Organic Agriculture

By Colin McPhillips

Claim
We as a society should
embrace organic
agriculture because it is a
force for good

Reason 1
Organic Ag benefits
farmers economically and
in their health

Benefits to Farmers

Organic farmers exposed to less

carcinogenic pesticides - less likely to
develop cancer

Illegal to save seeds in conventional

farming - most seeds are genetically
modified and patented by Monsanto,
farmers must buy each year

Organic farmers allowed to save seeds

from previous harvests and plant next
year, cutting costs

Reason 2
Organic food is more
nutritious than
conventional

Increased Nutrition
Studies show organic produce contains:

More antioxidants

More vitamin C

More fiber

More phenols - support cardiovascular

health

Reason 3
Organic Agriculture is
better for soil and the
environment

Benefits to Environment

Farming inherently depletes soil b/c plants

absorb nutrients from it - organic farming is all
about building soil

Organic practices of composting & green

manure replenish nutrients in soil and feed soil
bacteria, which fix nitrogen for plant use

Creates healthy, active, diverse soil naturally

resistant to weeds & pests - add in manual
weeding = less chemicals used

Less chemicals = less runoff, drinking water

contamination, aquatic/animal life poisoning,
air pollution

Conclusion

Organic agriculture is beneficial to our world.
