1) Structural Composites or Layered composites

1. Structural composites are the types of composites whose properties not only depend
on the type of particles in dispersed phase but also on the geometrical design of the
composite
2. Based on the type of geometric design of composite structural composites are
further classified into two types
1. Laminar composites
2. Sandwich panel
1) Laminar composites

Arrangement of successive layer for

Producing laminar composites

1. Laminar composites consists of alternate sheets of either two different materials

Honeycomb Structure
or same fibre reinforced material arranged in different directions
2. This type of arrangement results in isotropic composites panels
3. Layers in laminar composites are stick with the help of adhesives
4. Alternate arrangement of layers results into very high strength of materials
5. Applications:1. Laminar composites are used in making false ceilings
Adhesive
2. They are also used in making furnitures
2) Sandwich Panel

Sandwich Panel Structure

1. Sandwich panels are light weight composite materials made up of two different
materials in which one is used as face sheets and other is used in the form of
honeycomb structure which is porous in nature
2. The honeycomb structure is sandwiched between two face sheets by adhesive
3. The sandwich panels have high strength and stiffness which is greater than
component materials
4. For face sheets strong materials like alloy, fibre, reinforced plastic, titanium, steel
etc are used
5. For honeycomb structure polymers like synthetic rubbers are used
6. They must be thick enough to withstand tensile, compressive stresses that result
from loading

Applications
1. Used in construction of light weight wings for aircrafts, fuselage
2. Used in making roofs, floors of buildings.
