INDEPENDENT READING RECORD


Students choose books that are appropriate to their reading ability and explore the different
genres below.
* Students should include books from the AP test list or classics. pre-AP at least 3. pre-AP
Advanced at least 5. These should be marked with an * to the left.
# In addition, students should read at least four books that are set somewhere other than the
United States. These should be marked with a # to the left.
REALISTIC FICTION A modern-day story using made-up characters and situations that
happen in real life.

HISTORICAL FICTION- Fiction set in the past based on historical events with fictional and/or
historical characters.

SCIENCE FICTION Fiction in which a writer explores possibilities of the past or future where
science/technology is integral to the plot.

FANTASY Fiction that is highly imaginative and portrays events, settings, and/or characters
that are unrealistic.

ORAL TRADITION myths, folk tales, and fairy tales. These may be book-length or collections.

MYSTERY Fiction in which a detective (either professional or amateur) investigates and solves
a crime or mystery.

POETRY collections of poems or novels told in verse

ANTHOLOGY collections of writings by theme, genre, topic, or author.

BIOGRAPHY/AUTOBIOGRAPHY/MEMOIR True accounts of a persons life

INFORMATIONAL NONFICTION Written material that provides factual information.

GRAPHIC NOVEL A fictional story that is presented in comic-strip format and presented as a
book (novel).
