OPEN HOUSE THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2010 - PLEASE COME!
On Thursday, May 27, Garden Gate will hold its annual Open House from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
This will be an evening of celebration and recognition for the learning and wonderful activities
that have occurred throughout the school year. Our students and teachers have been busy
preparing student displays of their efforts and you are promised an enjoyable and informative
evening. The GLC will be open for all to see the technology we use and our library where
students can relax for a quiet moment of reading. We are proud of the learning that takes place
at Garden Gate. Come celebrate with us!

Since this is an evening where the students, their parents, and the teachers are “looking back” at this year’s accomplishments
and not one of “looking forward” to next year’s class placements, we ask that parents refrain from asking teachers about their
curriculum, etc. All of that important information will be shared in September at our Back to School Night.

LEARNING DAY, FRIDAY MAY 28, 2010 - NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS

The last learning day of the school year will be this Friday, May 28. In the morning, the staff will focus on what we have done
in the area of 21st century learning skills this year and outline our next steps in that area for next year. The rest of the day will
be devoted to grade level and cross-grade level collaboration with some planning for next year.

THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL WEEK OF STAFF APPRECIATION!

¡Estimados Padres, Gracias por todo que usted hace!
¡Nosotros LE apreciamos en tantas maneras! ¡Gracias! 
On behalf of the Garden Gate staff, I would like to thank our PTA and parents for all
of the flowers, gifts, food, and words of appreciation you showered on us last week.
We are deeply touched and appreciative of your efforts and kindness.Special thanks
go to chairpersons Maha Rameshbabu and Megha Shetty.

FUN IN THE SUN! TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 2010: 2:00-3:30 P.M.

Come join us for an afternoon of fun outdoor games. Dunk teachers and the principal. Oh, no! That’s me! Well, it promises
to be a wet afternoon for some of us and a fun one for all of us! Remember, parents must accompany their children. Thank
you!

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL - PLEASE VOTE!

We have two openings on the School Site Council (SSC) for the 2010-2011 school year. The following individuals in our
community have expressed an interest to serve on the Council. Please vote for two and return your ballot back to school by
Friday, June 4th. A vote is necessary. Thank You!

+ Hello Gators!
School is quickly coming to a close and we are preparing to close down for the summer, but at the same time we are
gearing up for next year as well! Please consider the following two lead volunteer positions that are still needing to be
filled for next year. These two programs are in danger of being canceled because no one has volunteered. The
only way they will continue is if someone volunteers.

Welcome Back Lunch for our Teachers

This is an easy and fun way to see the teachers early in the year! You provide drinks and order pizza for the teachers,
set the tables, then tidy up on the Wednesday before school starts. This position takes about 3 hours at the most. You
will be given instructions, so it really is easy and a great way to welcome our teachers back.

Garden Gate PTA Spirit-Wear Chair

This year we have the honor of ordering “California Distinguished School” T-shirts and sweatshirts with our Garden
Gate name for parents and students to wear. Primary responsibilities: Beginning in late July you will get shirt samples
to show the PTA at the August meeting. You will also display samples on the first day of school at the Welcome
Breakfast. There will also be one or two other opportunities early in the school year to take orders and place an order
with the T-Shirt Company. A good candidate will be able to start this effort during the summer, have internet access
and be a generally organized individual. Number of hours: Approximately 25.

FUN-IN-THE-SUN
This is one of our most fun events - coming up on June 1st from 2:00 - 3:30 on the school grounds – and it is
FREE.
We’ll have games, a Splash Down, and popsicles too,
We have 17 teachers, but we still need you!
Please volunteer, come have some fun
We need 8 more parents before we are done!
Summer is close; the school end is near,
Come join the fun that children hold dear,
Laugh and smile, talk to your friends,
The school year’s near over, have fun as it ends.
So bring your daughter, your husband, your son
See you at school for Fun-N-the Sun!

Sorry for my very little bit of poetry, but seriously we need about 8 parents to fill out the staffing of our end-
of school-event. Seventeen teachers are signed up to have fun with our kids but we need parent volunteers as
well! Please contact Merav Talmor to volunteer at merav.talmore@gmail.com I hope to see you there!

2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR FURLOUGH DAYS

In response to the unprecedented reductions in education funding from the state all district employees
have agreed to a temporary work year reduction of five days for the 2010-2011 school year. This
represents $2.5 million in salary savings, which will help minimize the severity of employee layoffs and
lessen the impact of budget cuts on the district’s education programs. This furlough agreement only
applies for next year. As a result, next year’s school calendar will be adjusted with the following
furlough days:

• November 22 and 23, 2010 (the first 2 days of the week of Thanksgiving)
• The last 3 days of school:
o June 8, 9, and 10, 2011 (all schools except Murdock-Portal Elementary School)
o June 15, 16, and 17, 2011 (for Murdock-Portal Elementary School)

After much consideration, both of these blocks of time were selected to minimize the impact on
classroom instruction. Specifically, the district traditionally experiences abnormally high absence rates
during the two days of school held during the week of Thanksgiving.
