INTRODUCTION

This is based on secondary data.

A reputed source provides information based on questionnaire.
The data reflect the overall response for each year.
Each year the respondents (minimum 35) answer on a 5 point Likert scale.
(Taking 1= Very Bad , 2=Bad, 3=OK, 4= Good, 5= Very Good)
So my secondary data looks like

But still I can easily determine the trend line and R Square value from this input.
PROBLEM
Now in year 2015 the same source provides the same information but on a 9 Point Likert Scale.
(Taking 1= Very Bad ,new elements like reasonably Good/ Bad included. 9 = Very Good)
But lets remember that the end points viz. 1 & 9 are exactly same as 1 & 5.
The only change is within the extremes not outside it.
Following picture summarize my understanding of this change in Likert Scales.

SUGGESTIONS INVITED FOR

Now my Questions
1) How to interpret change from the given data by finding respective TREND LINES and R Square Values w.r.t time.
2) As represented in the picture- if possible can you please suggest what needs to be done in these two different cases
viz when the scale becomes denser as well as when the scale is elongated?
3) Supporting reading/ Published work/ tutorial/ online video lecture pertinent to this.
