Title

1. Effects of
Vitamin A,
Vitamin A plus
iron, and
multiple
micronutrientfortified
seasoning
powder on
preschool
children in a
suburb of
Chongqing,
China

Research
question

Hypothesis

Study
Participants

Investigate the
efficacy of a
seasoning
powder
fortified with
iron, zinc,
calcium, niacin,
folate, and
vitamins B1,
B2, and A on
improving
biochemical
micronutrient
indices,
growth, and
developmental
status of
preschool
children aged
2-6y in a
suburb of
Chongqing,
China

The fortified
seasoning
powder
used once
daily over 6
months
could
effectively
correct the
vitamin A
and iron
deficiencies
and growth
of preschool
children

Preschool
children (2-6
years old)

Micronutrient
powder
used/composition
package 1: vit A
alone (500 g),
package 2: vit A
(500 g), iron (12
mg), package 3: vit
A (500 g), iron (12
mg), B1 (0.7 mg),
B2 (0.7 mg), folic
acid (0.2mg), B3 (7
mg), zinc (12 mg),
calcium (800mg)

Method
RCT - Food
(porridge,
soymilk,
soup, and
noodles)
prepared
with the
seasoning
powder
were given
to children
at lunch or
snack time,
5d/wk
during the
study
period.

Results

Interpretation

> Hb
concentration
increased
significantly
within each
treatment group
but no significant
differences were
found between
groups
> Serum ferritin
decreased in
each treatment
group

Increased levels
might be due to
the function of
retinoid in te
regulation of
apoptosis, or
programmed ell
death in erythroid
progenitor cells

> RBP increased

in group II and III
and decreased in
group I
> Serum ferritin
decreased in
each treatment
group
> HFA increased
in all groups,
WFA increased in
groups I and III,
WFH increased in
group I

Iron as ferric
sodium edetate
may be unstable
in dry mixtures;
may be
attributed to vit A
supplementation
which ould
inrease the
greater
mobilization of
iron from storage
tissue
