The article analyzes two almost identical headpiece miniatures in the manuscript
with canons (No. 321, fol. 22) in the Museum of Serbian Orthodox Church in Bel
grade, and in the manuscript with akathistos (No. PP I 16, fol. 4) in the Library of
Matica srpska in Novi Sad, both dated roughly to 17th Century.
The two headpieces present similarly conceived interlaced structure with mandorla
in the center featuring a male haloed figure without caption. The man is dressed in
lavish long costume with broad sleeves facing a tree shown as elaborate labyrinthlike interlace. Having presented a bibliographical world-wide survey of research
of ornament the author argues that the hitherto unidentified figure most probably
stands for Moses in front of the Burning Bush, based on iconography and typology
and the first lines in both introductory chapters in the manuscripts. In the canons
prayer book one reads on crossing of the Red sea and flight from Egypt, while in the
akathistos prayer book there is direct comparison of the Virgin to the burning bush,
the well known Old Testament prefiguration for Mary, Mother of God.
Furthermore, the author examines possible origin for the illumination which de
picts Moses vision of God in the Burning Bush, the branches of which being ren
dered as the interlace resembling a labyrinth. The well known semantics of interlace
and labyrinth as the cross-cultural idioms as put by James Trilling, seems to have
been deliberately chosen by the anonymous artist in representing the holy of the
Sinai vision. The author also made an attempt to uncover ties with Semitic, Oriental
or Ottoman influences obvious in style and details of both miniatures. The rendi
tion of the Burning Bush as interlace stemming from the floral frame of the header,
despite being unique example, provides another clue demonstrating that medieval
art did not consider ornament as a meaningless arabesque but that it frequently
functioned as a signifier.
