back into the boat.
Volunteering To Rescue!
The West Kootenay Search and Rescue training weekend can use your help. The British Columbia Search and
Rescue Association (BCSARA) is made up of passionate
volunteers who give time to provide their extremely important service to everyone who enjoys active recreation.
On Saturday, August 20 the Castlegar Society for Search
and Rescue (CSAR) will host West Kootenay Regional
SAREX 2016, a weekend training event filled with handson workshops open to all of BCs SAR volunteers.
Endless Adventure, of Crescent Valley, would like to
help these heroes, by raising funds and awareness. Chris
and Andrea, who own Endless Adventure, believe they
can alleviate pressure on these volunteers. BCSARA does
receive some funding from the government, which is very
much appreciated. However, dedicated SAR volunteers
are continually using their personal funds to buy necessary equipment and participate in local training. For a
group of people so dedicated to helping it is not fair to
expect them to also pull money out of their own pocket
to help save lives and provide services to the RCMP, BC
ambulance services and the coroners office.

To help raise awareness and funds, Endless Adventure is

hosting an online photo contest and an Endless fundraising campaign.
The photo contest is created to help raise recreation
safety awareness. People are encouraged to take a photo of
them and/or their family being safe while recreating, submit it to the Endless Adventure Facebook page and you

Endless fundraising has three opportunities to raise money
for the West Kootenay regional SAREX 2016 weekend.

had the brilliant idea of clearing
the snow off Shamrock Lake and
having a hockey game there
shoot a few commercials #AnythingForHockey oh so Canadian, lucky for us! When they
finished shooting the commercial
the Heli-skiing outfit that transported the crew up and down
the mountain decided to open
it up to the public 22 skaters
at a time = two teams of 10 plus
a goalie each weather permitting of course. Eric Mathews
(the helicopter pilot) home rink
is Kaslo, where he plays Satur-
day nights with a group of really good guys. Hockey culture

is very strong in this Kaslo rink.
When offered the chance, each
player that could, paid for his
seat the chopper was full in no
time. One of the players, RCMP
corporal Sean Begg from Kaslo,
thought a photo of himself in his
serge on a glacier might make a
great Christmas card and so
with permission from his superiors he packed it along and at
intermission donned it and skated, while his teammates took
photos. From those photos came
the Goalie and the Mountie
coined by CBC.ca as The Most
Canadian Photo, Ever.

Warren was born in Burnaby, BC to Alfred and Lillian Moon (nee

Hume), and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. There he met and married his

Kootenay residents are

banned from using fireworks
on private land, Crown land
and in BC Parks, announced
the BC Wildfire Service.
Many municipalities are also
prohibiting the use of fireworks; ALWAYS check with

Anyone found contravening this ban could be fined up
to $100,000 if convicted. If fireworks are determined to
cause a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to
pay all firefighting and other costs.

On August 15 20, Kaslo hosts the 4th Annual Kaslo

GuitarFest at St. Andrews
Church and the Langham. Kaslo GuitarFest is for classical guitarists of all ages
and stages, led by a cohort of Canadas leading performers
and teachers. In a parallel program offered by Selkirk College, beginners can learn fundamental guitar techniques
and are welcome to observe other Festival classes.
On Thursday, August 18 at 7 p m, in the Langham Theatre, Murray Visscher and Daniel Bolshoy will present
History of the Guitar Part II, as part of the Cafe Langham
series. Guitar music of the early 19th Century will be performed on Visschers collection of period instruments.
Many GuitarFest registrants are students at universities
in Alberta and BC. They will perform in public concerts
on Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon and the
faculty will collaborate in a concert on Friday evening,
August 19. All concerts except Cafe Langham take place at
St. Andrews United Church.

Pokmon Go Not Worth

Risking Your Life For
BCAA urges parents to take vigilant steps to keep kids

safe around roads when playing the popular augmented
reality mobile game, Pokmon Go, after reports of some
serious consequences around the world.
Chasing Pokmon can be fun and exciting but not
worth risking your life for, says Shawn Pettipas, manager,
community impact at BCAA. I cant stress enough how
dangerous it is for kids to play this game on and around
roads, particularly unaccompanied. He advises parents
to use the game as an opportunity to remind their children about the rules of the road and how important it is
to always balance fun with safety.
A Kids Safe Canada study shows that children aged 5
to 14 years are at the greatest risk for pedestrian-related
injuries and fatalities. According to the BC Coroners Service, over 2,400 child pedestrians are seriously injured
and approximately 30 are killed each year in Canada. Distraction can be a big factor, with a University of Alabama
study using a virtual environment revealing that kids distracted by cell phones while crossing the street:
Were one-third more likely to be hit or nearly hit by a car
Took 20% longer to begin crossing the street

Lock eyes. Be alert. Honk if you need to.
Expect the unexpected such as kids darting out from
between parked cars. Always check for pedestrians when
youre backing up, and be aware that kids could be present
on any side of the vehicle.
We realize that kids are going to play this game and we
want them to have fun but we also want them to stay safe.
We all play a role in road safety and this is a good opportunity for parents to discuss safety and lead by example,

Tamara Smith, the societys fundraiser/coordinator for

the Slocan housing project, created the Facebook page,
which can be found at www.facebook/svhousing.
The new logo, with a house complete with chimney
and trees, gives a feeling of security and hominess, said
board member Penny Tees. I love that it reflects our rural
setting and that our purpose and locale are prominent in
the text. The board had a lot of fun honing in on what was
important to include and I think the new logo really hits
the mark.
When the finances are all in place, the housing society plans to build 12 units of affordable rental housing in
the heart of Slocan, adjacent to the Wellness Centre and
Library. Major funding applications are in the works and
the Hike or Bike for Housing will provide a huge impetus
and show community support to all funders.
Two decades ago the society raised funds for the Passmore Lodge project with a very successful Hike for Housing. Some of those same hikers will hike again, along with
many more people of all ages. This falls Hike or Bike for
Housing should be a blast, with celebrations each day
along the rail trail route.

with even newer applications means that Peter has become
an expert problem solver and an innovator in business. He
brings knowledge of the technology sector and Kaslo area
to his role on the board of directors.
Robert and Peter were appointed to the board at CFCKs
Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 20, 2016. They
will serve alongside the following continuing board members: Chris Bell (chair); Frances Swan (vice chair); Charlotte Ferreux; Dan Salekin; Terry Bambrick; Bob Wright.
Community Futures would also like to recognize the
work of Jim Holland, who served on the board for nine
years and resigned at the AGM.

8th Annual Columbia Basin

Culture Tour!
The tour dates are August 13 and 14, from 10 am to 5

pm. This years culture tour will include many returning
favourites as well as a number of exciting new locations
to explore.
Self-directed and free of charge, the culture tour is a
great opportunity to meet people behind the scenes at
galleries and museums, visit studios and venues not
normally open, shop for original art or fine crafts and
experience special events planned only for this weekend.
Before you hit the road, check out the profiles to see the
special events and exhibitions that are happening at each
location!
Here are 10 hints for a great Culture Tour, passed on
from a seasoned Culture Tourist who has been every year.
Start with a full tank of gas some great spots are
off the beaten track!
Take your Backroads of BC or other detailed map.
The CBCT Directory maps are good, but sometimes a bigger picture will be helpful.
Be prepared to get a little lost, or at least think
you are. One way streets and cul-de-sacs can
be hard to find sometimes but dont give up,
that out of the way location might be a treasure!

Bring a friend or family member or two as there

will be lots of activities and events for all ages.
Please leave your dog at home, as it may not be
welcome at some of the venues and it is usually hot
on this weekend.
Take your restaurant and hotel coupon book if you
have one. This is a great chance to visit some new
places to eat and who knows? You might want to
make this an overnight trip!
Take your cheque book, some of the studios are not
set up to take credit or debit cards. Small money for
small purchases will be appreciated.
If you see something you like, buy it! It may not be
there if you wait for next time and many of these
locations are not open regularly. Dont be surprised
if you save the sales taxes, many home based artisans do not have to collect GST and/or PST, so purchasing directly benefits both the customer and the
vendor (they arent paying commission to a commercial outlet either).
Wear comfortable walking shoes, you might be
doing some wandering through gardens and yards
to get to studios.
Sunscreen and a hat arent bad ideas, either. Even a
bottle of water or two, staying hydrated keeps your
energy up.
Plan to spend one day, at least! Events start at 10
am and run to 5 pm, both Saturday and Sunday,
which gives you a chance to explore further afield.
