ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY
Sydney Fringe Festival would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land that we meet on, and pay respect to the 29 clans
of the Eora Nation. We would also like to acknowledge that this land falls within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal
Land Council. We would like to pay our respect to elders past and present, and all the Aboriginal peoples whichever Aboriginal nation
they may come from.

welcome
KERRI GLASSCOCK FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
2016 has been a challenging year for Independent artists. To be a practicing artist you need to
have staunch resilience, and it is this stoicism that has united our sector in the most exciting
new way this year. Artists are for the first time, in many years voicing their protest, making their
worth heard and banding together in support of each others work, to ensure that we all have a
vibrant and creative City to enjoy.
It is this energy that the Sydney Fringe Festival harnesses each September, and this year more
than ever we will be shouting loud and proud. It is time to celebrate the wonderful cultural
offerings your local artists produce year round, so this year we are putting the sparkle back
into our Citys nightlife. We are reawakening old haunts, reviving long forgotten venues and
activating new precincts. Its time to get your shimmer on and join us as we bring together the
best Independent artists the City has to offer, welcome visiting performers from across the
seas and add a deep coating of glitter to everything we love about Sydney.
Welcome to the 2016 Sydney Fringe. Under the stewardship of artist and theatre
practitioner Kerri Glasscock, the Fringe has developed from providing a consolidated
platform to spotlight and celebrate Sydneys rich but often under the radar creativity, to
also becoming an aspirational and guiding force for artists and their work. I have been
privileged and very gratified to see the Fringe grow in this way and for it to maintain and
cherish its core tenet of support for artists and their art. With the initiation of the Sydney
Fringe, 6 festivals on and the dynamism of Kerri Glasscock, its time to step aside as Chair
of NEPA and the Fringe. I wish to thank Board and all Fringe team members past and
present and my colleagues at Century Venues particularly Elia Eliades who saw the need
and worth of the Fringe and supported it with gusto and heart and to former Chair Mark
Cleary who first championed the idea of an alternative arts festival. Please enjoy this years
banquet of riches and I look forward to seeing many of you in theatres and pop-up Fringe
venues throughout our fair city.

fringeambassadors
This year we have asked some of the countrys leading artists, advocates and performers
to wave the flag of Fringe as our Ambassadors. Each one has been chosen not just for their
incredible skill as artists, but because they use their place and their passion to push the
boundaries and drive change.
A freakishly talented family of performers the Stone Family have graced the stages, screens
and airwaves of Sydney for decades and all three of them have provided unique and standalone voices to the scene, each carving their own way forward to critical acclaim.
ELANA STONE
JAKE STONE
YAEL STONE
Yael Stone has shot to fame in the USA Netflix show Orange Is The New
Black. Sydneysiders will remember her incredibly brave performances
on stage in Diary Of A Madman opposite Geoffery Rush for Company B
and Stoning Mary at Griffin Theatre. She is also co-founder of The
Cannery. Working from a studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the company
supports new writing and innovative, creative exploits.
Independent creation is the life blood of any rich arts and culture
community. Its where most of us get our start. Because there is space
for beginnings and risks. For euphoric discovery and astronomical,
glorious failure.
A vibrant independent scene gives everyone, from the newly minted
creative bunnies to experienced sea dogs a chance to explore, hone
and radiate. We need ways to express ourselves when we feel the urge.
Because a society without room for unapologetic expression has dust
in its veins.
PAGE 8
fringeambassadors
Our next two ambassadors have been at the forefront of advocating for diverse voices and
stories in our art. They have appeared on many of our national stages and on screen in film
and television. Camilla and Nicholas are strong advocates of independent art and use their
passion to inspire change and support for this vital part of our sector.
CAMILLA AH KIN
Legendary Australian actress Camilla Ah Kin has performed in film, television and theatre
for the past twenty years. Including Holding The Man, Jump For Jordan, Small Poppies, Ali
& the Ball, Rake, Stupid Stupid Man and most recently joined the cast of Here Come the
Habibs. A fierce advocate for artists and the Industrial Organiser for MEAA, Camilla fights
the good fight with inspirational grace and understated talent of the kind not often seen.
Its Sydney Fringe Festival time! The moment when Sydney is alive with stunning
possibility and accidental genius. Faces never seen before, one off performance venues
and new cultural precincts previously unimagined! Whether its Edinburgh, New York or
Sydney, city Fringe Festivals are the beating heart of new ways that culture responds.
Nothing in a Fringe Festival is Tried and True and Everything will be made from more
courage than cash. Every little artspace or cabaret event is a big risk. Even the
experienced performers you will see are Known Risk Takers. Some extraordinary artists
will start their careers in the Fringe and you dear audience will be the first to see them.
How will you know if youre watching genius uncover itself? Youll feel it. It will be the
performance or art work that you just cant shake after having experienced it. But you
have to be there. Thats the thing with Art. You have to turn up and take a risk.
The contemporary American theatre director Peter Sellars said once, if you really want
to know whats going on in a city read the graffiti. Maybe the Sydney Fringe Festival is
the cultural Graffitti of Sydney. This festival will challenge, subvert and titillate this city
nothing surer.
The Fringe Festival is as OPEN and as ACCESSIBLE as Arts can be, whether youre a
spectator of Art, a maker of Art, a performer of Art, a consumer of Art, a critic of Art, a
teacher of Art, a shower of Art, an author of Art, a dreamer of Art or a provoker all you
have to do is turn up.
I am a proud ambassador of the Sydney Fringe Festival for 2016.
I am proud to be a part of the Arts community of Australia.

NICHOLAS BROWN
Currently a host of SBS Radios PopDesi, Brown splits his time between LA, India and
Australia working as an actor, singer, writer and composer. In 2004, Brown was a recipient
of The Mike Walsh Fellowship and travelled to India, Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris
and Rome studying multiculturalism in theatre, film and television. As part of the
fellowship, while in London Brown had an internship with the British Indian Theatre
Company Tamasha Theatre where he began honing his writing skills. Brown is passionate
about addressing inequality, specifically the role of multicultural representation in the media.
Im proud to be an ambassador for the Sydney Fringe Festival and cannot stress
enough the importance of Independent Arts. I often wonder if we as Australians really
do have a culture. I for one dont identify at all with the mainstream. Im so often in
situations where Im thinking these are not my people! Fortunately whenever Im in or
watching or engaging with denizens of indie arts, I know that Im around my people. I
hope that in this season you find your people and your stories. Looking for culture?
Youll find it on at the Fringe.
The amazing and beautiful thing about independent theatre is that you can see, feel and
smell the blood, sweat and tears that have been shed to get stories on to the stage. That
passion is rarely seen anywhere else. I remember getting scars from indy plays in the
past, small wounds from stage fighting or set changes, physical rehearsals, or from a
wild unbridled moment in time with another actor. I wear those scars proudly now like
ritualistic tattoos. They are part of me and are symbolic of the life that I lead as a young
artist and will hopefully continue to lead: one filled with passion, risk and storytelling.

ALTERNATE
REALITY GAME
Our mascot for 2016, Bravo Child is moving into the Precinct for
September and creating a program of activations, art-based
experiences and performances at various locations in the new precinct.
As a game designer, Bravos performance style incorporates a
real-time element; drawing on audience participation with real world
consequences. Bravo frames the month-long narrative as an Alternate
Reality Game. The audiences piece the narrative together by collecting
pieces of the puzzle before, during and after the event. In this way the
art bleeds into the world beyond the confines of a traditional theatre
setting and becomes a social experiment. The aim being to apply
creativity and brave innovation to our everyday lives. Bravos signature
whimsy and intellectual frenzy promise to whip visitors into an inspired
state of wonder and play.
Joined by a host of both local and international guests from the arts
for social change group UpUpTrampoline, audiences can expect to
witness an array of creative offerings; from physical theatre, sensory
art and transmedia storytelling to endurance art, experiential dining
and art-walk tours.

CRAVE
Sarah Kanes Crave is that thing that
keeps you up at night. Youve been over
it a million times but you still havent
found that neat box to put it in. Its ugly
and hard and funny and joyful. It is so
frustratingly paradoxical. But that
doesnt mean the narrative isnt beautiful.
METAMORPHOSES
Bursting through 15 books of the finest
Latin poetry known to man with pathos,
irreverence, humour and energy. Two
people cheekily re-enacting every great
myth they can get their hands on? We
like to think its what Ovid would have
wanted and if its not... we frankly dont
care.

THE WOMEN
With a serving of marriage, any woman
might expect an icy side of adultery or
divorce. Inspired by salacious gossip
overheard in powder rooms of swank
1930s nightclubs, THE WOMEN is a
sharp-witted appraisal of Manhattans
elite, proving that, for ladies who lunch,
revenge is a dish best served hot...

Were all about putting art in interesting
spaces so well be running a new Artists
in Residence program at the Urban
Newtown as part of Sydney Fringe 2016.
Well invite four Australian playwrights to
each spend one consecutive night at the
Urban Newtown from 1215 September.
Each night, the playwrights will add to the
play that has been written and left in the
room by the last playwright.
Over the four days they will write a short
play set in a hotel room that will be read
by actors to an invited audience at the end
of the week.
Things are bound to get interesting and we
cant wait to see where the writers take us!

Hitchcocks Birds is an intimate

told through the voices of his beloved

with the man himself.

BLUE WEDNESDAY
In a classic bar room atmosphere we
bring the lights down low and sink into
the classic tunes (perhaps with a classic
cocktail) of Blue Wednesday. The house
band grooving on the tones of the Jazz
and Blues era makes for an easy hang
mid-week vibe.

TIM
RITCHIE
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
From light-tripping abstracts to brutal architectural angles, acute observations
to stunning panoramas, Tim Ritchies photographs of early morning Sydney have
become an unmissable feature of the daily social-media feeds for thousands of
locals. In his first solo exhibition, former Radio National Music Director, Ritchie
presents a collection of signed, one-off original prints displaying the breadth of
his styles along with a series of artist talks for the month of September. One of
the original Double Jay crew, Tim will also be In Conversation, sharing stories of
a now lost-Sydney: a pre-dawn world where memory rather than photos recall
characters spilling out of long-defunct inner-city 80s clubs after his DJ sets. Copresented by Groovescooter & Folonomo Gallery for Sydney Fringe.

FANCY ROMANCE
Bart Freebairn is a great comedian
working all over Australia and parts of
the world. This is a wonderful work in
progress show. Still full of many funny
jokes just a bit rough around the edges.
Vibrant and up and coming as a real
estate agent might up it. a joy to

I must not fear - fear is the mind-killer.
Our world is driven by fear and the
future it leads us down is a bleak one.
But one man sees a better way, free
from the shackles of fear, if only we are
brave enough to walk the Golden Path.

BUILDING A MORE
ACCESSIBLE FESTIVAL
The Sydney Fringe Festival is committed to finding
opportunities to improve accessibility over the coming
years of the fringe festival.
Without action,
sustainability has no
substance
Its not always easy making the right decisions every day, even though there is little debate that looking
after Mother Earth is the most critical thing we all need to take responsibility for without her, there is no
future. The good news is, there are a lot of little things we can do to make a big difference. Here are some
tips on ways we can start living more sustainably by simply reducing our carbon footprint when we travel,
shop, eat, and share.
