Lance: Dont you just love music? I listen to it every day. I think
its one of the best things ever created. Whats your
favorite kind of music, Devin?
Devin: Im a big fan of classic rock and pop. I guess that if I had
to make a choice between those two, Id have to go with
classic rock. Its the music that I grew up listening to.
What about you?
Lance: I love pop, classical, and techno music. I know it sounds
crazy because they are all so different. Techno is definitely
my favorite though. Are you into techno?
Devin: No, it is a little too weird for me. The repetitive beat makes
me feel like Im going nuts. Plus, I think dance music
should have lyrics. Of course, thats just my opinion.
Lance: Really? I like the fact that it doesnt have any words. You
see, the beat is what I love most about techno. It leaves
the music open to interpretation.
Devin: Thats very interesting. Ive never thought about it like
that. I guess you have a point there. Now, I think I can see
why you like it.

Music therapy is an interpersonal process in which a therapist


uses music and all of its facetsphysical, emotional, mental,
social, aesthetic, and spiritualto help clients improve or
maintain their health.
In some instances, the client's needs are addressed directly
through music; in others they are addressed through the
relationships that develop between the client and the therapist.
Music therapy is used with individuals of all ages and for a
variety of conditions: psychiatric disorders, medical problems,
physical handicaps, sensory impairments, developmental
disabilities, substance abuse, communication disorders,
interpersonal problems, and aging.
It is also used to improve learning, build self-esteem, reduce
stress, support physical exercise, and facilitate a host of other
health-related activities.
