Immanuel Kant

-German philosopher born on April 22, 1724 Knigsberg, East Prussia to a lower-middle-class parents who
were devout pietist
-died on Februrary 12, 1804
-8 years old entered Collegium Fridiricianum, a pietist Latin School
-16 years old entered University of Knigsberg to study theology, natural science and philosophy
-In 1756 he was granted a degree and made a lecturer; 1770 he was appointed as professor
CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE
-Kant argued that the supreme principle of morality is a standard of rationality that he dubbed the Categorical
Imperative (CI)
-Kant characterized the CI as an objective, rationally necessary and unconditional principle that we must
always follow despite any natural desires or inclinations we may have to the contrary
-Kants ethical theory thus rests on the concept of duty
Act in such a way that it is possible for one to will that the maxim of ones action should become a
universal law
