Abstract
The Harmon lignite bed of the Fort Union Formation
(Tertiary Age) beneath western North Dakota presents
opportunities for applying underground coal gasification
(UCG)technologytorecovertheunmineablecoalresources.
However,somecharacteristicsoftheformationalsopresent
barriers. First, the local aquifers coincide with the lignite
bed; second, the lithology of surrounding rocks changes
greatly within a short distance. These factors set challenges
in site screening, feasibility study and assessment of
environmentalrisks.Althoughextensiveinvestigationwork

toinvestigatethestructureandpropertiesofatargetsitein
westernNorthDakota.Informationanddatafromstateand
federal geological surveys, water resource commission and
oil companies are collected. A 3dimensional model is built
to simulate the Harmon lignite bed, surrounding rocks and
aquifers. This coal reservoir characterization work
providesaclearviewofthestructureandcompositionofthe
lignitebearing formation, as well as a better understanding
ofitsinsitugeologyandhydrogeology.Resultsofthiswork
greatlyfacilitatetheUCGsiteselectionprocess.Suitabilityof
thepotentialsiteforUCGprojectsisdiscussed.

differenceandisinvolvedinthereactions,particularly
the watergasshift reaction, to increase hydrogen
content in the product gas (Linc Energy, 2006).
However, water influx is also controlled by the
permeability of the surrounding rocks, and could be
higher than the desired quantity for chemical
reactions. Excessive water influx will decrease the
calorificvalueoftheproductgas.Thesecondmethod
is toselect asite with shalepronesurrounding rocks.
Shalerockshavelowerpermeabilitythansandyrocks,

propagation of contaminants from the gasification
zone(Suryetal.,2004;Zhaoetal.,2013).Therefore,we
proposethattheclaycontentofthesurroundingrocks
shouldbeconsideredasanimportfactorinUCGsite
selection. Since the physical variation of the strata is
mainly controlled by depositional environment,
sedimentology reports about the target site can
provide a rough, but fast, image of the isolation
capability of the surrounding rocks. If coals were
depositedindeltaicorfluvialsuccessions,theywould
be likely to be overlain by permeable layers. If coals
were formed in a lacustrine system, they would be
likely to be buried by shales or highclay content
rocks,thereforewithgoodisolation.Inadditiontothe

Itisclearthatforthelayerwhichis9m(30ft)below
the coal seam, the clay content is higher than 80% in
most part of it. According to the simulation result,
about 88% of the overburden by volume is claystone.
The locations of the gasification zone should be
carefully selected to avoid the lowclay content rocks
forthepurposeofpreventingcontaminantsleakage.

HydrogeologicalConditions
Theselectedlignitebearingformationinthecandidate
site coincides with the Lower Tertiary Aquifer. This
confined aquifer consists of sandstone beds,
interbedded with shale, mudstone, siltstone, lignite
and limestone. It is one of the five major aquifers in
theNorthernGreatPlainsAquiferSystem.TheLower
Tertiary Aquifer is not highly permeable, but is an
important source for water supply due to its large
quantity(USGS,2010).Accordingtothedescriptionin
the USGS report, water recharges into the aquifers at
outcropshighaltitudeanddischargesfromtheaquifer
into major streams, such as the Missouri River. From
the local groundwater resources report of Dunn
County(Klausing,1979),aquifersintheTongueRiver
