Steps to apply Earthquake Loading in STAADPro 07

1. First analyze the structure for Dead load, Live load and Wind
load as per regular procedure.
2. Create a separate copy of file using save as command.
3. Now for further procedure use the second file or copied file.
4. Open the file and assign the pin supports to all the column
&Beam joints (only for column joints)
5. Now run the analysis for Dead Load & Live Load only. ( Never
use Wind Load)
6. To get the reactions for every node copy the results from post
processing to separate excel file. (Node Reactions only)
7. Now from excel sheet of reactions delete all column, except
column of Node no. & column of Fy reactions. Also delete
the heading of all columns.
8. Add one more column in excel sheet with text weight in
front of each node no. & followed by the column of Fy
reactions
9. So the final excel sheet only consists of node ----weight-----Fy
reaction
10. Now open the original file of structure (delete the copied file)
11. From Definitions add seismic definition, give all correct data
i.e. Zone factor, Importance factor, Strata condition, Depth of
foundation, damping factor (0.05) etc.
12. Add two new load cases named as Earthquake in X-dir.
&Earthquake in Z-dir. Now also add seismic exposure factor as
1 for each respective direction.
13. After adding all the seismic parameters, open the STAAD
Editor
14. In editor change the load case numbers i.e. change the load
case no. as
(1 for earthquake in X-dir)
(2 for earthquake in Z-dir)
(3 for dead load)
(4 for Live load)

15. In STAAD editor after seismic parameter line add a text as

joint weight & to the next line paste the table prepared in
Excel earlier.
16. Close the STAAD editor, save the file & Run the analysis.
