Message From President Dayton

Consistency Thou Art a Jewel

One of the great challenges in the day to day activities of a full-time missionary is
to perform at a high level all of the time. As I review the numbers of key indicators of
each companionship each week, it is interesting that some companionships have
bursts of high levels of accomplishment followed by periods of subpar performance;
others have sustained periods of accomplishment followed by sustained periods of
below average work; and then I see those companionships that seem to have high
levels of accomplishments all of the time, regardless of area, companion, or time of
season. Obviously the pattern we all would like to emulate is the pattern of high
accomplishment ALL of the time. William Shakespeare made the statement,
Consistency Thou Art a Jewel. I believe he was right. When we reach the point in
our missions that we can constantly, consistently do the work we were sent to do at a
high level, we have become what our Father in Heaven wants us to be. Some fiercely
independent souls may say that the emphasis on consistency robs them of their
creativity and free spirit. Serving as an emissary of the Savior and turning our lives over
to Him is probably not a good time to be a free spirit and seek self-expression. Elder
Holland said it best when he said, Weve been doing this a long time and we know
what works and what doesnt work. Allowing each missionary to make his/her own
schedule with wide variations of time arising in the morning, retiring at night, the
number of hours worked, activities completed, would be a recipe for utter chaos.
More importantly, little missionary work would get done!
As a missionary learns to adjust to the mission schedule and adhere to it and
become a consecrated missionary, a wonderful efficiency develops where the
missionary gets up the same time every day, retires the same time every night, leaves
piso exactly at 11:00 AM, uses only 2 hours for medioda (and doesnt leave after 5:00
PM), returns at 10:00 PM unless in a lesson, and plans for and uses his/her time wisely-miracles happen. Obedience brings blessingsexact obedience brings miracles!
Such a missionary has the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost because of his

obedience, he/she develop an Ammon-like boldness and confidence and he testifies

with power and authority. They are all tied together, arent they! Elder David R Bednar
has said, ..our consistency in doing seemingly small things can lead to significant
spiritual results. D&C 64:33 states, And out of small things proceedeth that which is
great. Every commandment kept, every mission law obeyed, every day filled with wellplanned productive activity, every impression of the Spirit followed adds another pillar of
support to the foundation of our character and our goal of becoming more Christ-like.
Finally, Elder A. Todd Christofferson has summarized, In reality, there arent many things
in a day that are totally without significance. Even the mundane and repetitious can
be tiny but significant building blocks that in time establish the discipline and character
needed to realize our dreams and plans.

I pay tribute to and honor the great missionaries in El Faro who are consecrated and
consistent in their missionary labor hour after hour, day after day, week after week, and
month after month. I know that we are blessed with a very high per cent that fall into
that category and because of that very consistency, El Faro gleams and shines bright
like an exquisite sapphire, ruby or diamondjewels all of them. May we all strive to be
consistent and thus become the outstanding missionaries the Lord wants us to be.

Message From Hermana Dayton

Contentment vs. Covetousness

Tolerance is looking beyond the wrong ideas and behaviors of others and
seeing the needs and struggles they have in their lives. It is realizing that
people are at varying levels of maturity and character development. A
person who is tolerant is one who is concerned about showing love to others
and peacefully sharing truths without contention. Tolerance is motivated by
remembering how patient our Heavenly Father has been with us in our
failures.
Something I have noticed in life is that very often a person sees a
weakness in another person and they themselves struggle with that same
weakness. If we see a weakness in another person, it would be wise for us
to ask ourselves if we are also weak in that regard and then to be willing to
correct any deficiency in that area so we can be an example to the person
who is struggling.
If we lovingly decide to be an example and show forth love we can more
clearly help the person who is weak. The Savior over and over again
demonstrated that we always love the person but we do not love the
poor behavior or sinful act.
Tolerance is definitely not changing God's standards. We live in a time of
exaggerated political correctness. We need not change our standards in
fear of offending others. As we live the standards set by the Lord, others
see our happiness and very often want to follow us because of the truth
that we have. President Russell M. Nelson gave us wise counsel when he
said, "Opportunities to listen to those of diverse religious or political
persuasion can promote tolerance and learning."

The Book of Mormon speaks of a time when, "the people of the church began
to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes and...began to be scornful, one towards
another, and began to persecute those that did not believe according to their
own will and pleasure." Alma 4:8 Ammon teaches us that "God looketh down
upon all the children of men; and he knows all the thoughts and intents of the
heart." Alma 18:32. The Lord wants us to not judge but to live peaceably one with
another.
We can apply tolerance to missionary work by:
--Looking beyond appearances of people we meet in the streets
--Accepting people for who they are and viewing them as children of God
--Viewing each person as an individual rather than as a member of a race,
culture or group
--Not confusing what is right with what is popular in society at any given moment
--Looking for the good in our companions--focusing on their strengths instead of
their weaknesses
--Asking ourselves, when we see a weakness in another, if we are also weak in
that area...then change for the better
--Looking for common ground with people of different view points and behavior
We are grateful to each of you wonderful missionaries as we watch you being
tolerant and spiritually mature with those around you. You are shining examples
of all that is good. We hope that you will continue to find the joy in seeing all
people as children of our loving father in Heaven.
We love you!!!

A Message from the Ayudantes

Elderes y Hermanas,
The time has come. Are you pumped?! Transfers are here, and
El Faro looks forward to some incredible weeks. As you may have
picked up on, there have been many changes made! In saying
goodbye to 28 missionaries, the Lord has filled in every single spot,
and then some. This week we welcome 12 new missionaries from
the MTC as well as 16 mini missionaries from within our mission
boundaries!
We invite you all, wherever you may go, to hold a special goal
making session this week for the upcoming transfer with your new
companion.
Whether they be goals for baptism, piso
maintenance, morning exercise, language study, etc., just do it.
We especially emphasize this for those who are training or
companioned with a mini missionary to take this seriously.. This is an
exceptional mission with exceptional missionaries. We talk with the
first person we see and we run home if we are late.
Are we up for this great challenge? Elderes y Hermanas of El
Faro, yes. We are now a very young mission. Many of you will be
put to the test. Lets make our Heavenly Father proud. He has
blessed us so muchand He will continue to do so So lets do this
thing! Hurrah, hurrah for Israel!!

member family and she has

we had a baptism of an
Ecuadorian couple Betty,
and Carlos. We were so very
happy and blessed to see the

of
this
couple
because they had been so
very prepared by God and
put in the right place in the
right time. The husband
contacted us in the street a
few Sunday's ago, and asked
when the church opened,
they hadn't missed since. We
were able to help them with
a situation they were in when
they lost their job and home,
we helped them find a place
to stay with a member and
with a little job. It was such a
blessing because we were
the only people they really

knew on the island and that

felt comfortable to talk to so it
was very special that they
trusted us to be able to help
them out and luckily God
had prepared them so very
much to be baptized. Their
daughter is a member and I
know for sure her prayers
were answered when they
walked in to the water on
Saturday night. We were able
to Skype the daughters who
are living in Ecuador, and
they were all crying because
they were so happy and it
was something so very
special. I will never forget that
moment for the rest of my life
it was such a blessing of God
to have them be so prepared
for us!
