THE FUTURE OF
HYPERFLEXIBILITY
The hottest tech isnt just carried around in pockets
these jeans are the future.

Superior Comfort is the second

part of the Hyperex trifecta.
This is not the kind of denim
youll be rushing to change
out of at the end of the day.
It works with you rather than
constricts. That means more
time to make your move while
being dressed in the best.

A mans got to move. The Super

Elasticity on Freegos Hyperex
Jeans makes limitations a thing
of the past. The stretchiness of
the denim gives you hyperexibility in all aspects of your daily
tasks. It lets you move with full
condence when it comes to
looking cool and casual when
the clock strikes ve.

he future is here. Smartphones and tablets are

necessities, sure, but high-tech isnt exclusive
to gadgets alone. Even clothes are stepping up
their game. Self-lacing shoes, waterproof pocket
shorts, and even spray-on fabrics are all moving
from virtual to reality.
The great news is next-level technology has reached
denim, too. Freegos Hyperex Jeans is changing the game.
Theyre made with super elasticity and 98% fabric recovery

Hyperex boasts of Excellent

Fabric Recovery. After
giving you superior stretch
and comfort, it rebounds to
its original shape; ready for
another battle the next day.
No oppiness. No looseness.
No weakness. Were familiar
with typical jeans burning out
and reaching the end of their
lifespans way too quickly
(the price we pay for living at
high speed) but that isnt a
concern with this new denim
concept.

so they return to shape after wearing. Theyre also super

lightweight and comfortable for any time of the day or
any season. You can move freely without worrying about
damage, deformity, or discomfort.
Its not old-school tailoring magic. Its simply the future
of denim technology. When you step out in Freegos
Hyperex Jeans, that phone sitting in your pocket wont be
the only tech highlight of your look. It will be the sleek pair
of jeans you have on.

Freegos Hyperex Jeans comes in

three stylish shades: the dark Hyper
Clean, medium tone Hyper Wave,
and light Hyper Sand. All of them
exible for everyday wear, work, or
other special occasions. Available
in all department stores nationwide.

THINKING DOUBLE
Twinning even in your

FROM THE EDITOR

How long can you hold a

conversation with a woman?
Five minutes? An hour? Four hours? For as long as she can take your
conceit? Forget it you cant even begin?
The way I see it, youve already won her over the moment she fixes her gaze
on you while you speak. Shes thinking she doesnt have the time, but she can't
believe shes listening and that you actually might make sense. Youd have
taken out the fight in her if you make her laugh. Sounds clich but its true
that peal of laughter is the sound of a wall collapsing, and at that point she
may be thinking who cares what other people saywho cares what I say?!
this guy is interesting.
I have no absolute proof for this, but I do know that when we talked with
Rhian Ramos to plan this cover shoot in France, and finally when she sat
down for an interview when she got back, we caught the little gaze and the
intermittent laughter. We knew she was smart, so we had to ask the kind of
questions that would make her think, or risk losing her. All in all, we didnt
lose her, and we get to print the best conversation we can have with a woman
(and one of the best shoots weve had to date).
If it wasnt workif, say, we were just a normal guy who happened to be
in the company of a famous female celebrity and we had to make small talk,
Id say we did good. If we ever had dreams of going any further like, say,
marrying her, like what Ali Khatibi did with Christine Reyes, and Lloyd Lee
with Shamcey Supsup (Star Catcher p. 30), Id say we could get there if we put
in extra work, even if this guy is interesting doesnt mean jack shit. Ali and
Lloyd give us some tips on how to land a celebrity based on their experience,
and were throwing in the gaze-and-laugh detail for good measure.
Theres one other thing Id like to tell you about our time with Rhian. She
called us on the phone. It was because there were some things we failed to ask,
and it was our mistake. But no mattershe called.
If you hold a woman in conversation long enough that she calls you because
there were some things she still wanted to talk about, you have her.

Heroism is not just the monopoly

of men. Lily was a writer and a
student leader at the Pamantasan ng
Lungsod ng Maynila. In 1973, she
was arrested with friends when the
police did not find her sister in their
house. They threatened her with
torture and sexual molestation. She
declared to her captors, Democracy
is dead in the Philippines! After a
few days, she died in Camp Crame
under constabulary custody.
It was said that she committed
suicide by drinking muriatic acid
in a mens bathroom. But the family
would not believe it because when
they claimed her body, it was cut up
with a saw up to her vagina. They
took out her brain and stomach,
and, like dinuguan, tore them into
pieces. These were brought to the
funeral parlor in a pail, soaked in
muriatic acid. She died at 23, the
first under detention in a military
camp during Martial Law.

William Begg was a FilipinoAmerican Ateneo seminarian

who frequently immersed with
the urban poor. He joined the
Kabataang Makabayan. Despite
the fact that his whole family
were American citizens, he chose
to be a Filipino citizen. He was
kicked out of the Ateneo despite
being a candidate for the top
honors and was imprisoned for
months when Martial Law was
proclaimed. He went to UP, but left
it to join the New Peoples Army
in 1974. He was captured alive in
a military raid in Isabela in 1975
that left four other companions
dead. He was tortured to death
with seventeen stab wounds,
eleven gunshot wounds, a broken
rib cage and smashed hands.
He was 24. His orgmates at the

gave tribute to him, Hindi ka

EXPLAI N E R

May childhood
ka ba? You
never seem to
have anything to
contribute when your friends
talk fondly about their stupid
escapades when they were
younger. Maybe it was your
overprotective parents or
your inability to do anything
productive while a comfortable
couch and television were in
close proximity. A lot of factors
could have kept you from doing
the same things your friends
did. But now that youre older,
sort of wiser, and probably
more independent, whats
stopping you from becoming a
child all over again?
RIDE A BIkE
DOWN A
STE E P H I LL
Being a kid during a technology
boom, going outside never really
seemed like a fun idea. Why
play outside, when there was a
whole new world just waiting to
be discovered in front of your
computer screen? But now that
youre an adult, and are probably
sick of every darn software
update your computer alerts you
of, maybe its time to whip out
your old musty BMX for one last
ride into the sunset.
Expert tips: Focus on where
you want to go; not what you
want to avoid, says Chris
Allison, Program Director,
Indoor Cycling and Rowing
SADDLE ROW Studios. Things
come at you much faster on a
downhill [slope]. All too often,
inexperienced cyclists might
see, for example, a pothole in
the road and become fixated on
it. Always remember, your bike
will go where you look.

It isnt really advisable to jump

if you really want to, just jump
feet first so that even if you
happen to reach the floor, youll
be able to kick off and reach the
surface faster.

Granted, it might be a bit
difficult to find clear air space
with all the telephone lines and
billboards blocking the view.
But few things rival the rush
of flying a kite. (Just ask Mary
Poppins, kids.) Theres a certain
satisfaction in flying a thing
that you created with all your
architectural engineering knowhow. Youll literally soar with
flying colors.
Expert tips: Use light
materials such as the coconut
mid-rib from a walis tingting,
which is common in Filipino
households, says Orlando T.D.
Ongkingco, President of Kite

material for a kite sail. You can
use tape or sewing thread, or
both, to attach the sail to the
kite frame. A tail of four to five
times the length of the kite is
also recommended for simple
Malay Kites.

Being naughtier than you should

Its a key part of developing riskreward management. Remember
that time you bragged to your

Do you remember being so

why not use a net instead?
Dragonflies exoskeleton

*puts on matrix

we told you we

common topic for

but how is

cloning research

W H AT I S
CLONING?
Technically
speaking, it's just
the production of
several genetically
identical copies
of an organism.
Its the process of
introducing pieces
of recombinant DNA
(read: DNA made
through laboratory
methods of genetic
combination) to
cells. Its a common
practice in molecular
biology labs and can
be used in many
different ways.
W H AT A R E
STEM CELLS?
Stem cells are very
important products
that come from
cloning because they
are the only cells
that can differentiate
into any of the adult
cell types. This is
important because as
we grow older, other
kinds of cells become
specialized into
performing only one
specific function.

EGG CELL

BUT STEM
CELLS COME
FROM UNBORN
BABIES!
While they can come
from destroying
embryos created from
heterosexual sex,
they can also come
from performing
Somatic Cell Nuclear
Transfer (SCNT).
The process involves
taking the nucleus
of a somatic cell (not
sex cell) from the
donor organism and
transferring it into an
enucleated egg cell. If
it starts dividing, the
egg cell is implanted
into a surrogate
mother.

SCNT can also

Because it isnt

at least right now.
While we do have the
technology to make
organs, animals, and
even humans, the
cloning process is still
mostly trial-and-error
with significantly more
errors. Before Dolly
was cloned, the team
had to go through a
lot of dead sheep:
those that werent
cloned correctly in
the lab, those that
didnt implant right

that were stillborn,
those that were born
alive but died out of
abnormalities and
various sicknesses.

Be at the right
place, at the right
time.
Ali and Lloyd say they
met their wives at a
party. A birthday party,
specifically: Ali and
Christine at Raymond
Gutierrezs shindig; Lloyd
and Shamcey at her
birthday party at a village
clubhouse.
Of course, it helps that
the ladies were among
friends, feeling relaxed and
more ready to socialize.
Manila is a small town.
Look for connections that
can get you in the loop,
and snag an introduction.
1

Build yourself up,

buttercup.
Shes a star, so you also
have to have something
going for you. Ali is in top
form as an athlete. Lloyd,
who used to model, was
already very successful in
his career when he met
Shamcey. Have something
impressive in your resume,
something you are good
at and something you
worked hard for. This will
help even things out when
you are introduced. You will
have more confidence in
yourself, and it will separate
you from the slobs stalking
her on her social media
accounts. As Lloyd puts
it, Kailangan prepared
2

www.fhm.com.ph

ka rin, be somebody na
magugustuhan din niya.
Find common
ground.
Christine was actually
looking into training in
mixed martial arts when
she met Ali. This sparked
the conversation. She
said she was interested
in training. One day, she
just showed up, and began
training at the gym, where I
would see her more often,
says Ali. While it is always
good to put your best foot
forward, it also helps to be
true to yourself. You cant
sustain being a fake in the
long run, he adds.
3

Be respectful.
Need we say it?
Respect boundaries.
Show business can
be about putting up
fronts, so differentiate
yourself by behaving like
a gentleman. You cant
[stop them from] thinking
about what your motives
are. There are people
who are so starstruck
with the celebrity factor
and the fame, kaya
nagiging defensive [yung
celebrities] kasi baka
masaktan lang sila or
paglaruan. You just have to
be yourself and prove that
your intentions are pure,
Lloyd says.
4

Dont rush in.

I wasnt expecting
anything. Christine wasnt
expecting anything either,
Ali says. Lloyd advises
taking things slow. Hindi
ka niya mapagkakatiwalaan
if you are moving in too
fast. Kailangan ng kaunting
timpla; hinay-hinay ka lang.
If she wants, friendzone
muna kayo. And when you
think she is starting to fall
for you, then you can try
to take it to the next level.
Dont think that you are
the center of the world.
You have to consider if the
other person is ready to
get into a relationship, too.
Wait it out and let her feel
comfortable with you. It
may be hard, but at the end
of the day, it will be worth
it, Lloyd says.
5

Be the rock.
Show her that you
understand the nature of
her job. Its not easy being
a celebrity, with the crazy
schedules and when a
slight misstep can mean an
attack from Internet trolls.
Show her that you are
there for her, that you are
the rock, and that you see
her for who she really is. Ali
says that off-cam, Christine
is so maalaga and has a
good heart. People dont
see that; you can be the
one to remind her [of who
6

she really is] when things

get rough, says Ali.
Look presentable.
In a social mediasavvy fanworld, you might
end up with your photos
online, too. Both Lloyd
and Ali say they had to
pay more attention to their
appearance when they
started dating their wives.
I was used to flip-flops,
shorts, and white t-shirts,
Ali says. But then, you have
to start leveling up, because
people will take photos of
you, too. Thats when you
understand why [these
stars] have to go out of the
house all made up.
Its about being
appealing to the senses,
too, Lloyd adds. Dapat
mabango ka rin. Because
people will comment, Ang

ang pangit ng ka-date?

He broke into showbiz some 30-odd years ago via

the girl of your dreams.

Ang tamang swabe sa

panliligaw kailangan
walang drama, light lang.
Wag clingy masyado,
huwag masyadong
makapit . Hindi bale nang
bitin [basta] wag sawa .
Kahit sa text or sa tawag,
mas okay na yung bitin siya
kaysa sa sawang-sawa na
siya sayo.
Were you ever basted?
Oo naman ! Especially
growing up, kapag may
gusto akong ligawan, the
parents [were] against me.
Laging sinasabi na artista
yan : baka naka-drugs yan
o maraming babae yan.
Yon lagi ang impression
[ng tao ] of people from
showbiz, so mahirap. Well,
actually, mahirap manligaw
nang seryoso. Madaling
magloko kung kulitan lang.
Its actually hard for people
from showbiz kasi parang
may stigma na lolokohin ka
lang nyan, na madaming
babae yan tsaka puro party
lang yan. And I dont blame
them because marami rin
naman ganyan sa showbiz.
To get over heartbreak
I take a long motorcycle ride.
You would want to be in a
different place physically,
like maybe in another
country. Or, if you are used
to the city, go up to the
mountains. Id go up to the
mountains and just be quiet,
consolidate my thoughts
and my emotions and
contemplate. Usually, this
would bring your vibe higher
and your balance back.

Youll know if shes the

one when you want to
be around her 24/7.
Before I met my wife, I
couldnt imagine myself
being with the same person,
going to bed and waking up
with the same person every
day. With her, I felt that I
wanted her to be the last
person I see every night and
the first person I see every
day when I wake up. Thats
when I knew na siya talaga ,
and I have no regrets. It
was the best decision I ever
made and I feel the same
way up to now.
To get over being torpe
Thats me! I am torpe.
Totoo ! When I really, really
like a girl, name-mesmerize
ako agad, I get speechless.
I am the wrong person to
ask that. *(laughs)*
Be ready for a
background check.
For girls, my advice would
be to do a background
check [on your guy]. Tignan
niyo ang relationship niya
sa ex-girlfriend or ex-wife
and you will see if this guy
is a douchebag. Kung wala
siyang naging kaibigan sa
mga ex niya or sa mga dati
niyang niligawan or nakadate niya , then he is not
the right guy. Dapat walang
bitterness from their end.
To not be labeled
#Paasa and #Pahopia
Hindi ka dapat paasa .
Actually baliktad. Kasi
kahit maging ex-girlfriend
mo or ex-niligawan mo siya ,
you want to make sure
that you are good friends
with them. Wag ka maging
paasa, where you flatter
the girl, ipapa-expect mo
siya, tapos hindi naman
talaga. That is so wrong on
so many levels.

Last hurrah
When a Woman has self-control, and then loses control,
but is still in control

I was standing by the bar, bobbing

my head to the music, doing that
awkward semi-dance everyone
does when theyre still too sober.
Last hurrah! cheered my best
friend Kat, as she kept pushing
drinks my way. She was the brains
behind this bachelorette island
getaway, a celebration of my last
couple of months as a free woman
before getting hitched to Rob.
The music got louder, the bar
got fuller, and I got drunker.
Beside me was my co-worker,
Jacob, who also happened to
be in Boracay for a kite-surfing
competition. As the night wore on
and the drinks kept coming, my
head bob turned into a full-on floor
show, my ass grinding against
Jacobs crotch. It gratified me to
feel his bulge straining against his
board shorts.
How you doin back there?
I asked him over my shoulder,
a smirk on my lips. He grabbed
my hips, ramming me against his
groin.
You know exactly what youre doing to me, he growled into my ear.
Kat made her way to Jacob, a shot in one hand, a plate of salt and
lime in the other. Lets see those abs that Ciara wont shut up about!
she told him. She was too drunk to edit herself. I was too buzzed to care.
Jacob gamely took his shirt off, his body glistening with sweat.
Kat hooted, clearly impressed, before rubbing salt on his six-pack and
thrusting the shot glass at me. What happens in Boracay she began. I
hesitated, my fiances face flashing through my mind.
Come on, C, said Jacob, pulling me closer.
Last hurrah! urged Kat.
I hesitated for a few seconds, before steeling myself and muttering,
Fuck it. I placed my hands on Jacobs hips and slowly traced my tongue
down his abs, tasting salt and sweat, the image of Rob fading away.
Kat cheered me on as I downed my shot and handed me a lime
wedge. My work here is done, she declared with a flourish, before
heading back behind the bar.
Wordlessly, Jacob took my hand and led me through the crowd and
out of the bar. My room? he asked. I stopped in my tracks, drunk and
confused and holding on to the last bit of willpower.
Last hurrah, he said, repeating Kats words. Come on C, weve
wanted this for months. I know wed be so good together.
Maybe all this was just cold feet. Jacob had been after me for about
34 FH M JULY 2016

a year, ever since we started working

in the same department. He was
always asking me out for coffee, but I
always kept him at arms length.
But when the wedding planning
started getting crazy, I found him to
be an excellent distraction. We were
stationed a few cubicles away from
each other, but we would be chatting
on our laptops all day long. I loved
the kilig. I loved the electricity I felt
running between us whenever we
were in the same room. I loved the
attention; it scared me to think that
this was the last bit of attention I
would ever get from another man.
Its funny how so many girls want
forever, but the prospect of itof
being with one guy foreverwas
freaking me out.
Its not that I didnt love Rob. But
after being together for years, he
didnt exactly lavish attention on me.
When people asked me if he was The
One, I would automatically answer, Of
course! But in the back of my mind, a
tiny voice would always whisper, Is he?
As I was turning all this over
in my cloudy head, I felt my phone
vibrate in my pocket. Hey hon. Hope
youre having a good time. Love you.
Goodnight.
C? Jacob squeezed my hand. I
glanced up at him from my phone, and
he could see the look on my face. He
furrowed his brow, and I could feel the
heat between us ebb.
He sighed heavily. You know
what? Lets not, he said. I started to
protest weakly, but he cut me off. I know you. Youre just going to feel
guilty about this.
He walked back into the bar.

Two years later, Im lying in bed beside Jacob. I smile appreciatively

chaste a word for it. Besides, were not in love.
My phone vibrates on the nightstand.
Hey hon. Ill be home late. Dont wait up.
I put my phone down and go back under the covers. I wrap my hand
around Jacobs cock and slowly massage it. He opens his eyes and gives
me a sleepy smile, as I feel him harden in my hand. He was right about
one thing:
We are so good together.
But he was wrong about another: I feel absolutely no guilt.

SantoS iS about to Start a Show

Do this: grab a dictionary and look for the word

diva.

Diva, n.
refers to a famous and successful woman who
is very attractive and fashionable
Yes, we got that definition from Merriam-Webster.
But as with all semantic changes, the word has evolved
to also refer to singer-celebrities infamous for their
prima donna attitude. Demanding. Two-faced. Hindi
ma-reach. You know, pa-diva . And we hate people like
that.
But singer-songwriter Aicelle Santos breaks the
very essence of that wrong connotation. Sure, Aicelle
has had her fair share of diva moments, starting
her career in show business by winning a singing
competition and making it to the top noontime shows
as a resident songstress.
But today, shes able to show another side of her as
Eat Bulaga!s Traffic Diva. That stint had me running in
the streets and coming up to strangers, shares Aicelle.
Getting that job came with a lot of surprises. I didnt

expect to do impromptu sing-alongs with pedestrians

and people on the road. The spontaneity of it all is
unforgettable. Was it difficult to do? Aicelle says,
Not really. Every Pinoy loves karaoke! She had no
glamorous get-up, no teleprompters, no rehearsals. It
was all raw, and it was all fun. We like that.
Aicelle also dabbles in theater acting. Right now,
shes back in the comic musical Rak of Aegis as Eileen,
a character who, she says, doesnt require much effort
for her to portray. Eileen is just Aicelle, too. Whatever
perkiness you see onstage when I do Rak , its me, she
shares.
Right now you may assume that this girl can put
on any hat thats asked of her. But Aicelle admits she
still gets the jitters. I still get stage fright, of course.
Siguro mas magaling na lang ako mag-handle ngayon,
she says. Aicelle recently went through surgery on her
inflamed vocal chords after doing over a hundred live
shows for Rak . That was really tough for me. I was
not able to sing nor speak. Not even a whisper! says
Aicelle. But now that Im healed, Ive discovered a
different passion and respect for what I do. It only gets
better from here. Im back and am ready to rak !

last month to begin Gilas Pilipinas
training camp for the FIBA Olympic
Qualifying Tournament, Thomas
Anthony Tab Baldwin was in a
familiar place: a basketball court.
Instead of the usual last-minute packing
of bags, he was on a basketball court
attending a coaching clinic for kids.
This man obviously loves basketball.
And as fate would have it, Baldwin
found himself in a country that lives
and breathes basketball.
It is this same man who will be
leading Gilas Pilipinas bid to achieve
what basketball-loving Filipino fans
have long been waiting for: seeing the
national team play in the Olympics.
The 58-year-old Baldwins
basketball-coaching resum began
long before he landed a job in the
Philippines. An American with a New
Zealand lineage, Baldwin coached one
of the local ball clubs in New Zealand,
the Hawkes Bay Hawks. He went
on to be the head coach of the New
Zealand mens national basketball
team, the Tall Blacks. The rest of the
world began to notice Baldwin when
New Zealand made it to the 2002 FIBA
World Championship.
After several stints with the
Lebanon and Jordan national squads,
Baldwin was hired as a consultant for
Gilas Pilipinas for their bid in the 2013
FIBA Asia Championship in Manila.
The national squad finished second to
book a seat at the 2014 FIBA World
Cup, the first time the Philippines
played in the prestigious tournament
since 1978.
Baldwin has since settled in the
Philippines after being named head
coach of Gilas Pilipinas in 2015. It was
the same year when Gilas took second
place in the FIBA Asia Championship
after bowing to China in the finals. On
the side, Baldwin is also a consultant
for Talk N Text in the PBA, and the
head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles
in the UAAP.
Ultimately, however, Filipinos
understand that Baldwin came over
for one main task: to break the
drought. Despite the countrys passion
for basketball, the Philippines has yet
to qualify for the Olympics since 1972.
This month, the Philippines will try
to book a ticket to Rio as the beloved
Gilas Pilipinas competes in the FIBA
Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Its crunch time. How much work do

you still need to do in terms of Gilas
traning?
Theres still a lot of work to be done
because of the tight timeframe, not
only for [Gilas], but also for the other
teams. Most of the pro leagues in
Europe [finished] early June. Which
makes the preparation time for all
teams very short. Coaches want to
get training camps and competitive
games. But because [time] was so
condensed, it was sort of difficult.
Butch (Antonio, Gilas team manager)
did a great job [getting us into]
this camp in Greece. We are very
fortunate. We played Iran based on the
relationship I have with their coach.

If you could have your own way, how

much more time would you spend in
preparation?
If Gilas could be together for another
month or two, Im sure we would be
better. But it is what it is and we are
making the best of it. We are all very
focused on being successful. There is
only one thing that means success in
this tournament, and its winning it,
getting the gold, and going to Rio.
We could fail but still play really well.
I dont think we can succeed, while
not playing well. We have to play way
above our heads to succeed but that
is not outside the realm of possibility.
And thats what we really have to
strive to do.

Were you aware of the passion

Filipinos have for basketball even
before coming here?
I knew from anecdotal evidence that
the Philippines has always been a
basketball country. But I didnt know
how that would manifest itself until
I saw the big crowds. I didnt know
there are modern stadiums like the
MOA Arena, the Philippine Arena, and
even Araneta Coliseum, which is an
old stadium but still a big, nice one.
In what circumstances did you accept
the offer to become the head coach of
Gilas Pilipinas?
There was a part of me that was excited
because I had grown to understand
the Philippine basketball landscape;
how popular it is and how people have
a huge passion for the national team.
I recognize that there are pitfalls and
political issues but the thing that made
me secure with the position is because
of boss MVP [Manny V. Pangilinan]
and his passion for the game and the
support that he gives to the game.
Within that framework, I was excited,
yet I knew the challenge would be great.
How much different is it coaching the
Ateneo team from coaching Gilas?
Its dramatically different. [With the Blue
Eagles], there is a lot more teaching;
you have to spend a lot of time in detail
which can be tiring. Its intensive work,
but I enjoy it. I know what the fans
want and it is to win the championships.
But my job as coach of Ateneo is to
develop players and to help them reach
their goals and their aspirations. I
believe that if you do that well, things
like championships will take care of
themselves. Thats my philosophy.
How would you describe your
athletic career?
I really was a guy that was into a lot
of sportsI played a lot of recreational
softball, volleyball, golf, ping pong,
tennis, I enjoyed water sports, I swam
a little bit. I still play golf. But really,
basketball was my competitive sport.
And I had dreams when I was a kid
like most kids do, but those dreams
www.fhm.com.ph

took me [only] as far as high school.

During high school, my dad was a
basketball coach and he was pretty
adamant that I have no playing future
in the sport. [I was] too short, too slow.
He strongly encouraged me to pursue
academic university experience. I went
to University of Notre Dame, played
intramural basketball and football, but
that isnt exactly an athletic career.
Was your dad the one who inspired
you to take up coaching instead?
My dad was a lot of things. He was
my inspiration, my idol, my nemesis
at times in terms of me wanting to do
things I wanted to do. He is such a
strong disciplinarian and throughout
my youth, he was a powerful influence
in my life; he dictated the decisions I
made. My dads word was law. But he
did what he thought was best for me. I
never doubted his love. Up until I was
probably 25 years old, I followed what
he said. The first real break from my
dad was getting into coaching, which I
did aspire to partly because of him; but
I did it against his wishes. There was
a real fight over that in the house, but
in the end, he supported me. Without
his support, I dont think I could have
been as successful as Ive been.
We hear you are a big baseball fan,
as well.
No, Im a diehard [Boston] Red Sox fan.
My passion for the Red Sox goes back to
my early childhood. I couldnt tell you
Coach Tab on taking Gilas to Rio: I hope
that we do the job representing [the

way that why will be proud of us...

why I was a Red Sox fan [if I wanted

to]. Maybe because Im a [Boston] Celtics
fan as well. [The Red Sox] is the only
sporting thing in the world other than
the one I coach that I can refer to as we
because I feel such affinity for that team.
You obviously have a packed
schedule. But have you found time to
go around the Philippines?
Not nearly enough. Its something
that I definitely want to do more with
my family. I want to tell my friends
all around the world [about] the neat
things that we are going to see in
the Philippines. Being a person that
loves beaches, Im used to hot weather.
Growing up in that environment in
Florida, this [climate] is excellent
for me. Its just that I dont get the
opportunity to get out of Manila and
see all the places. But my wife and
I are looking forward to spending
a lot of time on beaches all over the
Philippines. I like Baler because of the
waves, and because I like to surf. Baler
is more like the home where I come
from. Anywhere you can go where you
can relax in warm weather and warm
waterand swimthats paradise.
How do you like Filipino food?
Food is very good. Southeast Asian food
is generally good. Thai food is one of my
favorite cuisines. But Filipino food [is
also good] because its spicy, and there
is a lot of meat. Some of the vegetables,
I find interesting, but the fruits are
amazing. Thats something about our
family: we love fruits.
What would you say to Filipino
basketball fans?
I hope that we thrill them and entertain
them. I hope that we give them a reason
to smile particularly the morning of
July 11th. More important than that, I
hope that we do the job of representing
them the way they want us toIf we
can achieve that, irrespective of our
results, then I think we could hold our
heads up. I guess thats the dream. To
know that the people supporting you
continue to believe in you because of

Like one of the pivotal scenes in
her lesbian-comes-of-age soap, The

Jade becomes infatuated and falls
for the mestiza and doe-eyed Althea

her newfound desires for someone on

The scene: inside the restroom

Althea washing up and checking
her face in the mirror. Jade is forced
to wait and confront her hesitation,
unwilling to unchain her emotions
and yet yearning to engage by
simply opening her bathroom stall.
Everything could change; nothing

The conflict, the emotions that

I agree that vulnerability is a

that, hey look she took our advice and
did, like, a gazillion squats. I had a kind
of epiphany after those reactions: you
know what? It really doesnt matter what
anyones opinion of your body is. Its
really up to you what you want to look
like and whatever that is, it's okay.

Incidentally, she also said yes because

FHM has transformed its design and
content ethos. I finally said yes because
of the change of audience and the
change in content, she says. Because of
that I now dont feel shy to put my body
in a magazine that is read by, what I
would say, the kind of readers that I now
want to reach out to.
Who owns womens bodies? For
Rhian, taking ownership of her body has
obviously been empowering, the right
track for evolution. In 2013 she got a
tattoo from the famous Kalinga tattoo
artist Fang-Od, using the traditional
batok method with pomelo tree thorn
and bamboo; extremely painful with
ecstatic bursts in between is how those
whove gone through the process
describe it.
In my industry its very normal
for people to nitpick on the smallest
physical flaws like, say, Megan Foxs
tongue, when shes super hot! Who gives
a crap?, Rhian says, shaking her head.
When youre young you tend to listen
more to the people around you with
regard to your body. Now that Im older
Ive started to just listen to myself. For
the longest time people had so many
opinions about my body and I would
read that, and they would affect me
deeply. They made me feel like I would
never want to be in front of anyone
anymore.
In Ifugao culture, girls would
ritually receive tattoos as they entered
womanhood, while men would get new
ones as they piled on achievements. The
Scorpion and the Hawk, the animals that
now adorn Rhians right upper thigh
are now her symbols of womanhood, the
sigils of her feral nature leashed and
ready to be tapped when needed. They are
a means of control, tools for argument
and negotiation with the world.
Ive realized that, even if you follow
somebody elses advice on what you
should look like, then youll have to
look in the mirror every day and be sad
because everyone else wins and you lose.

Rhian Denise Ramos Howell was born

of a British regional manager for an
American company, Gareth Howell, and
Filipina Clara Ramos.
We first saw her in 2006s Captain
Barbell as a teenage hottie, the apple
of Tengs eye. Since then shes done
everything from showbiz news to soaps
and horror movies. Shes grown up in
front of our eyes on sprawling celluloid
or TV; become an entrepreneur with
her friends (craft beer Pedro); took
up fashion design and made a name
for herself as a fashion blogista on
Skilleto (see http://skilleto.com/author/
whianwamos) or, what the kids these
days term an influencer.
R is for Rhian and the calculated
risks she takes. How far has she come?
Sometimes its measured in literally
stratospheric proportions. Recently she
parachuted out of a plane in Australia.
It was a tandem jump, to be sure, but
the experience did connect Rhian closer
to God. And the clouds.

It was one heck of a freefall, thats

for sure, she narrates. As we sat on
the edge of the plane I looked down
and I really choked, my mouth went
dry, and I didnt know if I could catch
my breath! Have you ever looked down
on 18,000 feet? You could cry but you
dont have saliva or tears. Then your
guy pushes you off the edge and thats
that. So as we were falling I was like:
God, what does a cloud feel like? Rhian
makes a sound between a burp and a
whistle, illustrating a cloud hitting her
face. Oh, thats what. Thanks, God!
That was really beautiful.
Shes also really into cars and
driving them fast. Which is why she
just got sponsored by a petroleum
company because she did monthly
Mini-Cooper races. Last year she won
second place overall in the 1275 engine
category. Which is why this year Im
really gunning for first place.
Also why shes hosting a motoring
show called Full Throttle on the History
Channel alongside radio jock Sam YG,
where she claims she gets to unleash
her need for speed and exercise a fair
bit of the traditional racer activity of
trash talk.

Ive found that a nice way of trash

talking people is just to go near their
cars and be like ganda ng auto mo,
ah! It would be a shame if anything
happened to it. But Im actually quite
a scaredy cat when it comes to road
driving.
Recently she replaced Iya Villania
on GMAs food magazine show Taste
Buddies. The show offers up food
features and trips about the different
facets of Filipino modern life and
cuisine. But really, Rhian felt that she
wanted to be in the show because it
would mean all of my cheat days now
are for work! Also I get to hang out
with Solenn Heussaff, whos one of the
coolest people in Philippine showbiz.
But what shes really proud of is
bagging the lead role of Clara in the
TV remake of Sinungaling Mong Puso,
off the 1992 movie by Maryo J. De Los
Reyes, where Vilma Santos originally had
the same character that Rhian now plays.

I havent done an afternoon show

in a really really long while, she says,
since shes been on primetime evening
shows for a few years now. "This is the
first time in a really long while that
I can be in front of a mostly women
audience. This is the demographic that
loves the melodrama, the acting, and the
approach that needs to be over the top.
She continues: In the 1992 movie
Gabby Concepcion is Vilmas husband
and he doesnt really treat her well,
so she turns to someone younger for
comfort. Now that Im playing Vilmas
character I realize thats really far from
me in real life, I dont usually go for
people younger than me but in the story
Vilma turns to Aga because he treats
her right.

That soap opera should debut just as

this issue hits the stands.
R is for ravishing and how, as
Rhians gotten older and grasped
more of her sexuality in her capable,
confident hands, it has been our boon
and reward. I would definitely say Im
much more comfortable in my body
now, she explains. See, I dont like
the word feminist, I think its too
feminine. To be one is to want equality
but the term itself is a little too much in
favor of women.
As a corollary, let those who would
play with a reckless streak, with the
feral, and the ardently radical beware
the tooth and claw, the call to injury of
any who are drawn to the sensual and
dangerous. Remember Rhians ink and
their warning: the scorpion and the
hawk, they are of beauty crafted but are
made brutes with such weapons.
Relentlessly. We are left, then, to roll
our Rs in praise. FH M

ve always wanted to write about my depression

but have just never really figured out why people
would want to read my story. in a generation
with so many people wanting to express
themselves in different, new, and exciting ways,
what makes my story so special and worth
spending precious time on? can you believe i
go through these questions each time i start
writing something? no wonder i have anxiety.
ive always wondered how i could
differentiate myself from the flock of wattpad
writers and the copycats of Marcelo santos iii,
the king of cringe-worthy hugot memes, who
have sold their souls to the demons of hugot
and relatability in exchange for viral readership.
i know i didnt want to write in a mainstream
kind of way, masyado akong pretentious for
that shit. so i reflected on what i could do to be
somewhat relatable but still keep my pretentious
roots intact, and for some reason, i chose to get
depressed. i know what youre thinking, oh, a
depressed writer! How uhm, clich. exactly.
but only a few writersno, only a few people
can say that they chose their depression to
further their art! parang modern-day Van gogh!
i confided to a friend my depression and
this is what i got: its kind of comforting to
know that some people are more fucked up in
the head than i am. i was different. My way of
handling depression was different from his (and,
with my conceit, yours, too). i wasn't whiny. i
wasn't papansin. i wasn't inconsiderate. i didn't
tell people they were fucked up, when all they
needed to hear was "its okay." i always liked
to think that i was living life with a handicap
and that it was harder compared with other
peoples lives and that i handled things better.
i wanted to be better. it just made me feel that
my accomplishments were always a little more
awesome and my victories were well-deserved;
though looking back, i would probably call
myself tanga rather than fucked-up.
you cant really choose to have depression.
some people are born with the inclination to be
depressed, sadyang malas; develop depression
through traumatic experiences, minalas; and/
or just have different psychological issues that
manifest themselves through extended periods
of sadness, nagpapamalas. My psychiatrist
thinks im kind of a mix of them all. i wasnt
diagnosed with clinical depression till after i told
my parents about it after an emotional exchange
with them a couple of years ago. i was 21. i
can't really recall what it was about.

as you guys can probably tell, i love
romanticizing things that happen to me.
Forming insights and looking for new sources
of inspiration come naturally because i believe
that a writer makes the most out of the things
he/she experiences, more so than any other
profession, because he/she can make others
go through what he/she felt if they get to read
his/her work. and being the smartass, instead
of using this for positive personal growth, i used
it to justify wanting to experience stupid shit.

shit that left me empty inside. by empty, i mean

i used to think it would be best to kill myself on

the next day. because, really, who wants to
work on a Friday? theyll have a weekend
to set up a really cool funeral for me. also, it
would probably be because of od-ing on some
illegal substance that wouldnt really affect the
way i looked on the outside so people would
get to remember me as my semi-gwapo self.

i nearly fell down the stairs. Most depressed
people dont really want to die; they just want

never really quite understood what i was going

depression in mainstream media are still a taboo
topic even though it shouldnt be. its already
recognized as an actual illness and not a pagiinarte as some people would put it.

i finally learned how to handle these things
when i met this girl on tinder (because that's
the app that guys who got all the game install);
one of the few people i actually liked talking to.
she also had baggage of her own. she had just
broken up with her boyfriend and i was sort of the
rebound guy. i had a lot of fun with her but i never
really saw it going anywhere. i tried remaining
friends with her even after i broke off whatever we
had because i felt bad leaving her. i tried to help
her but i only made things worse, so i let go.
i wanted to get better because i want to
help other people. i dont mean to sound selfless
because im not; i just felt like it was too late to
save myself, again romanticizing this shit. i'd
feel guilty whenever i fail to help people, like
there was something wrong with me. like i was
never enough. i realized i couldnt help everyone
(hell, i couldnt even help myself at that point).
i realized that sometimes, even if you do love
someone with all your heart, sometimes they
need a kind of love you cant offer.
eventually i figured out that, surprisingly
enough, forcing myself to become depressed
was a horrible, horrible idea. For one thing, the

suffered. i didnt get published more, i didnt
want to write anytHing. i became part of
FHM, probably one of the most fun places you
could ever hope to produce content for, and yet
i still felt so empty. not because my life sucked,
which didnt, but because i viewed the world to
be a horrible place to live in.
i made the world shitty because i believed
it was shitty even though it wasnt. i like
complicating shit for myself to make it feel like
im doing more work than other people. i like
carrying other peoples burdens for them even
when i know that ill fail because i like looking
strong in front enough to stand even if other
people were bringing me down. gusto kong

to suffer in a grander way so that people would
notice my suffering and not anyone elses. i
wanted to be read because people dont notice
it when other people suffer.
but this wasnt the way to do it.
i still get depressed sometimes. the anxiety
comes and goes along with self-destructive
tendencies, but im trying. ayoko nang
kinakawawa ako. i want to be good for other
people. i want to write my story well. i want
people to notice because i want to let people
read about what ive gone through. sayang eh.
i started writing again better than i could
have even hoped before. i do things that were
impossible before. i work out, i wake up early,
sometimes i even make it on time to work. i talk
to my parents more, i fell in love with an amazing
girl named kat (not through tinder), and i want
to be good for her. she makes me want to love
people more, even the annoying ones like myself.
i think im better now. FH M

That is Paul Bitengs ringback tone. The kid is

alright, but hes got a sick sense of humor. For
a while there, we thought it was real. The kid
having done what he did, wed have believed
every word of the stupid ringback.
In April, Paul Biteng, 20, was on national
news when he was arrested for hacking
the Comelec website. Hacked government
websites are not new, but Pauls timing was
impeccable: he did it with a little more than
a month to go before the 2016 presidential
elections, just as the Comelec was at a
critical juncture preparing for the automated
polls. The government agency said their
system was secure; not long after, data on 55
million votersincluding passport details and
fingerprintswas leaked on the web. Some
news reports claimed it was the biggest
government-related data breach in history.
A 20-year-old did that, and that was
our story.
After almost a month of looking, FHM
tracked down Paul, now out on bail, through
a fellow hacker. Following a series of text
messages and a few phone calls (with the
first one pranking us good), he agreed to
meet in a mall somewhere in Manila.
At the meet-up point, it felt like a
Ludlum thriller. We were to rendezvous with
PhantomHacker Khalifa, responsible for the
biggest government security data breach in

history. Fifteen minutes of standing around

in the mall, three security guards had placed
themselves at strategic points with direct
lines of sight to us, them communicating on
their radios. Our photographer was carrying a
backpack; we figured they thought we looked
suspicious. Maybe we were.
Then Paul arrived.
He was sipping on Starbucks and had on
a V for Vendetta t-shirt. His hair was wiry and
he had plugs for earrings. He was lanky, about
55, and he had this silly grin on his face.
He didnt look like he had graduated from
high school yet. He was with a girlnot his
girlfriend, he saidwho looked even younger.
Kanina pa kayo? Sinamahan ko lang kasi
siya, may binili lang, Paul said apologetically.
We agreed to do the interview at a bar two
streets down from the mall. We asked him if
he was allowed in the place; the girl knew the
place and said he could go in, besides he had
his ID with him.
Suddenly, it didnt feel like Ludlum anymore.
It felt like we were going to play DotA.

help of family, friends, and fellow hackers,

Paul says.
He recalls he was outside their house,
smoking a cigarette, when the NBI picked him
up. It had only been a couple of weeks since
he graduated from Perpetual Help College in
Manila.
By his account, Paul wasnt what you
would consider a master in the hacking
community, as the reports made him out to be.
Sa school kasi nanggaling yan. Hindi
naman sa masipagoo, masipag magbasa ng
codes, basta programming, interesado ako. So
madali ako makatapos ng mga activity, kaya
tinawag ako ng mga kaklase ko na master.
Pero sa [hacker community] hindi nila ako
tinatawag na ganyan.
It has been determined that although
Paul hacked the Comelec website, he didnt
leak the information on the webtwo other
hackers who got his codes in their community
forum did that. Sinasabi kasi nila [Comelec]
secured, so tinest ko kung mabubutasyun
ang term namin dun, butasin para makapasok.
May nakita ako, so nireport ko [sa Comelec].
Kaso hindi sila nagreply, Paul
says.
Here is how Paul may have
done it, from a geek perspective,
according to two IT experts
Pierre Tito Galla, a consulting ICT

www.fhm.com.ph

expert for various government institutions

like the Senate and Congress, the National
Telecommunications Commission, and the
Philippine National Police; and Marie Ricana,
who has held IT admin and director positions
at various government and private companies:
Biteng may have exploited an existing
vulnerability/set of vulnerabilities in the
website. Likely, the vulnerabilities existed
because the patching and security updates
of the website were not done faithfully, in a
timely manner, and with a sense of urgency,
Galla explains.
Ricana speculates Biteng did an SQL
injection via Voter's Registration Status
Verification/Precinct Finder. The reason
why I thought [he did it] through the Precinct
finder is because, 1) Using an open text
box form is an easy and careless way of
doing searches, especially if you dont take
the necessary precautions; 2) [The Precinct
finder] has a direct access to [Comelecs]
voters database (which is the database that
was actually stolen); and 3) Of all the services
in the Comelec website, it was the first to be
removed from the site.
This was a pretty easy job to do, too, say
Ricana and Galla. On a scale of 1 to 5 [on
the difficulty scale], its probably a 1, says
Galla. Scripts that do these things can be
copy-pasted from so many places, and they
aren't all in the dark web. Ricana agrees:
If indeed the hacking was done via SQL
injection, then that means what [Comelec] did
was lacking in terms of coding. With someone
who has the tech knowledge and malicious
intent, it would have been easy to do it.
So apparently, it doesnt take much to hack
Comelecs websiteit could have been done
by a local hacker who had just graduated from
school. Recina enumerates the necessary skills
to hack: The hackers need competencies in
the most common programming languages,
especially those that are used to program
websites and web apps (eg. PHP, MySQL,
JavaScript, Visual Basic). Competencies in
navigating web servers (which are more often
than not, run in Linux). Galli is more succinct:
They need the ability to search for reading
material on vulnerabilities, search for scripts,
and replicate them. In other words, Google and
cut and paste.

the game, then learned it well enough to know
how to customize the settings of the game on

willing to pay to be able to play. It sounds like
a technological leap for a kid, but Paul says
he had been into computers since he was
three. For him it was easy, and he showed his
aptitude for coding when he began college as
an IT student.
It was also in college that he found
hacking to be a cool thing. Gusto kong

he had begun to earn money spotting

Jail

Should we send him to prison?

De La Salle University law professor and
litigation lawyer Andre de Jesus, founding
partner at Esguerra Dy de Jesus Chico
Law says Paul broke two similar laws: the
E-Commerce Law or Republic Act 8792
(which regulates computer interaction in the
country) and the controversial Cybercrime
Prevention Act (which criminalizes several
online activities such as cybersquatting, libel,
and access to data without right).
[Biteng] can be prosecuted for different
counts based on different provisions of
each law, says Atty. de Jesus. He can be
prosecuted for hacking, for the fact that
he accessed the Comelec website without
right. He can also be prosecuted separately
for computer-related identity theft. This last
one means you intentionally acquire, use,
misuse, transfer, possess, alter, or delete the
identifying information of another without
right. I think these are the offenses that were
committed by Paul Biteng.
For all these violations, Biteng may be
slapped with fines and imprisonment. The
E-Commerce Act imposes a minimum
fine of P100,000 to a maximum amount
commensurate to the damage incurred, says
de Jesus. There is also imprisonment from a
minimum of six months to a maximum of three
years. For violating the Cybercrime Prevention
Act, Biteng may be imprisoned for at least
six years and imposed with a fine of at least
P200,000.
Theres more.
Biteng could also be charged with illegal
access against a critical infrastructure.
De Jesus explains: Critical infrastructure
[refers to] computer systems, programs,
traffic data so vital to our country that the
interference with, the destruction of, or the
tampering of these data or assets will have
a debilitating effect on national or economic
security, national public health and safety or a
combination of all those.
If prosecutors can prove that the Comelec
website is critical infrastructure, Biteng could
be imprisoned for 12 to 20 years and/or
slapped with a minimum fine of P500,000.

There is for the moment. No

moments when the beer in your

for that moment, and its an amazing
feeling. You wouldnt trade it for

A trip to Europe, where he was

introduced to a very wide range of
beer choices, piqued Lees interest
to add to the current beer selection
here in the country. In Europe, a
single pub can have 10 different taps
of different beers, says Lee.
Like many others, the Internet
was his takeoff point. The casual
online browse on the topicGoogle
and YouTubesnowballed to a
more extensive research about
beer styles, malts and hops, even
traditions. Next thing Lee knew,
he was buying ingredients and
equipment from a homebrew store
in Singapore.
Lee isnt shy in describing his
first brew in 2012 as awful. It was
so bad that I didnt let anyone drink
its, he says. Now, he is confident
enough with brewing techniques
that all he has to bear are the brief
spells of waiting.
While Lee isnt discounting
the possibility of getting in the
home-brewed beer business, he
has high regard for the craft. I dont
want to generalize, but some may
sacrifice creativity for the sake of
making sales. They think of what
would sell to the people rather than
what they really want to do. Home
brewing is all about making and
sharing beer, experimentation and
self-expression.

Before moving to the Philippines,

Mario had already dabbled in home
brewing in the US, hoping to make
beer on par with those from the
microbreweries and brewpubs he
frequentedonly cheaper. Actually
it wasnt any cheaper, but it was
more fun, Mario says. When he
decided to live in the Philippines,
Mario knew he had to start from
scratchlike going all-grainand
sometimes improvise with the
dearth of apparatus and supplies.
His background as a microbiologist
proved valuable.
With his experience and
aptitude in home brewing, Mario
could easily jump into the business
side of things and introduce his
beers to the consuming public, but
he chooses not to.
I consider my homebrew to
be the most expensive beer I can
drink, he says. Since it takes me
about eight to 10 hours during a
typical brew day, followed by a week
or two of manually controlling the
temperature of the fermentation
with frozen water bottles, then two
to four hours bottling or kegging my
beerthat is a lot of time that I have
to arrange with my busy and tiring
schedule. And that is why I feel my
beer is precious and should only be
given to those who will appreciate it.

facebook.com/FHM.ph

While he thinks there is no perfect

brew as the process is essentially
an art, Peppo believes consistency
can be achieved given that it is also
a science.
A balikbayan box from the US
in 2009 containing beer kits got
him started with craft brewing.
Peppo recalls: We brewed a pale
ale then, using liquid extract and
DME (dry malt extract). My brother
and I were so nervous the following
day when fermentation was at its
krusen (meaning), spitting out
beer foam all over the floor.
Being based in Iligan City, where
he says life is so simple that people
dont have the need nor want for
modern gastronomic indulgence,
was also a factor in his decision to
craft his own beer. I just wanted
to brew and share it to people and
friends here so that they will be
educated on craft beers.
Who wouldve thought a
birthday gift in 2008 from his Dutch
frienda beer deck explaining its
various categorieswould become a
source of fulfillment for Peppo every
time he makes a successful batch.
From that day on, brewing has
become a part of my life, maybe even
when I become old and cannot drink
beer anymore, he says. Its an infinite
quest for knowledge, to brew beers
beyond perfection and to innovate
and create other possibilities that
have never been explored before,
using all the ingredients imaginable.

The circular saw. One of the

advantages of a circular saw is
that you can control it to not cut
all the way through a piece of
wood. Norman used the circular
saw to make an indentation on
all five boards (bottom, top,
back, and two sides). He also
used the saw to make French
cleats for the medicine cabinet.

Clamp it right. Before drilling in the

pocket holes, make sure you clamp
the boards together securely. (Wood
glue might help keep the clamp keep
the panels in place.) The clamp, which
comes with the Kreg Pocket Screw Jig,
holds the wood down for more accurate
drilling of the pocket holes. (Work on a
sturdy surface to avoid accidents.)

The Kreg Pocket Screw Jig. Instead

of using nails or plain screws to join
pieces of wood together at a 90-degree
angle, Norman makes pocket holes
using the Kreg jig. It creates diagonal
holes on the wood. The pocket screws
you put through these holes end up
pulling together the boards youre
attaching.

The Forstner bit.

To make holes for
concealed door hinges,
many carpenters just
use a chisel, says
Norman. But these
make ugly, messy
holes. Instead, after
making the necessary
measurements on your
wood, attach a Forstner
bit to your favorite
power drill. It will create
a flat-bottomed round
crevice neatly, for your
concealed hinge to
fit in.
Remember to
wear safety goggles
when drilling with
the Forstner bit, as it
sends wood bits, not
sawdust, flying.

STEP 1: Gather what

youll need: five panels
of plyboard, 17 inches
tall and 11 inches
wide. For four of the
panels (top, bottom, and
two sides), use plyboard
with -inch thickness.
For the back panel, use
plyboard with -inch
thickness.
STEP 2: Using the
circular saw, cut a
groove lengthwise on
the top, bottom, and side
panels. Cut the grooves
of an inch from the
edge, inch wide and
inch deep. These
grooves are where you
will insert the back panel.

facebook.com/FHM.ph

twitter.com/fhmphil

STEP 3: Using the Kreg

Pocket Screw Jig, make
pocket holes on the side
panels to join these to
the bottom, back, and top
panels. This completes
the basic box of your
cabinet.
STEP 4: To add doors:
Use a Forstner bit to
make the crevice for the
concealed hinges. Install
the hinges.
STEP 5A: To put in
a shelf: Use a Kreg
Shelf Pin Jig to make
equidistant holes on
the side panels where
the shelf pins will go in
a horizontal line. These
pins will hold up the
shelf.

STEP 5B: To turn it

into a side table: Screw
store-bought legs
(leggz.com, tableLegs.
com, ikea.com) under
the bottom panel. To
turn it into a hanging
medicine cabinet:
STEP 6: Using the
circular saw, make a pair
of French cleats, cutting
them at a 45-degree
angle. Screw one on the
wall where you plan to
hang the cabinet. Screw
the other one on the
back of the back panel
of the cabinet. They will
work like hooks, except
theyre stronger and
more attractive.

new Innova carries the desire level
up several notches, and yet it still
retains its public appeal. we are very
interested to know how the sales of

LE B R O N IS LE GE ND
A vitriol-free account of how one of the most reviled player on the planet
made me a respectful fan
WORDS ALLAN A. MADRILEJOS

Make no mistake: Lebron Jamesunanimous Finals

MVP, undisputed best player on the planet, newly
minted three-time NBA Champ, guaranted to eat for
free in all Cleveland restaurants for the rest of his
lifestill has a losing Finals record (3-4) in his 13-year
professional career.
Bill Russell still has more championships than him with 11.
Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Robert Horry still have more
championships than him with six. Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant,
Derek Fisher still have more championships than him with five.
Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobli still
have more championships than him with four.
You'd be crazy to grant him entry into this esteemed cirle of the
NBA's ultimate winners, right?
How can that be even acceptable when, by your estimation,
Lebron James still isnt legendary enough? Still not clutch enough
to deliver a performance for the ages
while battling severe flu? Still not
ballsy enough to hobble into court
unassisted to shoot two free throws
mere minutes after tearing his right
Achilles tendon.
Im almost sure youre ready to
submit this admittedly hilarious meme
as photographic evidence of his lack
of fight and weakness of will.

132 FH M MARCH 2016

facebook.com/FHM.ph

Enough.
Mocking Lebron James just because you revel in seeing him
failor bought into the brand of basketball those fun, freewheeling,
universally adored yet, as it turned out, reckless Golden State
Warriors have displayed the last few yearsjust wont cut it anymore.
Imagine how unwitting and shallow youd look. Think about
your stature as a heckler for a minute. It has been said that to be
a key member of the venerated heckling community, one must be
knowledgeable and armed with only the most salient of facts at all
times. To be a heckler, in short, means to be an educated fan.
Love him or hate him, Lebron James, the prodigal native son
and curse assassin, reminded us of what it takes to stay true to
our calling as hardcore hoops fans. Accept it and youll realize that,
despite his massive display of ego and questionable behavior in
the past and reputation as coach-killer, Lebron James has been a
legend all along.
An icon long before LeBlock and his triple-double Game 7
masterpiece, a leader unafraid to tread the heartache-paved road to
success, a baller unflinching in his quest to break golden hearts, a
mythical hero to the millions of battle-hardened and loyal fans of a
sports city that suffered through and survived 52 years of defeat.
By now you should know his statistical achievements speak
only of his magnificence. Its expected of us ardent and intelligent
basketball fans to know them eventually by heart. Remember the
time when he cemented his legend right before our very eyes and
earned our respect while youre at it.
It will be tough to swallow, at first, trust me, a Laker supporter all
my life. But it willl get easier in time. FH M

As I went through your chosen 100, excited that you voted

in the current crop of new and young faces holding their place in
the celebrity universe, it occurred to me that when the list started
16 years ago (its as old as the magazine itself), we were as
thrilled to have come up with a stellar lineup of new and young
faces. But even then we were already looking into the future.
Who will replace these women when their time comes to take
the curtain call?
The future just happened.
This is the 2016 FHM 100 Sexiest List. To be sure, there are
still classic beauties here, and its safe to say theyll be staying
for a while. But the entry of the young and the new signals the
continuous redefinition of this list, and even now, as we think of
the next generation of cover stars who will soon take their place
here, we are sure this list will enjoy a long run.

MAR IA OZAWA

L A ST YE A R: 16
Have you ever noticed
how the Philippine
economy greatly
improved ever since Ms.
Ozawa set foot in the
country? As soon as
the actress opened her
own venture, the posh
Singles Bar in Resorts
World, stocks rose, oil
prices dipped, and there
was generally a positive
outlook, especially
among men in the
business sector. Call it
a triumphant return on
all the feelings weve
invested in her.

Yam banging, ahem,
away on her drumset
got us thinking: if you
could choose one girl
from a band of equally
hot members, which
one would you take?
Not Yam, because we
want her for ourselves.
Drummers are rareand
hot actress/musicians
like her even more so.

Whats perfect about
watching Aiko on
Banana Sundae is that
its the one sundae that
we can have as much

course, theres Aiko,

that it seems shes here
to stay, we cant be
happier for our menfolk.

for years now. Shes the

it her awesome chiseled
