday night races. This year, however, the

Abrams native expects a

better result.

We bought an open
motor from Towpower,
Berna said. We are able
to run the motor in our car
with a restrictor plate for
the Shawano races, but in
the World of Outlaws, we
can run without it. That
will give us some extra
power so we can keep up.
Berna, 49, is pursuing
his fourth-straight championship in Shawano, but so
far 2016 has been a weird
year. He ranked sixth in
points, as of July 16.
We have had a lot of
problems this year already, Berna said. We
have had accidents, engine problems, overheating and just car problems
in general.
Berna said the problems have contributed to
lower than expected finishes.
We havent seen as
many top-five finishes
as we would like, Berna
says. We almost always
finished top five last year,
but this year we are seeing

a lot more seven and up

finishes.
Berna said his first
track championship in
1992 was inspired by
his family, who always
helped out.
And after 30 years of
racing, his crew has become like a second family.
My team knows each
other. We know what we
need to do and when we
need to do it, Berna said.
It is a family thing, it is
just what we do, and what
we have done for a long
time.
Berna, who wants to
keep racing as long as
were having fun and as
long as we can afford it,
said that taking home
the gold in the World of
Outlaws race would be a
dream come true.
Winning the World
of Outlaws race would
be pretty special, Berna
said. Ive won a lot of races, but I have never won a
race like this one. It would
just be so special.

Mullen to try his luck at World of Outlaws race

First-time

By Brady Van Deurzen

Late Model and IMCA

Modified driver Mike Mullen has been racing all
over Northeast Wisconsin
for 11 years. Now, Mullen
is focusing his sights Shawano and the World of Outlaws race on Aug. 2.
Mullens racing has
taken him to tracks in
Oshkosh, Pulaski, Cedar
Lake and many others.
He is drawn to the larger
races.
We like to race where
the big events are going to
be, Mullen said. Getting
practice at the track before big events like World

of Outlaws is really important.

Since Mullen has only
raced in Shawano four
times this season, he
ranked 16th in the Shawano Speedway points standings as of July 16. Shawano
will be his number one priority, however, for the next
few weeks.
The next four weeks,
were going to go to Shawano, Mullen said in
early July. Were going so
that we can get used to the
track and so we will be able
to go faster for the World of
Outlaws.
Mullen has owned a
Late Model car for a year
and a half and will be making his debut in the World
of Outlaws.
The Seymour native
gained a passion for racing by watching his father
drive IMCA Modifieds and

Mike Mullen will focus on racing at the Shawano Speedway in preparation for his first World of Outlaws race on Aug. 2.

began to race them himself when he was 17.

After 11 years at the
wheel of IMCA Modified
cars, Berna said the switch
last year to Late Model
cars was exhilarating.
Late Model cars are

faster than Modified cars,

Mullen said. They are
new, and new things are
always much more exciting.
Mullen, who works as
a millwright at The Boldt
Company when he is not

racing, is still learning the

ropes of Late Model racing. He has always been
intrigued by the World of
Outlaws series.
I pretty much followed
them my whole life, Mullen said. The skill level
that some of these racers
have is just crazy. The talent is definitely there, and
I have always wanted to
see how I would do against
them.
Mullen wont be caught
off-guard by the competition. He has raced nationally in three DIRTcar UMP
series races, as well as two
Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt
series races.
Mullen hopes his runs

at Shawano Speedway
this season will give him
a home-field advantage
against the Outlaws.
Learning the track
definitely wouldnt hurt,
Mullen said. I dont really
know if it is going to help
either, but it wont hurt.
Thats for sure.
He admits winning the
race is definitely a long
shot but is up for the challenge.
It is always just fun
to go out and race, especially racing in the World
of Outlaws, Mullen said.
You cant find any higher
competition than the competition at the World of
Outlaws.

Outlaws racers get hot laps prior to time trials

An evening of World of
Outlaws Late Model Series racing generally follows this schedule:
The Shawano Speedway will include IMCA
Modified and IMCA Sport
Mod races as well on Aug.
2.
Drivers Meeting
Prior to each night of racing, all World of Outlaws
drivers attend a mandatory meeting conducted
by the World of Outlaws
competition director and
other series officials.
The meeting outlines the
nights racing events and
any procedural changes
that might be in place.
Hot Laps A practice
session held prior to time
trials that allows drivers
and teams to fine-tune
their cars. Hot laps are
run in groups, with each
driver assigned to their
group by the pill draw
that determined the order for time trials. Each
driver is allotted three
or more laps (depending

on track size) at speed in

order to ensure that their
car is ready for qualifying.
Time Trials Each
competitor is given two
timed laps to determine
where they will start in a
heat race. If a competitor
misses their spot in the
qualifying order which
is determined by a blind
draw when each driver
signs in at the WoO LMS
control trailer by more
than two places, by rule
they are relegated to one
lap at the end of time trials and the best they can
qualify is 50 percent-plusone of the overall number
of qualifiers no matter
what qualifying time of
record they post.
Heat Race (or Heat)
A 10-lap race that determines the drivers
who will move on to the
A-Main or B-Mains. Depending on the number
of heat races needed for
the field of cars on hand,
the top three, four or six

finishers in each preliminary transfer directly to

the A-Main and the remainder of the finishers
move on to the B-Main(s).
The heat races are
aligned straight-up from
the results of time trials
the fast-timer starts from
the pole position in the
first heat, second-fastest
timer starts from the pole
in Heat 2, etc.
A-Main Redraw Depending on the number of
heat races that are run,
six or eight drivers (heat
winners or the top two or
three finishers in the prelims) report to the frontstretch of the racetrack
before the B-Main(s) to
redraw for starting positions in the first three or
four rows of the A-Main.
B-Main This is the
final chance a driver has
to race into the A-Main.
Depending on the number of heat races run, the
top two, three or more
finishers in a B-Main will
transfer into the nights

headline event. B-Main

distances are set at 12
laps. The two highestranked drivers in the
WoO LMS points standings who do not qualify
receive provisional spots
to start at the rear of the
A-Main; track promoters
have the option to add
more provisional starters
at their discretion.
A-Main (or Feature)
The final race of the night
decides who is the overall
winner of the event. WoO
LMS A-Main distances
are normally 40, 50 or
100 laps, and the purses
offered rise correspondingly with the lengths of
the races. Caution-flag
laps do not count, and the
A-Main must finish with
at least two consecutive
laps of green-flag racing.
Points are awarded
for A-Main and B-Main
finishing positions and
to drivers who enter
a program and fail to
qualify. The A-Main winner receives 150 points,

place and then a twopoints-per-position drop
down for as many finishing positions in the event.
The first non-qualifier

in a B-Main receives 90
points with a two-pointsper-position drop after
that. Drivers who do not
start a B-Main receive 60
points.
