Methods for development of Bond Strength

In general, there are three methods that are effective in developing good bond
strength and they are as follows
1. By chemical reaction (by heating)
2. By solvent evaporation
3. By cooling
1) By chemical reaction (by heating)
1. This method is generally employed for adhesives which are thermosetting by
nature
2. In this method, the low molecular weight pre polymers of adhesives are
converted by chemical reaction into high molecular weight three dimensional
polymers with high bond strength
2) By solvent evaporation
1. This method is used when adhesive to be used is dissolved in certain solvent
2. In this method the adhesive dissolved or dispersed in a solvent is applied on the
surfaces to be bonded
3. Then after the application of high temperature the solvent in which the adhesive
was dissolved gets evaporated and thereby jellying and hardening takes place
3) By cooling
1. This method is mainly used for thermoplastic adhesives
2. Thermoplastic adhesives when applied in molten state to the surfaces results into
good bond strength after assembling and solidification by cooling
