Degrees of Freedom

Almost every classical mechanical vibration textbook starts with the description of
motion of a simple one degree of freedom system. Vibration/Dynamic analysis of
complicated mechanical structures is built upon these concepts and hence it is
important to understand these fundamentals well. Thus, let us start by
understanding the concept of degrees of freedom.
Degrees of freedom are defined as the number of independent coordinates
needed to determine the position and orientation of a system, with respect to its
initial position. The number of independent coordinates is also the minimum
number of coordinates required.
Lets look at a few examples to understand this. We will start with the classical
example of a simple pendulum, which is a single degree of freedom system.

Now that we have learned the concept of DOFs, can we answer the following
question? How many DOFs does a body have in a three dimensional space?
