On a recent late night bus ride, returning from a trip to Brampton, ON to gawk at
my newest niece(welcome Arya] I decided, upon realizing that the batteries in
my Game Boy Advance SP were dead, to do a little experiment in the availability
of Wi-Fi access points.
Armed with an older-model Pocket PC and an 802.11b CF card and MiniStumbler,
a popular application with Wi-Fi-seekersf AKA "warchalkers" or "wardrivers"].
Even without any booster equipment, I watched as to my surprise, access points
kept popping up on screen. In the half-hour ride, much of which was highway
driving, I captured signals from 39 networks. I even managed to log on to one
briefly at a stoplight to receive email headers beFore we moved on.
Of the 39 access points, only 15 had any kind of security measures in place,
according to Mini5tumbler. Even a few of the business networks we passed weren't secured. From the perspective of someone who just wants to get connected to check email or see who's online on a favourite messaging
program, unsecured networks are great but the simple fact of the matter is that not everyone's intentions are
innocent. An unsecured network is an open door to those who may want to gain access for nefadious purposes.
Wireless network owners interested in sharing their network as an act of good will should look in to the few
freeware programs available to monitor those connecting from outside. Unwitting sharers should lock down
their network, only allowing those with the correct encryption key to connect.
Many security measures are turned off by default in wireless routers to aid the setup process. Enabling WEP
(wired equivalent privacy] is usually a simple matter of clicking a check box and punching in an alphanumeric
encryption key.
WEP is not perfect [as was demonstrated by a research group at the University of California at Berkley) but is
at least a good start for home networks.

Apple [www.apple.ca] has updated its flat-panel lineup with three
new models, including a 30-inch display, which it says is the largest
high-resolution LCDavailable. The 30-inch Apple Cinema HDhas a
2,560x1,600-pixel resolution and a wide range of built-in connectivity options: two FireWire and two USB
2.0 ports and DVI interface.
New 20-inch and 23-inch models were also introduced. All three
have a 16:10 aspect ratio and sport a new look, with a thin aluminum bezel and curved base, similar to the design of the latest
PowerMac GS
models. The 20-inch and 23-inch displays are available for a suggested retail price of $1,799 and $2,799, respectively.
The 30-inch display will be available in August for $4, 699.
With his talent for revamping the mundane from citrus juicers to
toothbrushes it was only a matter of time before interior and
industrial design star Philippe Starck turned his eye to the desktop.
The result is a sleek new mouse for Microsoft (www.microsft.ca).
The Starck-designed optical mouse has a silver finish, with the two
buttons extending the length of the mouse, divided by a lighted
stripe [choice of orange or blue) with a scroll wheel at the tip. The
mouse body is symmetrical, so can be used in either hand. The
Optical Mouse by Starck will be available at the end of August for an
estimated retail price of $54.95.

For. ages 4-8
Estimated retail price: $119 [LeapPad]; $35-$40 [cartddges]
Df the many digital gadgets devised to entertain children, LeapFrog's
LeapPad has been popular with parents for its educational edge. It's a
sort-of tray into which coil. bound LeapPad books are placed and read
aloud from start to finish or at the user's pace by interacting with the
tethered stylus a great interactive toy for use at home.
But what if you' re planning a road trip or vacation that involves time
spent on planes or in airports? Enter Leapster, Leap Frogs travel-friendly
gamepad. With its batwing shape, it looks like an oversized N-Gage. It has
a 2.8-inch, touch-sensitive, colour LCD,tethered stylus, speaker, volume
controls, navigation rocker and control buttons, earphone jack[handy for
travel], and cartridge slot. Instead of books, users insert cartridges and
interact with the on-screen animation. Depending on the cartridge, the
content can include educational games, e-books, digital art projects, and
interactive videos.
Dur product testers were Giuliana, G, and Cristina, 4, who tried two cartridges: the six-game title that ships with the Leapster and Dora the
Explorer, which is available separately. Both girls are familiar with computers and the LeapPad, so were able to turn the Leapster on and start
playing immediately. They interacted with it in different ways Giuliana
was quiet and very focused, while Cristina talked along with the games
and gave updates on her progress but both were very eager to play,
even after testing the Leapster for a month.

Giuliana's only complaints were that the screen was not viewable outdoors and that the Home and Hint buttons were side by side and it was
easy to hit the wrong one by mistake.
The Leapster runs on four AAbatteries (which, cleverly, can only be
accessed with a screwdriver), so run-time depends on the quality ofbatteries used. Judging by the enthusiastic phy of our product testers,
investing in rechargeable batteries would be wise.
At $35 to $40 each, the cartridges are pricier than the LeapPad books,
but they do pack in a variety of games that lend themselves to replaying.
In addition to the cartridges tested, Leapster titles include SpongeBob
SquarePants, Mr. Pencil's Learn to Draw and Write, The Letter Factory, as
well as Phonics 1, Grade 1, and Kindergarten.

Summer is upon us; the perfect time to bundle everyone inta the car for a road trip.
In a trip revolving around technology, power and planning are the order of the day. Thus it is that every
power bar and extension cord I can lay hands on was
put to use the day before departure.
The planning element is more of a sticking point; we
have still yet to decide where this road trip is going to
take us. The original idea was to head out t o

everyone in the city and any passers-through can log an at just about

some dead zones. Still, it sounds like a geek nirvana.
Mileage restrictions on the borrowed MINI Cooper kyboshed that trip
idea; from Toronto, ON to Fredericton, NB is 1262.8 km taking the
shortest possible route, according to MicrosoFt Streets g Trips.
The problem with planning a trip that puts so much Focus on technology as navigator, as a remote connection to the off'ice and as an enroute travel planner is that how the technology will be used on the
road isn'( completely clear until you' re actually on the road, using it.
The morning of our departure, Kingston, ON was decided upon as
our destination.

It also seems to command a lot oF attention on rhe road. I received the

Large flat-panel screens check in at a smaller price
If you' re the type of person who likes to see what's new at the local electronics store, chances are you' ve stood in the
aisle, staring goggle-eyed next to the large-screen flat. panel televisions, Of course, the price tag always breaks the
spell ... for something so thin, why is the price tag so thick2
Until recently, part of the reason is that the technology was still too new to have really come down to a consumer-level
pdce point, but that looks like that's at least starting to change. Syntax Groups has recently announced its new Olevia
line of LCDtelevisions. The Olevia screens are available in 20-inch, 22-inch and 30-inch sizes, but the prices are much
lower than you'd expect for screens at those sizes.
I recently got the chance to take a look at the 30-inch Olevia screen, which checks in at an astounding $2,595; by comparision, other 30-inch LCD
displays typically retail for about twice that. The big difference is that the Olevia sports a
more modest resolution than some screens with premium pricing: while it's a widescreen display, the resolution tops
out at 1280 x 720 pixels. That's more than good enough to handle standard television or DVDs, but not quite enough to
display HDTV
signals at full 1080i resolution. [It can display HDTVsignals, but it downsamples them to fit the screen. ]

TrackMania is a refreshingly unique computer game that lets players design, build and drive on customized race tracks. Consider it Lego meets Hot Wheels.
That is, while the game ships with more than 50 pre-made courses ranging from snowy alpine
environments to a barren desert to a picturesque countryside the real fun in TrackMania is playing
around with the intuitive track editor, which features more than 2000 individual pieces.
Garners can also drag and drop "stunt" sections onto the track, such as loops, jumps, corkscrews and
sharp hairpin turns. Once completed, these creations can be raced on against virtual drivers or against
human ones via the interne.
An optional "puzzle mode" challenges drivers to complete specific goals. If successful, the game
unlocks new construction pieces that can be used in the track editor. For instance, players must reach
the finish line by driving through all the checkpoints and avoiding numerous road blocks. There are
many mini-challenges to indulge in; some more entertaining than others.
TrackMania's official Web site [www.trackmaniagame.corn) houses more than 2000 user-created
courses to download for free, along with assorted custom-built modifications(mods) and replay
movies. You can attribute much of this extra content to European players, as the game has been available across the pond since the beginning of the year. The North American version features more than
60 bonusconstruction pieces and new game modes.
The racing can get a little rocky, however, as the artificial intelligence is spotty[evidently, computercontrolled cars don't always know how to drive), plus the vehicle handling isn't nearly as responsive
as other arcade driving games such as Need for Speed series. Because of these shortcomings, creating the crazy circuits can be more fun than racing on them.
Overall, TrackMania is both a unique diversion that's part virtual construction set, part racing game.
Adventure game fans who find the latest point-and.click titles haven't evolved much since the days
of Myst should pick up Missing: Since January, an unconventional PCgamethat blurs the line between
fact and Action.
At the start of this distinctive adventure, the player learns that photojournalist Jack Lorski has dis.
appeared along with his female companion, Karen, while researching a string of serial killings. The only
clue is some video footage obtained by Lorski's employer, SKL Network, which triggers a cat.andmouse game with a mysterious murderer known as ThePhoenix,
As an investigator, the company hands you the CD-ROM
sent by the killer in the hopes you can help
solve the case. Further clues must be gathered by cracking word puzzles, analyzing video clips, scouring through more than 300 real and fictitious Web sites and by following instructions from email messages sent by virtual characters, including The Phoenix himself.
This is what makes Missing so compelling the game is played on the CD-ROM,
online and in your email
inbox.
As an example, someone by the name of Kristin Lark will email you early on in the game, who writes:
"SKLNetworkoffered me thechance ofbeing yourpartneronthe Jack Lorskicase.Theguywho made
the CD is just so wacko! He's also got a thing for the esoteric. That's handy because that's what I'm
majoring in! Check out my site, www.salemwitchmystery,corn and you' ll see what I mean."
These virtual characters won't write back if you attempt to email them, but the illusion of help "outside" the game is an effective one. The assorted clues, such as those found on Kristin's Web site, will
help solve The Phoenix's increasingly tough riddles, shed light on the motives behind his killing
sprees, and will eventually help locate the kidnapped couple.
Missing: Since January makes for an eerily fascinating and unique game concept that is well worth
the relatively inexpensive price tag,

Flash-based audio players an affordable alternative
The iPod and its hard drive-based ilk may top most gadget geeks' wish
lists, but their high capacity comes at a high price and there are music
fansoutthere wh o don'tsee the needto carry every songthey've ever
heard wherever they wander. For those of more modest means or
needs, flash memory-based players can be an affordable alternative.
They are also skip-proof and very compact, making them a practical
solution for runners, gym goers, or those who you really need to travel
light.
Recently, we looked at a variety of compact MP3 players. AII were
Windows and Maccomp
atible, but the software extrasthat came with
several of the players could only be launched on a Windows PC.

Not as pretty, but far more versatile, the EVR-500 adds features like
audio recording [in MP3 format), an FM tuner, and a line-in jack [see "No
PC?" pg. T016). The player has a monochrome LCO
that displays text for
navigating the player's various features, and showing the title of songs
in MP3 mode. Like the EMP-2II, it comes with a neck strap that also carries the earphone cable. In this case, though, it is not adjustable. It runs
on a single AAA
battery.
A feature unique to this model is a slide-out USBconnector, which means
it can plug directly into a PC'sUSBport or hub without requiring a cable.

You likely bought your portable MP3 playerto listen to music, but
the same device can be used to listen to audio books on the go.
U.S.-based Audible (www.audible.comi is the literary equivalent of
music download sites like Puretracks.corn and iTunes. Unlike iTunes
however, it is not limited to U.S. customers. Canadians can use th
service to download digital audio books to their PC then transfer
them to an MP3 player.
In addition to books, Audible distributes8 wide range of what it calls
spokenaudio content which includes magazines,newspapers,a
io programs, almost all of which are American. The vanety of
ENoks, however, has a more international flavour and includes race
iaorks by Canadian writers like Douglas Coupland, Yann Martel, and
Margaret Atwood. It also has representation from best-selling
authors like John Grisham and Stephen King.
Books can be purchased individually for about $26.50' to $42 eac
for newer, unabridged titles (about the retail price of audio CDs of
thesame titles),ores partofa monthly subscription.M onthly fee
are $19.75" for one book and a one-month audio periodical or radio
program;or$26.50' fortwo audio books each month.
The site supports both Mac and Windows operating systems.

on the family cordless phone.
There goes your radio spectrum. Chances are the swirl of electronic activity will play havoc with your wireless Internet connection. Cordless
phones and microwaves do to the radio spectrum what loud children do to your concentration. They are disruptive. Radio frequency
IRFI interference is the bane of the technology lover's existence and it's going to get
worse as wireless technologies further per4

"Oh yeah, we think the home is already
crowded especially in the 2.4 GHz space,"

If you home is large, boost your Wi-Fi range by buying a HomePlug powerline adapter. This plugs into a Wi-Fi router and pushes the network signal
through home electrical wiring. HomePlug Wi-Fi adapters can be plugged
into any power socket to push a strong signal back into the air in any
room in the house. Powerline adapters are made by Siemens, D-Link,
Netgear, Belkin, and other network gear companies.
Ultimately, wireless interference can be solved or at least minimized with
basic comlnon sense and a little planning. And heck, you can always
bypass the microwave and heat your burritos in the oven.

Two takes on loIIF cost OVD authorinII
When it comes to tech in the 21st century, there have been
some spectacular disappointments [H
ello! I'm still waiting for
my personal rocket pack) but there have also been some highlights.
Take a look at DVD burning and authoring software. Just four
yearsago, packages under $15D gave you limited menu-creation tools, some basic multiple-choice options, and that was
about it. Zip ahead to now: I' velooked at two low-cost programs
[and there are more out there to choose from), and while
they' re still a far cry from feature-rich authoring packages,
they jive a fair amount of bang for your buck with some
a
caveats.
Skimming over the literature for CyberLink's PowerProducer 2
Gold and Ulead's DVDDisc Creator 3 MovieFactory, what really
caught my eye was that both feature options for re-editing
DVDs.Both supportDVD-VR and DVD+VR, which allow you to
add new video or edit chapters ona rewritable disc without
having to start from scratch. I like the idea, but it's a bit limiting. First and foremost is the fact that many
standalone DVDplayers don't support either VR format, and neither do many common software DVDplayers;
in fact, I couldn't play the VR
discs I burned on anything I own, despite the fact that they are otherwise happy
to playat least one rewritable format. I expect that over time the situation will change, but right now it's a
problem.
That leaves another option, which is time-consuming but more reliable. Both programs naturally allow you
to pull in video from a capture device or a video file, but they can also read files from an unencrypted DVD
(that is, just about every non-commercial DVD]. That means throwing out your old disc if it's not rewritable,

easy to use and fairly straightforward. But they both still need
some work.
For example, CyberLink made a curious decision; while
PowerProducer's timecode indicator lets you know where you are in
a clip, you can't go straight to a spot in the production by entering
the timecode; if you wanted to go to the five-minute mark in a clip,
you'd have to fiddle with the mouse. In MovieFactory, the handy
measurement gauge that indicates how much space a project needs
is often inaccurate, In one case, no matter how I adjusted theset'd
tings MovieFactory insisted that my footage couldn't fit on a DVDdespite the fact that all the footage came from an existing disc,
Two steps forward, one step back. While there are still bugs to work
out, the bar is definitely being raised for the low end of
DVD authoring.

While today's DVDplayers enjoy tremendous popularity nowestimated to be in more than SP per cent
of U.S. homes, Canadian data is not immediately
available
the technology has its share of technical
limitations as we enter the HDTVage.
Namely, today's DVO recorders which are also
growing in market share as prices continue to dropcannot be used to record high-definition television
programming because there is not enough space on
the disc to do so. Nor can any of today's OVD player/recorders display movies in high-definition.
The next generation of products are only 12 to iB
months away, but not unlike the home video format
wars in the '20's between betamax and VHS,
a battle
is brewing between two competing, incompatible
formats that both offer large-capacity digital videorecording.
In one comer there's "Blu-ray," supported by an official consortium of manufacturers including Sony,
Matsushita, LG, Philips, Samsung, JVC, Pioneer,
Sharp, Hitachi and Thompson Multimedia. Its rival is
"HD-DVD," another blue-laser solution lobbied by
Toshibaand NEC,with backing by the DVD Forum

'slim drives' which is very important for both players and PCs," she adds.
Sally says HD-DVDplayer/recorders will also use the same 'bare disc'
structure as current OVOs and CDs[therefore no cartridge is needed).
And asa foreseeable cost advantage to manufacturers, these machines
can be created by the same disc manufacturing plants and equipment
used today.
Boost bg PC manufacturers
But the Blu-ray Consortium got a major boost
last month when Dell and HP
two of the world' s
largest personal computer makers said they
would support the format and join the group.

between the living room and home office, between media and data,"
sags Maureen Weber, General Manager for HP's optical storage solutions
business.
Weber sags Blu-ray discs will eventually hold 100 Gigabytes of information (dual lager, dual-sided), which allows creative software vendors
"to integrate ideas we haven't even thought about get."
But she acknowledges consumers will not want to abandon their existing DVD collection. "HP believes that for Blu.ray to be successful it will
need to be backwards compatible with the current DVDs."
Todatj's options
Panasonic, a supporter of Blu-rag technology, believes today's red laser
DVD recorderswill continueto grow in popularity long before we see the
first Blu-rag or HD-DVDproduct on store shelves in the U.S..
According to Reid Sullivan, VP of the Entertainment Group at Panasonic,
recordable red laser DVD products in the U.S. sold roughly 550,000
piecesin 2003,up from 175,000 pieces in 2002.The estimatesfor2004
hover around 2.5 million units, and then up to 5,5 million units in 2005.
Panasonic makes approximatelg half of all recordable DVD products
sold today, ranging from $450 to $1200. Prices vary on the machine's
features, such as an integrated hard drive recorder, a.k.a. Personal Video
Recorder (PVR).
"But in the future, we' re excited about Blu-Rag and the industry support
rallying behind it and it's a coup to have Dell and HP onboard now, too"
says Sullivan.
Philips, one of the first companies to introduce DVD
recorders in North
America in 2001, also expects highgrowthfor the red laser recordable
market in the next few years.
The compang is expected to introduce dual-lager recording within the
DVD+RW
format bg the second half of 2004, allowing up to B.5 Gigabgtes
of information. In June, Philips will launch a DVD+RW/PVRcombo unit
based on a 120 Gigabgte hard drive for television recording.
Back to tape?
JYC's "D-VHS"technologg is another albeit lesser-known HDsolution
available todag. It's a VHS-like machine that takes special tapes capable
of recording 50 Gigabytes of HD content.
"Until verg recently, 0-VHShas been the only technologg that allowed a
consumer to record a high definition program in high definition," says
Terrg Shea, GM
of Corporate Communications for JVCAmerica. "For home
theater enthusiasts, movie buffs and others who embraced HDTVearly,
0-VHS has been their onlg option if they wantto recordin HD."
Shea points out that PVRs do not allow for long-term archiving of HD
programming since it must be stored on the unit's hard drive.
What's more, D-VHS remains the only way to watch prerecorded
Hollywood movies in high-definition, Five studios currently offer titlesin
the "D-Theater" format D-VHSwith special encrgption to prevent unauthorized copging. Rlms such as Terminator? and U-571 are examples of
what's available todag.
But Pidgeon isn't sold on the technology: "Consumers don't want this,
nobodywants to goback to tape."

Diminutive DV
Digital video cameras are becoming more popular thanks to competitive
pricing and the ease with which the video can be edited on a home corn.
puter. Some of the latest models have been made even more appealing
because of their compact design.
Samsung's new Digital-cern SC-D303 is one of these, with a form that' s
only slightly larger than many digital still cameras, despite the fact that it
houses a Mini DVcassette and comes with a ton of Features.
Those include an incredible 20x optical zoom lens. The camera claims up
to 900x with digital zoom, but even at 20x, the picture can get pretty
unstable if your hands shake. Factor in the digital distortion, and the digital zoom becomes a pretty much meaningless number.
The camera controls are well laid out, with the most often-used buttons
within easy reach of the hand holding the camera. One small issue, however, is the closeness of the record button to the battery, which sticks out
the back of the camera.
The SC-D303 has many of the other features you'd expect in a digital video
camera; image stabilization, night shooting mode, slow shutter mode, and
the ability to capture still images. The still image resolution is only
640x480 pixels, which is great For capturing very basic images but certainly won't replace even a basic digital still camera. The camera has a slot
for MemoryStick media(but does not come with a card] for saving still
photos or recording MPEG-4video at 320x240 pixels.
One nice feature for beginning videograSamsung Digital-cam SC-D303 phers is the Easy 0 button, which puts the

camera into auto mode no configuring,

just presspoint and shoot.
Transferring video can be done by connecting a PC by cable to the camera's Fire Wire[also called IEEE1394 or i Link) or USB
ports, or transferring
the MemoryStick card from the camera to a PC.
The camera also has an A/V
connector for hooking it up to external screen, and an S-Video connector
beneath the large LCD
viewfinder,
Overall, the SC-D303 is a nice compact DV camera. And, at a suggested
retail price of SS99 it's very affordable too.

awaII from the base station with no noticeable loss in quality. But
everII once in a while there was a slight video "stutter" in the signal,
but it didn't detract from the overall experience much. Perhaps if
Sharp went with the faster 802.11g technologII[54mbps) instead of
the 802.11b standard(11 mbpsI, there wouldn't be anti hiccups in
the reception.
Time will tell if earl(I adopters will spend $2500 on a small 1S-inch
monitor, but there's one thing for certain it's quite a looker. More
info is at sharp.ca.

Gaming to Qo:
PC manufacturers target mobile players
Computer garners
tethered to their desk can now cut the cord anumber of PC manufacturers are creating laptops specifically designed For mobile players.
Thesenotebook computers from both "boutique"companies, including Agenware and Voodoo PC,and
brand-name manufacturers, such as Dell and HP
are billed as "desktop replacements" with fast processors and sophisticated video cards to render a game's high-resolution graphics.
Other common features found in these systems include high-end speakers, large displays and multiple
options for online connectivity.
"There is a high demand for a mobile gaming solution, especially for those who like to attend multiplayer
LAN [local area network] parties" says Nelson Gonzalez, CEO
of Aiienware. LAN gatherings are typically
"B.YO.C." (bring your own computer) events, whereby attendees connect their machines to one another
for head-to-head gaminagnd tournaments.
"Lugging around a 50.pound computer and 50-pound monitor isn't the most conducive way to show up
ata LAN event"adds Gonzalez.
While some PC
manufacturers have offered game-oriented desktop computers for a couple of years, the
Miami, Fla.-based company says it was the
first to cater "souped-up" iaptops for g
arners in
March 2003.
Today, these laptops, including the company's latest-the Area-51m Extreme[see below]
account for dose to 30 per cent of the company's annual sales of approximately $15O rniilion.
Gonzalez says many of its customers also
want a game machine for traveling on planes
and for game-play in hotel rooms.

Every time you turn around these days, it seems someone is slinging the
word "wireless" at you like it's supposed to mean something.
Since the word has several meanings, following is a quick guide to the
various worlds of wireless:
GPRS
Cellular wireless
When you hear the word "wireless" on its own, it's is probably being used
to refer to cellular phone technology especially the ability of these new
devices to send and receive data(email, text messages, and even Web
surfing] in addition to making voice calls.
It doesn't matter whether you' re using an actual cell phone or a cellular
modem, because both can send and receive data. Trying to view data
(Web pages or longer email messages] can be less than ideal on a tiny
telephone screen, though.
Most Canadian cellular networks have been upgraded recently to "high
speed," which means they can move more data faster. But high-speed, in
this case, realistically means about SG kilobits per second, roughly the
same speed as the fastest dial-up connections using a telephone. There' s
talk of broadband connections over cellular, but it's not here quiteyet.
There are two major types of high-speed cellular wireless in North
America:

create several distinct images even with one filter. If you are really into
this type of photo manipulation, you might want to move out oF a general
image editor and into a specialized one. Arguably the most robust of these
is Corel Painter B.
Corel acquired Painter from a company called Metacreations in 2000. That
company, when itwas known as Meta Tools, also developed Kai's Power
Goo, a tool that can be credited [or blamed) for the surge in computer-generated caricatures of humans and animals. Power Gooended up as part of
a low-end package called Photo Factory, but the effects revolution it started lives on as special distortion filters in most image editors.
For example, Photoshop has a tool called Liquify and Paint Shop Pro has a
Warp brush (used to alter the horse's eye). Both allow you to distort a
photo by tugging, stretching and smearing portions of it using your cursor.
So, if you want to make logical Aunt Millie look like she has Vulcan ears or
give Uncle Bill "who's always exaggerating" a Pinocchio nose, the tools to
do so are at your command.
The last type of filter I want to briefly touch on doesn't alter the main
image, but allows you to frame it with a mat or border, or finish it with a
rough edge that makes it look as though the print were made using a traditional method of brushing the photosensitive emulsion onto paper. Most
image editors now include a small selection of these kinds of frame
effects. If you want more, check out a company called Autofx[www.autofx.corn), which makes plug-ins that work with many image editors.

Spider-Man 2avoids the pratfalls ofvideogames as another avenue for movie merchandising.Treyarch, the developer. does an excellent job of putting garners right into the
action. First and foremost, a new style of swinging offers
playersthe chance to control just about every move
Spider-Nan has at his command while web-slinging around
town. That said. the intuitive control scheme makes it simple to pull off Spidey's moves.
Spider-Man's full abilities are unlocked as garnersprogress;both swing speed and swing variations, fighting moves and aerial acrobatics grow with garners familiarity.
While swinging around the beautifully designed metropolis, sound and visual effects like
rushing wind and motion blur reinforce the sense of speed and up the immersion factor to
near dangerous levels.
The story is divided into chapters with generally simple objectives like making it
across town in time to meet Nary Jane,Dr.Oc tavi
us,a professor etc.or racking up
"hero points"by stopping car-jackers in their tracks, intervening in armoured car
robberiesor recovering a snatched purse. Hero points activities are repetitive and
garners will quicklytire of helping out their fellow citizens. Thankfully, these interludes are brief and the objectives fairly simple to accomplish.
With plenty of ground to explore and challenges to undertake once the main quest
is finished like various secret tokens hidden around rhe huge city for Spidey to find

and web-slinging races against the clock, Spider-Nan 2 delivers plenty of play time.
Spider-Nan 2 stands on its own merits big budget movie backing or not.
