MONSOON WATCH
· Conditions are becoming favourable for onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala during next 3-4 days.
· The Northern limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to pass through Lat.5.0°N/ Long.70.0°E, Lat.5.0°N/ Long.75.0°E,
Lat. 8.0°N/Long. 80.0°E, Lat. 12.0° N/ Long. 84.0°E, Lat. 15.0° N/ Long. 87.0°E, Lat. 18.0° N/ Long.90.0°E and
Lat. 21.0° N/ Long. 93.0° E.
MAIN WEATHER OBSERVATIONS
(Recorded during past 24 hours).
· Heat wave conditions are prevailing over some parts of west Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh and coastal
Andhra Pradesh.
· The highest maximum temperature of 47.6°C was recorded at Bikaner (Rajasthan).
· Maximum temperatures have fallen by 2-5 °C over parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya,
North Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, by 1-2°C over parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh,
Vidarbha and Telengana during past 24 hours. No significant change in maximum temperatures occurred over
rest of the country outside coastal areas of north Andhra and south Orissa where they risen by 2-3°C during the
same period.
Synoptic features (based on 0530 hrs IST)
· Incursion of moisture is taking place over northeastern states under the influence of strong
southerly/southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal.
· The western disturbance as an upper air system over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir now lies
over Jammu & Kashmir & neighbourhood.
Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Guidance
· An upper air cyclonic circulation may form over southeast Arabian Sea during next 2-3 days.
· The western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India during next 2-3 days.
Satellite Observations:
· KALPANA–1 Cloud imagery at 0530 hours IST shows convective clouds over parts of eastcentral Bay of Bengal,
Andaman Sea and south Arabian Sea. Low/medium clouds are seen over parts of Western Himalayan region,
Uttar Pradesh, east, northeast India and Kerala.

Major features of weather forecast (upto 0530 hours IST of 31 May, 2010)
· Scattered rain/thundershowers would occur over Kerala, Lakshadweep and Coastal Karnataka and fairly widespread
over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during next 48 hours and increase thereafter.
· Fairly widespread rain/thundershowers would occur over northeastern states.
· Fairly widespread rain/thundershowers would occur over Jammu & Kashmir and scattered over Himachal Pradesh &
Uttarakhand during next 24 hours and decrease thereafter.
· Isolated thunderstorm/duststorm over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh.
· Isolated thunderstorm/duststorm over Rajasthan during next 48 hours.
· Scattered rain/thundershowers over West Bengal & Sikkim and isolated over Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Uttar
Pradesh.
· Dust raising winds would prevail over Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh during next 2-3 days.
