The Life of Garry Marshall

Garry Marshall was an American director known for


popular films such as Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries,
and Beaches. He was also known for a very popular television
show called Happy Days. As well as directing, he also was an
actor, producer, writer, voice artist, and comedian. He was
born on November 13, 1934 and died on July 19, 2016. When he
died he lived until the age of 81 years old. He was born in
The Bronx, New York City, New York. His family consisted of
his mother Marjorie Marshall, Father Anthony Marshall, and
his two sisters Penny Marshall and Ronny Hallin. He also has
a family of his own with his spouse Barbara Marshall and
children Kathleen Marshall, Scott Marshall, and Lori
Marshall. Marshall attended DeWitt Clinton High School then
graduated from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism.
After graduating from Northwesterns Medill School of
Journalism he went off into the U.S. Army in 1956 and served
in the Korean War. After the army he decided to move to
Hollywood, California. While living in Hollywood he met a
man named Jerry Belson. Belson and Marshall wrote two
sitcoms together. This is where he found his passion for
filmmaking and decided to become a director. Also when
creating his films later on, when he was younger his
mothers wit is what inspired Marshalls comedy in his
films. As the years went by people said that Marshall had
proved himself a filmmaker after the film The Flamingo Kid
in 1984. The film starred Matt Dillon and the box office
made about 23.86 million USD. Garry Marshall also created a
very successful television show called Happy Days. It first
released on January 15, 1974. The show takes place in the
50s and 60s of Milwaukee. This show starred actors such as
Ron Howard, Henry Winkler, and Marion Ross. This show
consisted of 11 seasons and ended in the year 1984.The show
won three Golden Globe awards as well as many more. In all,
Happy Days was one of Marshalls great successes.
Marshalls career was very successful and over his career
he directed over 18 films. Over the years he also received
several awards such as the American Comedy Award for
Lifetime Achievement, the Guild of Americas Valentine
Davies Award, the David Susskind Television Lifetime
Achievement Award, etc. He was also put into the Television

Hall of Fame in 1997. Overall Garry Marshall was a very


successful American director as well as other careers.
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Garry
Marshall was very well known for the films Pretty Woman, The
Princess Diaries, and Beaches. Although many of his films
were successful, none of them compared to his 1990 film
Pretty Woman. The movie was such a success that it was
nominated for an Oscar. The film starred two popular actors
named Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. These actors were so
successful in his movie they
were in another film of
Marshalls called Runaway Bride
that made about $309 million dollars in
the box office. The film's release
was on March 23, 1990. In the box
office the film made about $432
million dollars worldwide. At the
time it was the fourth highest
grossing film in the United States.
This movies storyline includes a
wealthy businessman (Richard
Gere) who needs an escort for
some events, and decides to hire a
prostitute (Julia Roberts) he meets,
which eventually leads to them
falling in love. Since the movie was very successful it won
three awards. Those awards were Golden Globe Best Actress
(Julia Roberts), Kids Choice Award for Favorite Movie
Actress (Julia Roberts), and Peoples Choice Award for
Favorite Comedic Movie. Another very successful film of
Marshalls was the Princess Diaries. This movie was such a
success it came out with a part two. The Princess Diaries
was released on July 29, 2001 in the United States and
worldwide. The film stars the actresses Anne Hathaway and
Julie Andrews. Although it does not compare to Marshalls
film pretty woman it still made about $165.3 million dollars
in the box office. This movies storyline states, character
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) finds out she is next in
line for the throne of small country Genovia. As the year
goes on she tries to understand with the help of her
grandmother (Julie Andrews) and her friends at her high
school. This movie won two popular awards called the ASCAP
Award and the Young Artist Award. When part two of this
movie came out it made about $134.7 million in the box
office. The release date of the movie was August 11, 2004.
It once again starred Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. The

plot of this sequel was after Mia Thermopolis found out she
was next in line for the throne; she decides to move to the
country she would potentially be in charge of, Genovia.
After moving to Genovia she is primed for an arranged
marriage with an English Suitor. Another one of Marshalls
very popular films was Beaches. Beaches was released on
December 21, 1988. In the box office the film made $57
million dollars. The film starred actors such as Bette
Midler, Barbara Hershey, Mayim Bialik, John Heard, James
Read, Spalding Gray, and Lainie Kazan. The storyline
consists of two women who meet as children and remain
friends through decades. One pursues a singing career and
the other becomes a successful lawyer. Throughout the years
they are always there for each other and travel from coast
to coast. In the movie, one of the actresses won the award
for Young Artist. Before Marshalls passing his final film
he directed was called Mothers Day. This film was released
on April 29, 2016 and made about 43.8 million USD. The
movies storyline goes how three generations come together in
the week before Mothers Day. Actors in the movie include
Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Julia Roberts. Another
very popular movie of Marshalls that was a success was
Valentines Day that starred actors such as Julia Roberts,
Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba and many more. The
storyline is that many couples in the city of Los Angeles
break up and make up based on the pressure of expectations
for Valentines Day. This film made about $216.5 million
dollars in the box office (USD). This film won awards
including the ASCAP award, A razzie award (Ashton Kutcher
and Julia Roberts), and three Teen Choice Awards. One more
successful film of Marshalls was New Years Eve. It was
released on December 6, 2011 and made about $142 million
USD. The storyline is it shows the lives of several couples
and single people in New York come together over the course
of New Years Eve.
When getting started in the world of directing, he made
many early films. Some of his early work included the movies
Nothing in common, The Flamingo Kid, and Overboard. Nothing
in common was a comedy-drama film directed by Marshall that
was about a successful man who must juggle his demanding
career while at the same time his parents marriage breaks
apart. The film starred two actors who are Tom Hanks and
Jackie Gleason. The movie was released on July 30, 1986 and
made about 32.3 million USD in the box office. Another early
film he directed was The Flamingo Kid. The movie is where
Garry Marshall really made a statement on his career. This

film set him up for many years of successful films. The


Flamingo Kid starred actor Matt Dillon and made about $23.9
million dollars in the box office (USD). The storyline goes,
a boy named Jeffrey Willis (Matt Dillon) has just finished
high school and is not yet sure
about
his future. His parents want him to
go to
college, but decide to get a job at
the
Flamingo Beach Club where he meets a
successful car dealer named Phil
Brody.
Jeffrey aspires to be a man like
Phil,
but as the movie goes on with
Jeffreys
coming of age, he encounters
romance
and something wrong with
Phils
character. The movie was so
popular that it was nominated
for a Golden Globe award. One
last older movie Marshall
directed was Overboard. The
movie was released on December
16, 1987. In the box office
this film made about $26.7
million dollars. The movie
starred actors Goldie Hawn and
Kurt Russell. The storyline
says, a cruel but beautiful
heiress screws over a hired
carpenter who later on is the first person to find her when
she gets amnesia. Based on what she did to him he decides to
get revenge and convinces her that she is his wife. So, as
well as successful newer films, Marshall also had many
successful older films in the industry.
Garry Marshall was an overall great director. He
directed an extremely popular film that people are still
watching a decade later. Over his lifetime he has created
many popular films people will not forget. Although he has
now passed, his skills will never be forgotten. Actress
Julia Roberts eve says it was an honor to work with him. His
dream of wanting to bring his talents into the industry
definitely worked because people will still talk about his
work years after his death.
