GLOSSARY:

Bending Loss
Attenuation occurring as a result of either a bend in an optical fiber that exceeds
the minimum bend radius or an abrupt discontinuity in the core/cladding interface.
Coating/Jacket
An outer protective polymer layer of the fiber optic cable (usually polyurethane or
PVC)
Core
The core is the central region of the optical fiber where the light is guided. It is
generally made of glass.
Cladding
The cladding which is generally made of glass or plastic is the region of the fiber
surrounding the core.
Fiber optics
A communications technology or technique using light signals for the
transmission of information through fibers
Mandrel
The definition of a mandrel is a spindle, rod or shift on a lathe that something can
be fixed to while being turned or being shaped.
Propagation Loss
