Summary
The Serbian-Bosnian Board was founded in Belgrade, in August 1860, with the
knowledge of the Serbian Government and the Prince. The foundation of the Board was
supported by the Russian diplomacy through Slavophiles. The sponsor of the Board was the
Serbian Metropolitan Mihailo, to whom Prince Milo assigned the task to maintain relations
with the refugees from Turkey. Immediately before the foundation of the Board, the secretary of the Moscow Charity Committee Ivan Sergeevi Aksakov stayed in Belgrade. He
brought to Serbia (in July 1860) the well-known Epistle from Moscow to the Serbs, which
represented the basis of the Slavophile beliefs about the position of Serbia and Orthodox

Christianity in the Balkans. Upon his return to Moscow, Aksakov ensured the amount of
3000 ducats, which was enough to finance the work of the Board during several months.
The paper determines the notion of Old Serbia according to the standpoints of that time, and
investigates the role of certain persons who were engaged in the preparation of the uprising
or represented a link with the Serbs from Old Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The largest number of collaborators of the Serbian-Bosnian Board were refugees from Bosnia, which
explains its name. The six-member Main Board included Zarija Kurti, from the Vranje region, as a representative of Old Serbia. The Board maintained links with Russia through the
consulate in Belgrade, Russian embassy in Vienna and protopresbyter Mihailo F. Rajevski,
a priest of the Russian church at the same embassy. In a detailed plan about the preparation
of the uprising, it was designed that in the vicinity of Kosovska Mitrovica an auxiliary corpus should be organized, which would prevent the penetration of the Turkish army from the
direction of Rumelia. The organizers also counted on the cooperation with the Miriditis.
The total rebellious force comprised 32000 Serbs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, 8000 from
Old Serbia, 3000 Montenegrians and 20000 Miriditis.
Significant attention is devoted to the reforms in Turkey, which the Porte, despite
passing the reformatory law and obligations adopted at the Paris Peace Treaty (1856), carried
out very slowly and negligently. After the war in Italy (1859) and weakening of the Austrian
influence in the Balkans, Russia increased the pressure on Turkey. Russian diplomacy criticised
unsuccessful measures undertaken by the Grand Vizier Kibrisli Mehmed Pasha during his
tour of some parts of Old Serbia and Bulgaria (1860). Upon the completion of the Grand
Viziers trip (in October 1860), the Serbian-Bosnian Board sent Zarija Kurti with a courier
to Old Serbia and Macedonia. At that time, new complaints were filed by the Serbs from Old
Serbia, which confirmed the standpoint of the Russian diplomacy that Kibrisli Pasha did not
do anything significant in improving the position of the Christian population. The paper
also investigates the relation of Serbia with Montenegro, both when it comes to the Herzegovina uprising and to the possibility of a general uprising in the Balkans and the war of the
two countries with Turkey. Standpoints of the president of the Board, Matija Ban, about the
uprising and the arrangement of the Balkan region after the liberation from Turkey, differed
to a great degree from the standpoints of other members of the Board. Preparations for the
uprising in 18601861 were closely related to the occurrences in Italy and the indications about
the disembarkation of the Italian, Hungarian and Polish legionaries in the Balkans. The
Serbian-Bosnian Board represented one stage between the propaganda organization from the
end of the 1840s and the beginning of the 1850s, and the preparations for the uprising which
were undertaken after Ilija Garaanin became the head of Government, in December 1861.

Summary
The Monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village Ratievina
near Herceg-Novi was located within the hamlet Potplanina after which it bore the common
and most frequently used name. The presence of the brethren is testified in the oldest
preserved Venetian land-register of Herceg-Novi, completed in 1690, which includes the
fathers-monks as the owners of property in the neighbouring village Mojde, but also the
property in Sutorina and Meljine. Later, during the 18th century, the documentation of the
Venetian Archives in Herceg-Novi mentions an entire series of monastery head-abbots and
monks in Potplanina, starting from the father Isaija (Vitomirovi) in the first quarter of the
18th century, to the father Nikodim (Lazarevi) in the first half of the 19th century. In case of
the Archimandrite of Savina, very reverend father Arsenije Milutinovi, there is a certain
overlapping in heading both monasteries in Herceg-Novi. As it can be seen from the census
(Note od Soli) of the village Ratievina, the monastery brethren remained there through the
entire time of the Venetian rule. Certainly, one should take into account very serious indications about Potplanina as a seat of the second Serbian bishop in Novi at the end of the 17th
century.

Le Congrs de Paris avait proclam la libre navigation sur le Danube, mais le contrle
de la navigation et de la vie conomique dans les provinces danubiennes de lEmpire ottoman
restaient aux mains de lAutriche. A lt 1856, Magnan, le capitaine franais, examinait, en
naviguant le long du Danube et de la Save, les conditions de la navigation et la possibilit
dtablir les liens commerciaux entre la France et les provinces septentrionales de la Turquie.
Aprs des entretiens avec les commerants serbes en sont venus la conviction commune
que les produits naturels seraient mieux utiliss si la Serbie rduisait sa dpendance conomique de lAutriche. Au mois davril 1859. le prince Michel a rencontr deux fois Paris le
capitaine Magnan. Magnan avait prsent au Prince un plan visant tablir des liens entre
la Serbie et la France et un service de navigation permanent pour les bateaux franais sur le
Danube et sur la Save, le long de la rive serbe et turque. En principe, ils se sont mis daccord
pour que la Compagnie franaise obtienne la permission du travail et le terrain ncessaire
pour la construction dune usine de production et de rparation des machines navales. La mme
usine serait quipe pour la production des canons et des munitions pour larme serbe. Les
milieux daffaires franais nont commenc sintresser pour linvestissement dans les
mines serbes que lorsque la Principaut stait oriente vers la France sur le plan politique
international. En outre, aprs le trait de Paris, la situation politique gnrale tait favorable
la pntration de capital franais dans cette partie de lEurope et lintervention de lEtat
dans les mines connait lchec. Bien que les forces du pays, selon des apprciations, prvisions
et conclusions, aient t trop faibles pour rsoudre ce problme toutes seules, on acceptait
de concder des mines au capital franais. Lintrt des hommes daffaires trangers pour
les richesses minires de la Serbie sest accru quand a t mis en perspective lexploitation
des mines Majdanpek. Grce la nouvelle orientation politique de la Serbie vers la France,
le capital franais avait les chances les plus grandes dobtenir Majdanpek. Les Franais se
sont engags dans les trois domaines : obtenir Majdanpek, tablir le service de navigation et
le commerce sur le Danube et de prendre bail la mine de charbon Dobra (prs de Poa
revac). Il tait de la plus grande importance pour la situation en Serbie que la Principaut se
dgaget la fois du monopole autrichien de la navigation sur le Danube et du bail russe de
la mine de charbon Dobra. Lors des ngociations sur la navigation le prince Michel et le
capitaine Magnan avaient ngoci Paris la concession de Majdanpek. Le 31 aot 1859 le
prince Milosh avait donn son consentement ladoption dun projet de trait commun, et,
la base de celui-ci, de conclure un trait entre le Gouvernement serbe et Magnan et Bouillon,
reprsentants de la compagnie franaise qui avaient obtenu la permission dexploiter
Majdanpek, la mine de charbon Dobra, et dtablir le service de navigation sur le Danube.

NIKOLA PAI AND BULGARIANS GENESIS OF THE POLITICAL
AND IDEOLOGICAL ATTITUDES

Summary
Nikola Pai was one of the most prominent politician and statesman in modern and
contemporary history of Serbia and Yugoslavia. His influence on internal and foreign policy
was great. He was born near the border with Bulgaria and spent a several years as a political
emigrant (18831886), having escaped from the regime of King Milan Obrenovi, who convicted him to death.
The Pai attitude towards the Bulgaria and Bulgarians we are analyzed in several
phases. In the first phase (up to the Second Balkan War), Pai sincerely advocated for the
full cooperation of Serbia with other nations in the Balkans, especially with the Bulgarians.
He believed that the federation of Serbia and Bulgaria, th best way to get rid of Turks in the
Balkans, and to resist the pressure of the other Great Powers, especially Austria-Hungary.
To begin the Second Balkan War, Pai was blamed the bulgarian politicians because they
secretly cooperated with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, against Serbia and Russia, and so they
issued a Slovens interests in the Balkans. After the war Pai was leave idea of alliance
with Bulgaria.
The First World War was the culmination of the Serbo-Bulgarian conflict. The Bulgarian forces who occupied Serbia have committed many serious crimes against the civilian
population. For all crimes against innocent serbian people Pai was blamed the whole Bulgarian people, not only the government and the king.
We can say that Pasic was a friend of the Bulgarians, but the historical circumstances
in the Balkans have made him one of the biggest opponents of the Bulgarians.

A Contribution to the History of the Rakovac Monastery

Summary
According to a legend, the first mentioning of the Rakovac Monastery dates from 1498,
which would include it among the oldest monasteries in the Holy Mountain Fruka Gora. It
was destroyed several times during the Turkish rule in Srem, and under the Habsburgs it
became a very important literary and transcription centre of the Serbian nation, specially at
the beginning of the 18th century, when the famous Rakovac Srbljak was written in the
Monastery in 1714. Since very little is known in history about the ways how the objects for
religious service got to the Monastery, every, even the smallest fact about that deserves our
attention. Within that framework, we present a list of the property from the end of the 18th
century which is kept in the Archives of The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in
Sremski Karlovci. Unfortunately, a great deal of the church riches was irretrievably lost
during the 20th century, due to robbery and burning of monasteries by the Austrian-Hungarian and Croatian Ustasha army, that is its partial destruction during World War I and total
destruction during World War II.

PAVLE STAMATOVI IN SERBIAN NATIONAL MOVEMENT 1848/49.

Summary
The article is related to activities of priest from Novi Sad, Pavle Stamatovi, in Serbian
National Movement in the course of the Revolution 1848/49. In the two years of intensive
struggle to ensure better political future for the Serbs in Austria, Stamatovi executed numerous significant tasks. Leaning on archival materials, the author made an attempt to establish what duties Stamatovi was tasked with and in what manner he was fulfilling them.
Certain Stamatovis contemporaries attribute him a decisive role in Serbian National
Movement in pre-revolutionary stir. He was a member of the delegation to consign demands
of Novi Sad Municipality to Hungarian Diet in March 1848. The following month, supreme
judge of Kikinda District Luka Kengelac notified newly established Hungarian authorities
that Stamatovi incited leaders of riots in Kikinda on April 12th.
Afterwards, he participated in May Assembly (from May 1st to May 3rd 1848) as a
deputy, visited Prague as one of Serbian envoys to Slavic Congress (May 19th to May 31st),
was sent to Belgrade in order to request military assistance for Serbian Vojvodina from Serbia (beginning of July 1848) and distinguished himself in September Assembly (September
27th to October 2nd 1848), on which occasion he contributed certain financial resources to
Serbian National Movement.
In 1849, Stamatovis national work is manifested mainly in his diplomatic activities.
The need for intensification of diplomatic activity occurred after the situation at battlefields
in Baka and Banat had switched on behalf of the Hungarians during the course of March.
Within the framework of extensive efforts to provide military aid for the Serbs in Vojvodina
and thus prevent further Hungarian penetration on Serbian territory, the delegations were
sent to commanders of Russian forces in Wallachia and Croatian banus Josip Jelai. Both
of these delegations included Stamatovi.
Historical sources revealed what were Stamatovis engagements in the course of 1848
and 1849. On the basis of available archival materials the conclusion can be drawn that
Stamatovi made the largest contribution to Serbian National Movement as a diplomat. Nevertheless, one cannot exclude the possibility that new documents regarding his participation in
the Revolution would be found. It is highly probable that materials of Hungarian and Austrian
archives may provide answers to certain unanswered questions in relation to Stamatovi.

Trade Turnover in Customs Houses between Serbia
and Austria-Hungary in 1867

Summary
In the Hungarian State Archives in Budapest, in the documents of the Hungarian royal
prime minister, the author found a very contentful report of Szepesy Mihly, councillor in a
section of the Hungarian ministry of finances, about the total trade turnover in all Austrian
customs houses located in the state border with The Princedom of Serbia, from Sremska
Mitrovica in the west, to Orsova in the east. Szepesys report contains reliable facts about
the scope, value and kind of export, import and transit. It shows that the so-called Austrian
eastern trade was positive, that the Austrian and Hungarian export, both in weight and in
value, almost three times surpassed the import, but that the trade could have been even better
and more extensive, if there had not been obstacles, specially the ones in traffic due to the
non-regulated navigation on the Danube in Djerdap, and if the new railway had been built to
simplify and speed up transport from the south to the north, from Constantinople towards
Budapest and in the opposite direction. Extensive and rich in valuable and so far not sufficiently known facts, Sezepesys report written in the Hungarian language is presented by
the author in detail, without leaving out any significant fact.

Summary
As a noted Serbian historian and an Orthodox theologian, Radoslav Gruji was a convenient organizer for Yugoslav national affairs in so-called Southern Serbia. He was one of
those who established Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje in 1920. A few years later, when he
appeared a founder of Skopje Scientific Society and Museum of South Serbia, one could say
it was an overt attempt in proving the Serbian character of Macedonia. After the Second
World War ended Gruji was expeled from the Belgrade University by Court of Honor, in
spite of his sincere commitment to science and the state. His national and educational engagement from 1920 to 1937 resulted in initiation of higher education in Skopje, but also
preserving the archaeological heritage in Vardar Macedonia between the two world wars.
