PrerequisiteConcepts
Actandpotency
Whenanobjectchanges,thisentailsthatisacertainwaybutpotentiallydifferent.Forexample,
anacornisactuallyaseedbutpotentiallyanoaktree.Giventherightconditions,that
potentialitywillbecomeanactuality:theseeddevelopsintoanoaktree.
Buttheconceptisbroaderthanjustchange.Eventheexistenceofathingatanymomentwill,
often,involvedanactualizedpotency.Forexample,theexistenceofanoxygenmoleculeatany
momentdependsuponthemolecularbondsholdingitscomponentatomsinplace,and
thereforetheexistenceoftheoxygenmoleculeentailsanactualizedpotency.
OntologicalPriority
Next,weneedtounderstandtheconceptofontologicalpriority.AnobjectAisontologically

moleculepresupposestheexistenceofmolecularbonds.Ifmolecularbondsdontexist,then

TheArgument
Apotencyisnotyetactual/existent.Thepotentialoaktree(actualacorn)isnotyetactual.Since
apotentialdoesnotexist,itcannotmakeitselfactual.Apotencycanonlybemadeactualby
somethingthatisalreadyactual.Inotherwords,actualityisontologicallypriortopotency.
Therefore,ontologicallypriortoanypotenciesatallissomethingpurelyactual:something
withoutanypotencies.
