Part 2 Architectural Style

Building 4 is Victorian Italianate style. In
Spot Light On Main Street it states, The
house was built by John Henry Sorg in
1874. (2016) The building has heavy
brackets, arched windows, and decorative
stone that is common for an Italianate style.

Concept Statement for Donahue

The Victorian Italianate Style exterior will be continued on the interior of the
house. This will be done by creating arches in doorways and adding decorative
wood around doors that resembles the decorative stone found on the exterior.
The lines of the arch in the doorways will also create harmony with the clients
taste in style. The color scheme for the home will be split-complementary that
will focus on light greens, blue greens, grays, light blues, and yellow. This will
give the home an inviting and welcoming feeling. The colors will add to the
Art Nouveau the client desires. The feeling of nature will be calming and
peaceful. The main level will be open floor plan allowing the natural light to
bath the room with cheerfulness. The emphasis will be the custom storage that
will display the client's medals.

Split-complementary
Dark green, Light green, blue green, and
purple blue

Justification:
The furniture that I selected for my client is based off of her desire for art nouveau style.
Although some of the pieces might be considered Victorian, I felt that the curves and
design could also be considered as a form of art nouveau. The furniture selection meets
the needs of functionality by providing places of relaxing, scrapbooking, office, and a
place to rest. The fabrics I chose went with the color scheme that is naturalistic. There
are pieces of solids to draw the eyes to the beautiful bold statement fabrics. Most of the
fabrics are from William Morris and Co, he was a designer during the Art and Craft
movement. His paintings and fabrics he designed are nature inspired. All the colors
work together to bring the open floor plan together. It creates a bold and beautiful
statement, but blends in as well. The master bedroom furniture also flows with the other
colors, but also adds a taste of purple that makes all the other colors stand out. The
greens in the bedding brings the harmony to the master bedroom. The fabrics I chose are
durable. The ones I chose for upholstery are a heavier fabric and the curtains and pillows
are a lighter fabric that will bring comfort.

Justification
The lighting fixtures, paint colors, finishes, all add to create a space that is unique
to both the exterior and interior. The lighting fixtures have a lot of curved sections that
really shows the curving of the windows. The color of paint gives a relaxed flow with the
pop of color coming from the furniture, pillows, and rugs. The ceiling designs adds to
the clients taste in Art Nouveau.
The Essential Gray gives a light flow to the room that will not cause stress or
overstimulation. The African Gray gives an excellent accent wall that will draw the eyes
to the costume built furniture/storage. The wallpaper is such a unique and elegant design
that complements the gray, this allows unity in all the space while adding something new.
The flooring is from a company named Green Choice Flooring International. The
reclaimed materials and also sustainable ones. The light fixtures are also on dimmers that
will allow how much energy is used.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using sprinklers in residential applications. Identify if sprinkler systems are
required in new residential construction in your locality. Explain if you feel they should be required in all renovations of
existing residential buildings.
The advantages of having a sprinkler system in the house is that when a fire occurs and reaches a certain degree of heat
they will turn on and put out the fire and help keep the fire from spreading. The disadvantages of sprinklers are
sometimes they can be an eye sore.
Having sprinklers in homes is a great idea, the problem though is the expense. Working at a place that was grandfathered
in, but had to concur to the law this past year, it was a learning process of just how expensive they get. This would be a
major problem for middle income and low income. If there was a way to make it less expensive it would be great for
every place to have one, but if they keep it expensive than no. Home owners from every bracket need to be able to
afford it.
Select a topic from Part I and discuss three reasons why you feel the topic demands code compliance in residential design.
Explain what could happen if code compliance is not met for this topic.
Electrical compliance should be a must in residential design. If wiring is faulty and old, it would be hazard and could cause
the building to burn down. It could also cause shortages and appliances will not receive enough power to maintain a safe
living. Another possibility is finding illegal wiring when individuals take short cuts. If code compliance is not met the
building will not pass inspection. The building will not be a safe place for children or adults. Although electrical can be
expensive having it meet code will be energy cost efficient and save money in the long run.

Study Model Analysis

What elements can be modified to achieve better symmetrical or asymmetrical balance?
I am still figuring out how I want the desk to be pointed. I do not necessarily want the desk facing the
scrapbooking section and it feels boring, so I am considering giving the desk the view of the front windows.
What are pleasing proportions seen in the model?
I love all the windows. I especially like how I changed my mind about French doors, but instead have it
open. I feel that it compliments the exterior of the house.
How does scale play a role in the mass of the furniture arrangement?
I feel like the pieces of furniture I chose still allows for space, room, and openness. It does not feel cluttered
or small.
What are the dominant and subdominant forms seen in the design?
I would say the dominant form is the bench with the dramatic windows and doorway. I would say that the
desk and scrapbooking desk are the subdominant, but still give a beauty to the room. I had considered
making a storage area that connects to the desk, but I loved the idea of floating shelves. You can also add
decorative designs to the shelving to give it an Art Nouveau style.

Justification and Reflection:

To start the project the client was asked questions about what was important, the style the client liked, and how long they saw themselves living at this home. From there
the Exterior of the building was researched. From there a concept statement was written to explain how the exterior and interior would be unified on the inside of the home while
adding in the clients style of Art Nouveau. Colors where researched and chosen. The next step was creating an adjacent matrix as a reference to look back on. Bubble Diagrams
were created to get an understanding of the space being worked with. From there a rough draft was created to find the best arrangements of rooms and furniture. The following
steps where finding furniture, fabrics, paints, flooring, lighting, and accessories that would bring harmony to living spaces. A furniture schedule was created to give client the right
information about items. A finish schedule was also created to give the client understanding of where paint, flooring, etc would be placed. A study model was modeled for greater
details and reference to space. A research of the codes was undertaken to see what changes would need to be made to the remodeled home. A costume cabinetry/ storage was then
designed to add a unique piece to the home. The next step was completing a finished floor plan. This is the floor plan that was agreed upon by the client. From this step a few
quick sketches were made to get a clearer view of colors and furniture in the living areas. A perspective drawing was done of the living room to be added to a preliminary board for
a complete look into the room. The preliminary board shows the furniture, flooring, lighting, paints, fabrics, and accessories that will be going into each room that is being
designed. The next step was bringing all information into one final packet that would be given to client outlining the future of the clients home.
There are three concepts that I learned in this class that I will find especially useful in the future career. The 1st was learning how to make furniture, lighting, paints,
flooring, and accessory specification sheets. This definitely helps having all the information for that item on one page that you can continually go back and check. The second
concept was a study model. Although it was time consuming, it really opened my eyes to see what the room would look like and how much space is in that room. This will
definitely be useful especially when you run into a blockers brain. The third concept and the one I struggled with the most is the perspective drawing. I truly see the value of
having these drawings and I understand the need for me to continue practicing until these drawings become stronger and detailed. I can definitely see a client wanting to have these
drawings and the benefits that come with it. I truly enjoyed what I learned and will incorporate it into my future.
