Convent
praying
for a sale
BENN DORRINGTON
A FORMER convent in regional Victoria is looking for a
buyer to resurrect it to its
former glory.
The Mt Carmel Convent
opened in 1928 in Rutherglen,
with 10 sisters in residence.
The nunnery, at 50-70
High St, was a primary and
secondary school before it
closed in 1989.
Now the gothic-inspired
building is being offered in
original condition with open
fireplaces and stained glass
windows across its two-storey
floorplan.
The 0.96ha property also
has a freestanding classroom
and an assembly hall.
Stanley & Martin sales director Scott Wilkie said they
were considering offers above
$1.3 million.
Its in a raw condition,
which is an advantage for
someone coming in to make
their own changes, he said.
In the main building, there
is a formal entry, eight main
rooms, a chapel and a kitchen
with the original wood stove
on the ground floor. Upstairs
are 11 bedrooms.
Mr Wilkie said possible uses
were a very large residence, a
boutique hotel, a B&B or a
function centre.

HOUSES SECRETS
ARE LEFT UNTOLD
IF the walls of this Hillside
home could talk, they would
tell an interesting story.
The property was the
home of underworld widow
Roberta Williams in the early
2000s, during the height of
Melbournes gangland war.
With its notorious past
now behind it, 20 John Paul
Drive has recently been listed
for sale as a family home.
Agents think its link to Ms
Williams, the former wife of
late crime figure Carl
Williams, could give it a
boost when it goes under the
hammer next month with
price expectations of more
than $590,000.
Barry Plant Taylors Lakes
director James Hatzimoisis
said records showed Ms
Williams bought the house
in 2000.
She then sold it to the
current owners in
2003, he said.
According to

BENN DORRINGTON AND

SAMANTHA LANDY
CoreLogic RP Data, the
property sold for $280,000 in
February 2000, and then for
$450,000 in October 2003.
We dont know too much
about the history besides
that she owned it, Mr
Hatzimoisis said.
From a notoriety point of
view, maybe people will want
to have a look.
Mr Hatzimoisis said the
five-bedroom two-storey
home was much larger than
most in the area.
It features multiple living
zones, a gym or home
theatre, three bathrooms and
a double garage.
In the backyard is a
covered outdoor entertaining
zone, solar-heated
swimming pool and
a self-contained
pool house or
granny flat.
