Mrs.

Casteel's Math Syllabus 2016-2017

Bonnie Casteel | bcasteel@cdwildcats.com | (580) 864-7849 | @MrsCasteel84
In this Class
This year Oklahoma released new academic
standards. Oklahoma Academic Standards serve
as expectations for what students should know
and be able to do independently by the end of the
school year. In this class, we will cover the new
standards. Students will be tested over the new
content at the end of the year.
Each minute of class time will be used, to help
students gain a deeper understanding of the
standards. Come prepared to learn!

Grading System
Grades are based on 80% assessment and 20%
practice.
Assessment grades include quizzes, unit tests,
and semester tests.
Practice grades include bellwork, dailywork, and
interactive notebook grades.
Grading Scale
A: 90 100%
B: 80 90%
C: 70 80%
D: 60 70%
F: 0 60%

Interactive Notebook
Students will be creating an interactive notebook in
a composition notebook. This notebook will feature
typed and handwritten notes, example problems,
foldables, interactive study tools, and anything
else students may want to reference later. Many
of the notes we take will require cutting, gluing,
coloring, and sorting. These activities are designed
to engage students in the learning process. In
this classroom, math is learned by doing, not by
watching. It is crucial that students bring their
notebook to class daily.
The interactive notebook will be checked once per
unit for completeness.

Daily Work
In class, students will learn in a variety of ways
including independent practice, group work, and
one-on-one. Homework WILL NOT be assigned,
however if your child does not use class time
wisely they may have work to finish daily work at
home.
To receive credit for any work in this class, you
must use a pencil and show your work. A list of
answers is not acceptable. It is difficult to identify
errors/questions if you do not have work to
support your answers.
Latework will be taken until the end of each 9
week grading period for partial credit.

There will be
NO EXTRA CREDIT.
Grades will be
a true reflection
of academic
achievement.

Assesments
All assessments are to be done in pencil.
Students must show work. If students do not
show their work it is hard for the teacher to
identify where the student is making an error.
Retakes
Students are encouraged to retake assessments
for full credit provided that additional steps
have been taken to learn the material. This may
include classroom tutoring, additional practice
and/or video tutorials as determined by the
teacher. Students may retake an assessment as
many times as they want, but only once per day.
All assessments given during a 9 week period,
must be completed by the end of that grading
period.

Warm-Ups
Warm-ups will be completed in the first 5 minutes of class. Warm-ups will be completed in
pencil and your must SHOW all your work.

Supplies
Students must bring the following supplies
EVERYDAY!
Composition Notebook,
loose-leaf paper, and pencils.

**The above materials are the property of Covington-Douglas

Public Schools and will be returned at the end of the school
year. Nonconsumable materials not returned must be paid for.

Calculators
Per the new Oklahoma Academic Standards
students in 6th & 7th graders may use a basic
four-function calculator with square root and
percent. 8th and 9th grade students may use a
scientific calculator.
Students may use the calculators in the classroom
or bring their own. The calculators in the
classroom will be not be available to take home.

Classroom rules
Students are expected to be polite, prepared,
prompt, productive, positive, and
participate! This classroom operates on a 3
three strikes and youre out policy. In other
words, three strikes and you get lunch detention.
Students will have their names written on
the board if they come to class late, lack the
necessary supplies, fail to participate or follow
directions, or act disrespectfully. If the student
misbehaves again, a checkmark will be added
after their name. A third misbehavior will result in
another checkmark and 15 minutes of detention.
Each additional checkmark will result in an
additional 15 minutes detention.
Names and checkmarks will be erased at the end of each week.

In some cases, this policy may be skipped

depending on the level of the offense.

Absences
Absences: Regular Absence: If you miss class,
you may come in before school to get help on any
assignment. You have as many days to complete
the assignment as your were absent. You will also
need to update your ISN.
School Activity Absence: If a student will miss
because of a school activity it is their responsibility
to come in advance of the absence to obtain notes
and assignments. If the student needs help with
the assignment that they have missed, they must
come in before school on the day they return to
school. If the student does not come in before
school, it will be assumed that they understood
the assignment and it will be due in class. Students
that are absent the day before an assessment will
still be expected to take it on the scheduled day.
Students that are absent the day of an assessment
will be expected to take it on the day that they
return to school.
