SENATOR KATHLEEN BANNON OF LINCOLN INTRODUCED THE FOLLOWING BILL,
WHICH REFERRED TO THE GIRLS STATE COMMITTEE
A BILL
TO AUTHORIZE RHODE ISLAND MUNICIPALITIES TO USE PUBLIC LANDS FOR
INVOLVING SCHOOL CHILDREN (K-12) TO HAVE THE AFTER SCHOOL
OPPORTUNITY TO GET INVOLVED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES, LEARN HOW TO GROW
THEIR OWN SUSTAINABLE FOOD AND LEARN VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE SENATE OF LITTLE RHODY GIRLS STATE

THAT: THE MUNICIPALITY PROVIDENCE, PAWTUCKET, WARWICK,
WEST

WARWICK, WOONSOCKET, AND CENTRAL FALLS SECTION OFF
SMALL PLOTS

IN THEIR PARKS THAT WOULD ALLOW (K-12) STUDENTS IN THE
PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO

GROW VEGETABLES IN AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM
WILL DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN

SCHOOL AGES. YOUNG CHILDREN (K-6) WILL LEARN ABOUT
NATURAL FARMING AND BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE NUTRITIONAL
VALUE OF

A DIVERSE DIET. OLDER STUDENTS (7-12) WILL BE GEARED
TOWARDS MORE IN DEPTH AGRICULTURE

TECHNIQUES, CAREERS AND WILL BE THE LEADERS OF THE
GARDENS.

THIS PROGRAM WOULD BE FUNDED IN COMBINATION WITH THE
LOCAL

EDUCATION FUNDS AND STUDENT CONTRIBUTION. THE SMALL
STUDENT FEE

WOULD BE $10. THIS WOULD COVER THE RENTED GARDENING
SUPPLIES.

THE APPROXIMATE AMOUNT OF FUNDING WOULD BE $2,000 PER
GARDEN.

THIS INCLUDES THE PRICE OF SEED, FERTILIZER AND GARDEN
PRODUCTION.

THE PLOTS WOULD BE MAINTAINED BY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
IN THE

AREA. THIS PROGRAM WOULD RUN FROM THE BEGINNING OF

SEASON (MARCH) AND END WHEN THE HARVEST IS OVER. CHILDREN

PICKED ON THE BASIS OF MERIT AND INTEREST. ALL OF THE CAMP
COUNSELORS AND

BE PAID.
