Student/Parent Agreement for Enrollment in

Advanced Placement and Pre-Advanced Placement
Courses
AP and Pre-AP classes offer a high degree of rigor designed to prepare the student for success in
higher academic pursuits. The purpose of a Pre-AP course is to prepare students for college-level work
that they will experience in Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit (DC) classes. SAISD encourages
all students to enroll in available AP, DC, and Pre-AP classes to enhance their academic experience.
Students must have passed the most current STAAR Reading Assessment in order to enroll in Pre-AP
ELA, Social Studies, or Science classes. Students must have passed the most current STAAR Math
Assessment in order to enroll in Pre-AP Math classes.
AP courses differ from regular high school courses in that instructors use advanced curricula that is
outlined by the College Board and authorized through the College Boards audit process. AP courses
provide college-level instruction and culminate in AP exams that are designed by the College Board.
Students who successfully complete AP exams may receive college credit.
SAISD has Dual Credit agreements with Howard College and Angelo State University.
At the end of each grading period, students enrolled in Pre-AP classes must have maintained at least
a 70 average. Any student with an average below 60 will automatically be placed in a regular level
class. A student with an average between 60 and 69 will have an opportunity to bring their average
back to the minimum 70. If the average falls below 70 at the end of a second grading period, the
student will automatically be moved to a regular level class.
Because Pre-AP, AP, and DC courses are characterized by such things as content immersion, a fast
pace, and assessment of performance at the analysis and synthesis levels, the following expectations
have been outlined.

For the Student: Stay focused, actively participating in class 100% of the time. Set aside time outside of school for
advanced academics study time daily. Finish all assignments by the due date. Exhibit the performance standards you
will need in college. Form study groups. Challenge your peers. Do extra research. Ask questions. Seek tutorial
assistance if warranted. Tutorial attendance may be required if the students course average falls below a 75 during a
grading period. All students enrolled in an AP class are expected to take the AP exam in May. There is a fee for this
exam.

For Parents/Guardians: Become a partner with the teacher to help achieve optimum student success. Support
students in the planning, preparation, and time necessary for success in advanced academics classes. Recognize that
advanced academics requirements are equal to, not secondary to, UIL activities and after-school jobs. Recognize the
advanced academics classes are college-level or honors-level courses and have higher performance-level requirements
than traditional classes. Extend the learning environment beyond the classroom and help guide students in their
personal career planning and long-term goals.

Teacher: Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing teacher training through College Board and other advanced training.
Ensure quality resources are used and aligned to advanced academics curriculum demands. Possess a personal
commitment to student performance. Teach using a variety of teaching styles. Develop teacher-parent partnerships to
promote academic excellence. Fully participate in regular advanced academics departmental meetings and district
Vertical Team meetings to exchange ideas, develop support systems, and examine performance data.

SAISD strongly believes that Pre-AP, AP, and DC courses provide enhanced academic opportunities for
students that will assist them in future academic or nonacademic pursuits. At the same time, the
District recognizes that students may experience initial surprise or difficulty in managing the
increased course requirements. To ensure students allow sufficient time to become acclimated to the
classes and what the Pre-AP and AP curriculum can offer, the District expects that any student who
enrolls in a Pre-AP or AP class will remain in the course for the entire first six-week grading cycle.
