Math

This week students took their first math test. For each topics

test students will take tests online through Pearson Realize. They are definitely meant to be challenging for students as preparation for standardized
testing. Im still working out a way to send home test scores since it is all
online. Bare with me. Extra credit is always offered the night before the
test. Students were told to take me up on the extra credit when it is offered. Its not offered upon request.

ReadingOur story next week is Island of the Blue Dolphins.

We will

practice the reading skill of theme and setting. We will continue working on
writing a well thought out constructed response.

Grammar

Our grammar skill next week is making nouns possessive. We

will practice identifying correct possessive nouns and making possessive

nouns. Miss Smith will take over teaching grammar next week.

Writing

This week students were exposed to many different Tall Tales.

We dived into the genre and discussed characteristics of a Tall Tale. Next
week students will begin writing their own Tall Tale based off of the many
Tall Tales we have read.

Spelling-

Our list focuses on long vowel digraphs. Visit

www.spellingcity.com to access the lists, games, and practice tests.

Social Studies

This week we explored the various regions of the

United States and the features of each region. Students created their own
United States map made up of their individual regions maps. Next week we
will finish up our Geography unit by reviewing what we have learned and taking our Geography test. We will then move on to our Native American unit.

Science-Students had a blast experiencing several investigations this

week. Next week we will process our investigations and tie the Scientific
Method to each one. We will also spend time discussing variables and why we
control them in investigations.

Note From the Teacher:

If you notice graded homework coming home with make corrections at the top of it, its because that assignment received a low enough score to be a D or F. For any assignment that is
failing (D or F) students have the opportunity to make corrections and turn that assignment
back in the next day . The assignment will be re=graded and then the score will be averaged. This
will help students save valuable points and correct mistakes they are making on their work.
This year the fifth grade teachers decided to host a Parent Info meeting. We dont want to add
more to your plate, however, we have discovered that many issues we face at the beginning of the
school year (the most important time to set the tone for the year) could be resolved by having a
brief meeting to go over the most crucial information that gets lost in the shuffle. We hope you plan
on coming next Tuesday, August 23 at 6:00 pm to catch some important information and ask questions.
