Latearrivalsandearlycheckoutsaredisruptivetostudentlearning.
Schoolbeginsat8:20a.m.andendsat3:35p.m.Pleasehaveyourchildhereontime.If
achildistardyhe/sheismissingvaluableclasstime.Weareengagedinacademic
instructionfrom8:25p.m.to3:35p.m.,everyday.
Studentsarrivingtoschoolafter8:20a.m.MUSTsignin,withaparent,intheMainOffice,and
willbeconsideredtardy.
Tardiesandexcessiveearlycheckoutsmayresultinlunchand/orafterschooldetentioninorderto
makeupmissedschoolworkandcanpreventstudentparticipationinextracurricular(nongraded)
schoolrelatedactivities(DisciplinaryConsequences*seebelow

).

ABSENCES
Excusedabsences,withproperdocumentation,include:
(1)Illnessorinjury:Whentheabsenceresultsfromillnessorinjurywhichpreventsthe
studentfrombeingphysicallyabletoattendschool.(2)Quarantine:Thelocalhealth
officerortheStateBoardofHealthorderstheisolationofthestudent.(3)Deathinthe
ImmediateFamily:Whentheabsenceresultsfromthedeathofamemberofthe
immediatefamilyofthestudent.Forthepurposeofthisregulation,theimmediatefamily
ofastudentincludes,butisnotnecessarilylimitedtograndparents,parents,brothers,and
sisters.(4)Medicalordentalappointment:Whentheabsenceresultsfromamedicalor
dentalappointmentofastudent.(5)CourtorAdministrativeProceedings:thestudentis
apartytoorundersubpoenaasawitnessintheproceedingsofacourtoradministrative
tribunal.(6)ReligiousObservance:Thestudentisabsentduetoareligiousobservancein
accordancewithlocalschoolBoardpolicy.(7)EducationalOpportunity:Whenitis
demonstratedthatthepurposeoftheabsenceistotakeadvantageofavalideducational
opportunity,suchastravel.Approvalforsuchanabsencemustbegrantedpriortothe
absence.Thiswouldinclude,butisnotlimitedto,astudentservingasalegislativepage
orgovernorspage.(8)LocalSchoolBoardPolicy:LEAsmayexcusetemporaryor
occasionalabsencesforotherreasonsinaccordancewithlocalschoolBoardpolicies,
providedthatthestudenthasbeeninattendanceforatleastonehalfofaschoolday
duringthecurrentschoolyear.(9)Absencerelatedtodeploymentactivities:Astudent
whoseparentorlegalguardianisanactivedutymemberoftheuniformedservicesand
hasbeencalledtodutyfor,isonleavefrom,orimmediatelyreturnedfromdeploymentto
acombatzoneorcombatsupportpostingforthepurposeofvisitingsaidparentorlegal

Absencesmayresultinlunchand/orafterschooldetentioninordertomakeupmissedschool
workandcanpreventstudentparticipationinextracurricular(nongraded)schoolrelated
activities( DisciplinaryConsequences*seebelow).
AttendanceLetterswillbesenthomeforallstudentswith3,6,and10UNEXCUSEDabsences
andforallstudentswith12ormoreTOTALabsences.

Afternotmorethan6UNEXCUSEDabsences,thePrincipaland/orSchoolSocialWorkerwill
notifyparents/guardiansbymailthattheymaybeinviolationoftheNCCompulsoryAttendance

Law,andmaybeprosecutediftheabsencecannotbejustifiedundertheestablishedattendance
policiesoftheNClawandtheOrangeCountyBoardofEducation.
Studentswith12ormoreTOTALabsenceswillbeREQUIREDtosupplyadoctorsnote.
StudentswithchronicattendanceproblemswillbereferredtotheAttendanceReviewCommittee,
whereanAttendanceConferencewillbescheduledwiththeparent/guardianandthestudentto
reviewthestudentsattendanceandacademicconcerns,andtoestablishanattendanceplanforthe
remainderoftheschoolyear.Chronicattendanceproblemsincludeexcessiveunexcused
tardiness,10ormoreunexcusedabsences,andexcessivetotal(excusedandunexcused)absences.
Lawenforcementmayberequestedtointervenewithexcessiveabsences.
Afternotmorethan10UNEXCUSEDabsences,theAttendanceReviewCommitteeshallconduct
areviewofthestudentsattendance,holdanAttendanceConferencewiththeparent/guardianand
student,anddeterminewhethertheparent/guardianhasmadegoodfaithefforttocomplywiththe
NCCompulsoryAttendanceLaw.Ifnot,theAttendanceReviewCommittee:
shallnotifytheDistrictAttorney
mayfileanundisciplinedjuvenilepetitionwiththeNCDepartmentofJuvenileJustice,
ShallfileaformalChildProtectiveServicesreferraltothelocalDepartmentofSocial
Services,
mayfileatruancypetitionwiththeMagistratesoffice,allegingthechildishabitually
absentfromschool.**TruancyCourtisa12monthlongintervention,andwillresultin
apendingcriminalchargeontheparent/guardiansrecord,untiltheparent/guardian
graduatesfromTruancyCourt.
DISCIPLINARYCONSEQUENCES
Studentswhohaveunexcusedtardies,excessiveunexcusedearlycheckouts,unexcusedabsences,
orexcessiveabsencesmayreceiveaDisciplinaryConsequence.DisciplinaryConsequencescan
include,butarenotlimitedtothefollowing:
Lunch/RecessDetention
AfterSchoolDetention
Restrictedparticipationinathleticevents,includingparticipationinsportspractices
and/orgames
Restrictedparticipationinnonacademic/gradedextracurricularschoolactivitiessuchas:
Schooldances
Schoolclubs
Schoolplays
Schoolfieldtrips
SportingEvents
Gradelevelevents
Olympics
