Homework Assignment 2
Due: 22/8/2016 (At beginning of Class)

1. A three-phase motor is rated at 3000 HP. In steady state operation its efficiency is 90% and
power factor is 0.88. It is connected to a system as shown in Figure 1. The source voltage is
12.47 kV and the short circuit capacity of bus A is 40 MVA. The transformer is rated 12 MVA,
12.47/0.46 kV, 8% impedance. The sag observed at the motor terminal terminals during
starting is 15%. What will be the sag if two such motors are started at the same instant?

2. A three-phase motor is rated at 1000 HP is part of a system as shown in Figure 2. Bus A has a
short circuit capacity of 150 MVA. Source voltage is 12.47 kV. The transformer is rated
12.47/0.46 kV, 2 MVA, 10% impedance. What should be the NEMA letter rating (refer to the
class notes) of the motor be if the minimum voltage permissible at the terminals is 88% of
nominal? Choose a letter that is suitable without being excessively conservative.

3. A 3-phase, 220 kW induction motor, rated with full-load efficiency of 90 % and power factor of
0.85 lagging, has a starting current which is 7 times its full load value. The voltage dip at the
motor terminals during motor starting is 30 %. In order to enhance the security of the supply
to the motor, a second incoming source with a source impedance of 5 times the source
impedance of the original supply is connected.
a. Calculate the short circuit capacity (SCC) at the motor terminals before and after the
supply reinforcement.
b.

After the supply reinforcement, determine the amount of the voltage variations at
the motor terminals when the motor is
i. switched on
ii. switched off

(Hint: Please use 250 kVA as the system base VA).
