The Nemanjies and the Statehood

of Duklja and Zeta, Montenegro

Summary
In the teritory of present Montenegro, in the period from the 10th to the 21st century,
there existed three states with different names: Duklja, maybe Duklja and Dalmatia, then
Zeta and at the end Montenegro. The names of these states were derived from geographical
names, not from the name of the Serbian nation who createad them. Duklja or Dioclitia was
named after the antique city Duklja (Docles), and Zeta after the river of the same name and
the river valley, while the oldest Montenegro represented a mountainous region within Zeta
which rose above Risan, Kotor and Budva. The original Duklja represented a small state
which at the end of the 10th century fell into the vassal position to the Bulgarian empire.
When the Byzantine emperor Basil II conquered Bulgaria in 1018, he subdued Duklja, too,
as well as other Serbian countries. The Serbs started the uprising against Byzantium, so
Prince Stefan Vojislav in 1037 restored the Serbian state with its centre in Duklja, to which
Travunia (Trebinje) and Zahumlje were added. The territory of the restored state was at
least three times larger than the original Duklja, so it experienced a fast political progress.
The ruler of that state, Prince Mihailo, got the dignity of the king from the Pope, and some
what later the bishop in Bar was raised to the rank of archbishop in 1089. These were the
most visible factors of statehood in the territory of Duklja, Trebinje and Zahumlje.
After a fast progress, there followed even a faster fall, already at the beginning of the
12th century. When the emperor Manuel I Comnenus (11431180) came to the Byzantine
throne, all Serbian lands were under his supreme rule. The coastal cities of Duklja with their
surrounding areas were within the Byzantine administrative unit theme Dalmatia
(Upper) and Dioclitia, headed by the emperors governor who had the title of dux. The re
gions inside the country were still governed by the rulers from the old Dukljanian dynasty,
as the vassals of the Byzantine emperor; however, they did not bear the title of the Byzan
tine king anymore, but the great prince.
The Serbian grand duke Stefan Nemanja liberated Duklja and Dalmatia from the Byz
antine occupation in 1185, considering this area an integral part of the Serbian state and his
grandfathers inalianable estate. The Serbian grand duke did not change the existing so
cial relations, the existing order, institutions, church organization, not even the borders ex

isting in the time of the last Duklja rulers. He gave the territory covered by the old historical
areas: Dioclitia, Dalmatia and Travunia (Trebinje) to his son Vukan, to rule that area as a
participating prince. Vukan was also officially given the title of great prince, borne by
the last rulers of Duklja. The great prince Vukan, and later his sons Dordje and Stefan, also
with the titles of the great prince, ruled their participative princedom from 1190 to 1253. All
the three great princes which succeeded one another in the natural order, enjoyed great and
broad authority. They had their army, their nobility (aristocracy), specific administrative
apparatus, they gathered state income, maintained diplomatic relations with the popes and
foreign rulers, recognizing at the same time the supreme rule of the Serbian grand duke,
and later king. It all strenghened and fastened the existing factors of statehood in the terri
tory of the former Duklja state, which more and more frequently started to be called Zeta.
The statehood was even more strengthened with the foundation of the Orthodox Zeta dio
cese in 1220, which by its spiritual jurisdiction set the borders of Zeta, and by its church or
ganization covered the entire area. In the mid13th century, the participative princedoms in
the Nemanjies state were abolished, but this attempt at centralization soon fell through.
The Serbian king Dragutin (12761282) gave Zeta and Trebinje to his mother Queen Helen,
who ruled her region as a true ruler from 1276 to 1308. After the withdrawal of Queen
Helen, Zeta was entrusted to the potential heirs of the Serbian throne, that is to the young
kings, first Stefan Duan (13211331), the future Serbian king and emperor (13311355).
The presence of the young kings in Zeta, as well as their aristocracy, army and local ad
ministration, continually strengthened all elements of statehood in Zeta.
When the Serbian Empire began to disintegrate, Zeta was among the first to gain in
dependence, already in 1360 headed by the Balies, which is at the same time a proof that
the statehood of Zeta was kept and preserved in the long period of the rule of the Nemanji
dynasty. The independent Zeta persevered in the period between 1360 and 1421, but it was
continually weakening and losing some areas due to the attacks of great neighbours, prima
rily the Turks and the Venetians. The last ruler of Zeta, Bala III Bali, remaining without
male heirs and seriously ill, ceded Zeta to his uncle, the titulatory despot Stefan Lazarevi,
the ruler of the Serbian state at the time. According to the established custom, despot Stefan
gave Zeta to his future heir, young master Djuradj Brankovi. When Djuradj Brankovi
became the ruler of Serbia, he entrusted the ruling of Zeta to his governors. In the mid
1450s, Serbia faced a deep crisis and neared its fall, so the aristocratic family Crnojevi
gained independence in Zeta. Duke Ivan Crnojevi moved his court to Cetinje, to Montene
gro, so he also built a monastery in Cetinje as the new seat of the Zeta metropolitanate. Ivan
Crnojevi and his son, the duke and master Djuradj Crnojevi carefully preserved and cher
ished all institutions which had existed at the age of the Nemanjies, and these are very im
portant factors of the Serbian statehood. With the movement of the seat of the Zeta metro
politanate and the court of the Crnojevices to Cetinje, the new nation-building core was
formed, in the area which was known under the name of Montenegro. When in 1496 even
the last part of Zeta fell under the Turkish rule, in Cetinje and Montenegro there still re
mained and functioned the Zeta metropolitanate which enjoyed great respect and reputation
within the Serbian Orthodox Church. It was the best guardian of the ecclesiastical, as well as
political heritage from the time of the Nemanjies, and particularly of some factors of state
hood which were preserved in the territory of the Zeta diocese. Thanks to the presence and
long-lasting activity of the Serbian Orthodox metropolitanate in Cetinje, after a long time and
with great sacrifices of the people, the Serbian state was restored in one part of old Zeta, in
Montenegro, so the present state of Montenegro was named after the name of that region.

PAVLE STAMATOVI S A NATIONAL PUBLICIST

Summary
This article sheds light on publicist national activity of Pavle Stamatovi (18051864),
a priest, historian and man of letters. According to the field of activity, the presented articles
are divided into three categories. The first category includes Stamatovis texts discussing
the manner to improve Serbian national education. The second group of texts is related to
Serbian history. Eventually, the third group comprises articles aimed to incite more inten
sive cooperation among Slavic peoples.
Among Stamatovis articles regarding enlightenment of the Serbs one should empha
size appeals for material contribution, as education cannot be improved without material
resources, and good national education represents the key prerequisite for the formation of
national consciousness.
Historical works in most cases overestimate Serbian nation. The reason is easily fath
omable the articles are intended to encourage the Serbs to resist Hungarization. Exposed
to constant pressure to renounce their nation, Stamatovis fellow people would be able to
find the motive to maintain their opposition towards assimilating state authorities in the
content of his articles.
Stamatovis contribution to encouragement of all-Slavic unity is expressed mostly in
writing articles praising every new achievement in the fields of education and culture of
Slavic peoples and advocating intensification of their cooperation. As Serbian press was read
by non-Serbian panslavists, such appeals could not remain unnoticed. Doubtlessly, these
texts to a large extent helped to build Stamatovis reputation as one of the leading Serbian
panslavists.
Having carefully weighed which of the three areas of Stamatovis publicist national
activity brought about the development of Serbian national consciousness to the greatest
extent, led primarily by the criterion of practical utility, we opted for his historical works.
On one hand they woke the spirit of political struggle among the Serbs, and on the other ed
ucated readers, acquainting them with people and events that would otherwise fall into ob
livion.
Diversity, intensity and effects of aforementioned publicist national activity assert the
allegations of renowned Serbian historian Milan . Milievi that Stamatovi was a true
patriot, who would, according to his own words, be happy when he learns that Serbia is
happy. Therefore, we are not surprised by the fact that The Serbian Bee (the periodical ed
ited by Stamatovi) had more than 1500 subscribers, many of whom were the most eminent
names of the Serbhood from Arad to Trieste.

Summary
One of the greatest and most popular writers among the Danubian swabians, Adam
Mller-Guttenbrunn (18521923) has only recently become more familiar in terms of Ser
bian historiography, to which he was introduced through the works of Branko Belin and
Zoran Janjetovi. However, numerous issues related to him remained open, namely his
political and ethnic ideology, most notable works and their impact on the Germans in the
Danube Basin, as well as Guttenbrunns relationship with the German minority in Vojvo
dina during the opening years of the interwar period. Beside focusing on some of these
questions, paper also provides a short overview of most prominent works dealing with Gut
tenbrunns life and opus.

Summary
Aim umi, professoe, minister, prime minister, a person sentenced to death, is the
most colourful example of a Serbian politician from the second half of the 19th century. He
was born to a poor family, was educated with the help of the state and as a grantee stayed in
Heidelberg and Paris. His career had the course typical of that time. He started as a profes
sor in a grammar school, and to him his professorship at the Higher School was only the
next step towards a political engagement. With many ups and downs, vacillating from a so
cialist to a conservative and from the follower of the Obrenovi dynasty, through the fol
lower of the Karadjordjevi dynasty to the idea about foreign monarchs, umi left a deep
trace in the history of Serbia. The most turbulent period of his life is the time which he
spent as a minister and the prime minister of Prince Milans Government. These two figures
which were similar in many respects, crossed the path from great mutual respect to conflict
and irrational hatred. umi, like Prince Milan, was praised and criticized, adored and dis
puted, but never outspoken or outvoted. The only way to remove such a fugure from the
scene was to accuse and convict him, even to death, for a never proved act. Like for many
others, jail was harmful for umi. After serving the sentence, he did not practice politics
anymore, and in time did less and less public work. The only idea that he continued to fight
for was the Serbian national idea which he consistently defended till the end of his life.

Unrest in Uice due to the Abduction and Forceful Islamization
of a Serbian Little Girl in 1819

Summary
During August 1819, in Uice there appeared serious conflicts between the Moslems
and the Orthodox Christians after a female child, enslaved and illegally kept in one of the
Moslem city houses, managed to escape to the city lodging-house of the Uice ruling prince
Jovan Mii. In search of her, a group of the local janissaries and land-owners committed a
crime when they killed one of Jovan Miis men and returned the girl to the Moslem
Smailagis house. Since she was illegally kept in custody and she was forced to accept
Islam against her will, the Serbian authorities in the Belgrade pashaluk initiated a procedure
with the Belgrade vizier to save her. Since the situation could get out of hand, an active part
was played by the Belgrade vizier himself. After this situation, which could grow into some
thing exceeding local significance, was solved, there were no instances of enslavement and
forceful islamization of girls in the Uice district.

Charter of Patriarch Kalinik I

Summary
In the Church Office fund (Turkish Piskoposluk Kalemi) of the Archive of the Presi
dency of Goverment in Instanbul, there is a certified transcript of the charter of Partiarch
Kalinik I (16911710). The transciption was made by the judge from Skoplje Mehmet Emin,
between April 17 1691 and February 7, 1695, probably for the need of a court process which
Patriarch Kalinik initiated around 1693 against Ahmet, the son of Mustafa Sakol-Pasha
about the exploitation rights for the estates of the monastery of the Pe Patriarchate.
In its structure, this document does not significantly deviate from the usual pattern
according to which pontifical charters were prepared at the end of the 17th and during the
18th century. The facts about the procedure of issuing of a charter are of special signifi
cance, because they offer a possibility to overcome the dilemmas and mystifications related
to the origin and identity of the Patriarch Kalinik. It is clear now that Kalinik did become
the head of the Serbian Church under the Turkish rule in the spring of 1691. He submitted
the appeal for the patriarchs nomination himself at the end of March or the beginning of
April that year, introducing himself to the authorities as an inhabitant of Skoplje. Lowering
of the annual tax for Serbian Church for one third of the former value and exemption from
peke (gift) point to the fact that Kaliniks appeal was not processed in a routine way, but
that the key role in the manner of his appontment was played by the Grand Vizier MustafaPasha uprili (168891). On the basis of that, one can conclude that the author of the bio
graphical notes in The General Chronicle of the Pe Patriarchate is a more reliable source
than the insuficiently informed nadsometimes malevolent archbishop from Bar VientijeVicko Zmajevi, who noted down an obviously invented story about Kaliniks Greek origin
and his kin relations with Alexandros Mavrokordatos.

A Contribution to the Biography of Count Mercy

Summary
Count Claudius Florimund Mercy (16661734) of Lorrainian descent, in service of
Habsburg Monarchy, undoubtedly stands for one of the most prominent figures in history of
Banat. After this province had been conquered by Austrian forces in 1718, Mercy served as
its first governor. During his time in office, outstanding results have been accomplished,
mainly in terms of economic growth. Although he was given full credit by latter DanubianSwabian historiography (primarily because of his policy on German colonization), Mercy
remained overshadowed by his much more popular contemporary, friend and superior Prinz
Eugen von Savoy. Danubian Swabians wrote numerous works thoroughly analizing Mercys
life and work, whereas historians of other nationalities inhabiting Banat failed to provide
him scientific attention that he definitely is worthy of. Therefore this paper offers a short
overview of bibliography on the subject at hand, as well as translation of the oldest known
work regarding this topic, namely the short biography written by one of the founding fathers
of local history in Banat Johann Heinrich Schwicker.

On the Defection of the Serbian Population from Banat
to Baka during the First Half of the 18th Century

Summary
Defection of the population from Banat to Baka, and sometimes to a smaller extent
vice versa, was a very frequent phenomenon in the first half of the 18th century. The author
presents statistical data about the defections and the correspondence of the district, chamber
and higher state authorities about the return of the defectors, as well as the measures for the
prevention of such undesirable fluctuation of subjects. This is testified by the documents
from 1719 to 1725, according to which the defection in both directions included several
hudred persons. The paper also presents a document with the names of the defectors from
Banat to Baka, who were settling in the Baka district, specially in Cseb, for many years.

Facts about the Border Family Vojnovi from Mazin
(the Lika Regiment)

Summary
Milo (Mihajlo) Vojnovi was born on February 15, 1821 (old style) in the village
Mazin in Lika, present Croatia, which belonged to the Lika border regiment. On the basis of
the facts related to his family, one can assume that under the influence of his older brothers
(Danilo and Vasa) he chose the military vocation and that as a young officer of the imperial
army he happened to be near Sremski Karlovci, the centre of events of the Serbian Revolution
in 1848/49 in which he, so far an unknown participant, had a significant role. This paper
presents not only the facts about his family and their family tree, but also the facts which
greatly shed light on the further path of this outstanding figure of the Serbian National
Movement in 1848.

Summary
The Serbian National-Ecclesiastical Assembly in Sremski Karlovci was held on The
Annunciation day in 1861 and thus got its name The Annunciation Assembly. It lasted from
April 2 to April 20, 1861.
It was the last attempt to establish and preserve the privilege from the Serbian Na
tional Movement in 1848/49 Serbian Vojvodina. This was not in the Vienna Court interest,
because due to the concurrence of political circumstances (defeat in the war with Italy and
France) the Court opted for the federal organization and yielding to the Hungarian side.
The Assembly did not manage to fulfill its wishes and decisions. It is believed that
The Annunciation Assembly in Karlovci was the first appearance of paraliamentarism
among the Serbs in their modern history. It is important to underline that this paper dis
cusses the problem to which in such occasions little attention is paid, and this is the expens
es of The Assembly, accommodation of the participants of The Assembly, of the members
of their delegations, as well as their nutrition.
Tradition of accommodation of the participants at the national-ecclesiastical assem
blies was long in Karlovci almost two centuries with shorter exceptions which are men
tioned in this paper, therefore from 1713 to 1918.

der berfhrung, Exponierung und Bestattung der Leiche weiland
Seiner Majestt Knig Milan I
Nachdem die Leiche weiland Seiner Majestt angekleidet ist, wird dieselbe
in den bereit gehaltenen Sarg gelegt und in dem hiezu bestimmten Gemache
aufgebahrt.
berfhrung.
Donnerstag, den 14. Februar 1901, um 10 Uhr abends, wird die allerhchste
Leiche eingesegnet und der geschlossene Sarg von k. und k. Leiblakaien erhoben
und auf den bereit stehenden, mit sechs Rappen bespannten schwarzen Leichen
fourgon gebracht.
Trabanten-Leibgarden und Leibgardereiter leisten hiebei die Nebenbeglei
tung.
Der Leichenzung setzt sich nun in folgender Ordnung in Bewegung:
Zwei Hofreitknechte mit Laternen,
eine Abtheilung Cavallerie als Avantgarde,
ein Hofeinspanier zu Pferde,
ein Hof-Obercommissr zu in einem zweispnnigen Hofwagen,
ein Hof-Commissr zu Pferde,
ein zweispnniger Hofwagen mit zwei k. und k. Kmmerern,
ein zweispnniger Hofwagen mit dem, als Obersthofmeister fungirenden
k. und k. geheimen Rathe,
zwei Hofreitknechte mit Laternen,
der Leichenfourgon mit dem Sarge:
zur Seite rechts gehen sechs Trabanten-Leibgarden mit Hellebarden und zur
Seite links sechs Leibgardereiter mit gezogenem Seitengewehr, mit ihren Chargen,
zu beiden Seiten gehen je vier Leiblakeien,
dann die zur Aufsicht des Leichenfourgons bestimmten Personen;
zwei Hofreitknechte mit Laternen,
ein zweispnniger Hofwagen mit dem serbischen Gesandten,
ein zweispnniger viersitziger Hofwagen mit den brigen Herren der serbi
schen Gesandtschaft,
ein zweispnniger viersitziger Hofwagen mit dem Kammerpersonale des
Allerhchstverblichenen,
eine Abtheilung Cavallerie als Arrieregarde.
Zu beiden Seiten des Zuges bildet Militr ein ambulantes Spalier.
Der Zug nimmt den Weg von der Wohung (I., Johannesgasse Nr. 16) ber
die Ringstrasse, den Schwarzenbergplatz, den Rennweg in die Veithgasse zur
serbischen Kirche.
Bei der Kirche wird der Sarg durch Kammerdiener und Leiblakaien von
dem Leichenfourgon gehoben, und von der Geistlichkeit empfangen.
Hierauf wird der allerhchste Leichnam in die Kirche getragen.

Ein Hofcommissr,
die geistliche Assistenz,
ein Hof-Obercommissr,
treten hiebei vor.
Zwei Arcieren- und zwei ungarische Leibgarden, dann vier TrabantenLeibgarden und vier Leibgardereiter leisten neben dem Sarge die Begleitung.
An jeder Seite desselben gehen ausserdem vier Edelknaben mit brennen
den Wachswindlichtern.
Der Obersthofmeister, der serbische Gesandte und die brige Begleitung
folgen dem Sarge.
Nach Einsegnung der auf das Schaubett gehobenen allerhchsten Leiche
wird die Kirche geschlossen.
Exposition.
Freitag, den 15. Februar, um 8 Uhr Frh, beginnt der Einlass des Publikums
in die Kirche zu der im geschlossenen Sarge exponirten allerhchsten Leiche.
Die Kirche ist schwarz ausspaliert, die Betsthle sind schwarz berzogen,
an den Wnden sind die Wappen des Allerhchstverblichenen angebracht.
Das ringsum beleuchtete Trauergerst ist mit schwarzem Tuche, und die
Stelle, wo der Sarg steht, mit Goldstoff bedeckt, oberhalb ist ein schwebender
schwarzer Baldachin aufgezogen.
Auf dem Schaubette sind die Insignien und Orden des Allerhchstverbli
chenen auf Sammtplstern ausgelegt.
Whrend der Exposition sind die Ehrenposten am Schaubette von den
Leibgarden besetzt.
Um 12 Uhr wird der ffentliche Einlass eingestellt.
Einsegnung.
Um vier Uhr findet die feierliche Einsegnung der allerhchsten Leiche in
der serbischen Kirche statt.
Seine k. und k. Apostolische Majestt und Ihre k.und k. Hoheiten die
durchlauchtigsten Herren Erzherzoge nehmen die Zufahrt beim Hauptportale
und begeben Sich directe in der Kirche.
Die serbische Gesandtschaft, die fremdlndischen Vertreter, die Hof und
Staatswrdentrger, die Prsidien der beiden Huser des Reichsrathes, die Ge
neralitt und der Brgermeister von Wien, sowie die eventuell anwesenden ser
bischen Deputationen haben sich schon vorher nach Massgabe des Raumes in
oder vor der Kirche eingefunden.
Der als Obersthofmeister fungirende geheime Rath, dann die beiden Km
merer stehen hinter dem Sarge.
Sechs Arcieren- und sechs ungarische Liebgarden, dann je vier Edelkna
ben mit brennenden Wachswindlichtern nehmen die Stellung an beiden Seiten
des Sarges.
Nunmehr erfolgt die feierliche Einsegnung durch den serbischen Patriarchen.

Leichenbegngnis
Nach stattgefundener Einsegnung wird der Sarg durch Kammerdiener un
ter Beihilfe von Leiblakaien, vom Schaubette herabgehoben und zu dem vor der
Kirche aufgestellten Leichenwagen getragen und auf denselben gehoben.
Den Leichenzug erffnet ein Zug Cavallerie, dann folgen:
Ein Hofeinspanier zu Pferde,
ein zweispnniger Hofwagen mit einem Hof-Obercommissr,
ein zweispnniger viersitziger Hofwagen mit Kammerdienern,
eine Escadron Cavallerie,
ein Hofeinspanier zu Pferde,

genschlage ein Leiblakai,
ein sechsspnniger Hofwagen mit dem den Obersthofmeister vertretenden
geheimen Rathe, an jedem Wagenschlage zwei Leiblakaien,
der mit sechs Rappen, bespannte schwarze Leichenwagen mit dem Sarge.
An jeder Seite gehen vier Edelknaben, mit brennenden Wachsfackeln, so
wie vier Leiblakaien.
Sechs Arcieren-Leibgarden rechts,
sechs ungarische Leibgarden links,
von Aussen:
acht Trabanten-Leibgarden rechts und
acht Leibgardereiter links, leisten die Nebenbegleitung;
Leibgarde-Infanterie bildet ausserhalb beim Leichenwagen ein ambulantes
Spalier;
ein zweispnniger Hofwagen mit dem serbischen Gesandten,
ein zweispnniger Hofwagen mit den brigen Herren der serbischen
Gesandtschaft,
eine Compagnie Infanterie und
eine Escadron Cavallerie machen den Schluss.
Der Zug nimmt den Weg ber den Rennweg, durch die Jacquingasse, uber den
Landstrasser Grtel zum Staatsbahnhofe (Hofwartesalon-Seite).
Auf dem Wege sind Truppen als Spalier aufgestellt.
Sobald der Leichnezug sich von der Kirche entfernt hat, beginnt die Ab
fahrt des Allerhchsten Hofes und dann der brigen Anwesenden.
berfhrung der Allerhchsten Leiche nach Krusedol bei Karlowitz
Am Staatsbahnhofe wird der Sarg durch Kammerdiener und Leiblakeien
von dem Leichenwagen gehoben und bis zum Waggon des bereitstehenden Se
paratzuges getragen.
Die Nebenbegleitung geht bis dorthin mit, die brige Begleitung folgt dem
Sarge.
Nach der Unterbringung des Sarges in dem Waggon wird der letztere
geschlossen, die zur Begleitung bestimmten Personen verfgen sich in die Wag
gons, worauf sich der Separatzug in Bewegung setzt.
Whrend der Fahrt finden in den Stationen keine Aufwartungen statt.

Ankunft in Karlowitz
Die Allerhchste Leiche trifft Samstag, den 16. Februar, vormittags am
Bahnhofe in Karlowitz ein und wird dortselbst mit militrischen Ehren, dann
von den Spitzen der Civil- und Militr-Behrden empfangen.
Hierauf wird die Allerhchste Leiche mittelst Wagen nach dem Kloster zu
Krusedol gebracht.5

Summary
The duneral rite of King Milan Obrenovi in Vienna was completely organized ac
cording to the rules of the Court Ceremony. The positions for standing in the church were
determined in detail, as well as the transfer of the remains of the former Serbian ruler from
his apartment to the church, but also from the church to the train which carried them to
Sremski Karlovci. The funeral rite was attended by The Emperor Franz Joseph himself with
the presence of the highest dignitaries of The Empire. King Milan Obrenovi was buried in
the monastery Kruedol in Fruka Gora.

Summary
In the context of the development of the world and the Serbian historiography, the paper
discusses edomir Popovs historical trilogy dedicated to the history of Europe the long 19th
century. The author analyzes contemporary research approaches to history of this historical
epoch, theoretical and methodological assumptions which provide the basis for the interpre
tation of the European 19th century history propounded by Popov in his synthesis Gradjanska
Evropa (Civil Europe), as well as its place in the history of the Serbian historiography. The
paper points to the innovative combination of the postulates of traditional and new history
which Popov applied in the interpretation of the history of Europe in the 19 th century,
underlining the significance of the influences of Marxist historiography, British social history,
French Annals School, as well as Pierre Renouvins concept of the history of international
relations.

Summary
On the occasion of a 100th anniversary of birth of the historian Jeremija Mitrovi, the
oldest living Serbian historian, the author wrote his biography. He acquainted the readers
with his place and year of birth, social background in which he grew up and went to school.
He presented the facts from his biography related to the prewar, war and postwar time, and
pointed to the political problems which Mitrovi had during German occupation of Serbia and
to the difficulties he faced at the time of the communist rule, when he was even imprisoned.
The author discussed in detail Mitrovis working biography, when he, for a short period of
time, was a secondary school professor, an assistant at The Department of History of The
Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade and a librarian at The National Library of Serbia. The
author dedicated special attention to the professional-librarian works of J. Mitrovi and his
studies on Serbian newer national history.
