This document outlines three homework problems about fluid mechanics that are due on February 22nd. The first problem involves evaluating the minimum velocity and net momentum flux of a fluid flowing through a square channel with a 90 degree bend. The second problem requires calculating the external force needed to hold a circular dish in place when struck by a water jet. The third problem involves finding the horizontal force required to hold a 180 degree elbow in place using given inlet and outlet properties of water flowing through it.

1. Water enters a two-dimensional square channel of constant width
h = 75.5 mm with uniform velocity. The channel makes a 90o bend that distorts the flow to produce the linear velocity profile shown at the exit, with v max = 2v min . a) Evaluate v min if U = 7.5 m/s. (5 pts) b) Evaluate the net momentum flux through the channel. (10 pts) b) If flow at the inlet is at p 1 = 185 kPa (abs), flow at the exit is nonuniform, vertical and at atmospheric pressure, the mass of the channel is 2.05 kg and the internal volume is 0.00355 m3, evaluate the force exerted by the channel assembly on the supply duct. (20 pts)
2. A shallow circular dish has a sharp-edged orifice at its center. A
water jet, of velocity V, strikes the dish concentrically. a) Obtain an expression for the external force needed to hold the dish in place if the jet issuing from the orifice also has speed V. Evaluate the force for V = 5 m/s, D = 100 mm and d = 20 mm. (10 pts) b) Plot the required force as a function of the angle (0 90o) with diameter ratio as a parameter for a suitable range of diameter d. (15 pts)
3. Water is flowing steadily through the 180o elbow shown. At the
inlet to the elbow the gage pressure is 96 kPa. The water discharges to atmospheric pressure. Assume properties are uniform over the inlet and outlet areas: A 1 = 2600 mm2, A 2 = 650 mm2, and V 1 = 3.05 m/s. Find the horizontal component of force required to hold the elbow in place. (15 pts)
