Canes top Nebraska in OT

The Associated Press

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Michael Badgley kicked a 28-yard field goal in overtime,
and Miami wasted a 23-point fourth-quarter
lead before beating Nebraska 36-33 on Saturday.
Corn Elder intercepted a pass from Nebraskas Tommy Armstrong at the goal line
on the first play of overtime, and the Cornhuskers added to their problems by having an
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty tacked on
the end of that play. That gave Miami the ball
at the Nebraska 13 to start their OT series,
and after three running plays Badgley came
on for the game-winner.
Brad Kaaya passed for 379 yards and two
touchdowns for Miami, which got 125 rushing yards and a score from Joe Yearby. Badgley kicked five field goals for the Hurricanes
(3-0).
Armstrong threw four TD passes, three of
them in the final 8:36 of regulation for Nebraska (1-2) rallying his team from a 33-10 deficit
after Miami had two safeties ejected for targeting.

No. 4 Michigan St. 35,

Air Force 21
EAST LANSING, Mich. Connor Cook
threw three touchdown passes in the first half
including one hauled in by Aaron Burbridge with a spectacular catch in the end
zone and Michigan State beat Air Force.
Cook ended up throwing for 247 yards and
four touchdowns, and Burbridge caught
eight passes for 156 yards and three TDs. The
highlight was Burbridges 28-yard scoring reception in the second quarter, when he
leaped to make the catch and, as his body
stretched parallel to the ground, touched his
left foot down in bounds.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Caleb Rowe
threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns in
his first start since 2013, and Maryland
notched a flawed victory over South Florida.
Despite throwing three interceptions, the
junior completed 21of 33 passes and provided
enough big plays to help the Terrapins (2-1)
finish with 411 yards in offense.

355 yards and three touchdowns as Indiana
held on for a victory over Western Kentucky.
Indiana (3-0) opened the season with three
wins in a row for the first time in five seasons
under head coach Kevin Wilson. The last
time the Hoosiers opened the season 3-0 was
2010.

Minnesota 10, Kent St. 7

MINNEAPOLIS Mitch Leidner and
Minnesota survived another shaky showing
by the offense, using a second quarter touchdown pass to K.J. Maye to eke out a victory
over Kent State.
Freshman cornerback Demetrius Monday
was the star of a feisty performance by the
Kent State defense, with two interceptions in
the first half and an 80-yard touchdown return
in the third quarter of a fumble he forced himself.

North Carolina 48,

Illinois 14

No. 23 Northwestern 19, Duke 10

DURHAM, N.C. Warren Long ran 55
yards for a touchdown and recovered a fumbled punt return late to help Northwestern
beat Duke.
Solomon Vault returned the opening kickoff of the second half 98 yards for the touchdown that put the Wildcats (3-0) ahead to stay.

No. 24 Wisconsin 28,

Troy 3
MADISON, Wis. Two-way player Tanner McEvoy had one of Wisconsins three
touchdown runs, and the Badgers wore down
Troy.
An odd game featured two Badgers defenders ejected for targeting, and a brief fourthquarter delay for an errant fire alarm.
The defense restored order by holding
Troy scoreless in the second half.

Michigan 28, UNLV 7

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Ty Isaac ran for a
career-high 114 yards, including a 76-yard
touchdown midway, to help Michigan top
UNLV.
The Wolverines (2-1) have won two straight
after opening with a loss at Utah under coach
Jim Harbaugh. They led the Rebels (0-3) by 21
points after Isaacs run midway through the
second quarter then didnt score again until

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Marquise Williams threw three touchdown passes and also
ran for 105 yards to help North Carolina beat
Illinois.
Williams led a big offensive performance
for the Tar Heels (2-1), who had plenty to feel
good about in a rout of a Power-Five nonconference opponent. The overhauled defense
continued its improved play by surrendering
just one touchdown through the first three
quarters, Ryan Switzer had two big punt returns after a frustrating drought and kicker
Nick Weiler hit two more field goals to stay
perfect on the season.

Virginia Tech 51,

Purdue 24
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Quarterback
Brenden Motley threw for two scores, ran for
another and nearly caught a touchdown pass
to help Virginia Tech get past Purdue.
The Hokies (2-1) have won two straight
since Motley replaced injured starter Michael Brewer, and coach Frank Beamer
broke a tie with Paul Bear Bryant for the
seventh most wins at one school in Football
Bowl Subdivision history. Beamer is now tied
with former Nevada coach Chris Ault at No. 6
with 233 wins.

win over the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets on Saturday.
Patrick Skov scored on
catches of 24 and 15 yards in
the final minute after the Yellow Jackets recovered an onside kick, but Notre Dames
Torii Hunter Jr. recovered a
second onside kick with 21
seconds left to clinch the victory.
Georgia Tech entered the
game averaging 67 points
and 457 yards rushing per
game, but struggled to get
much going until the final
minute. The Fighting Irish
held the Yellow Jackets to
216 yards rushing.
Notre Dame is 3-0 for the
third time in the past four
seasons. Georgia Tech (2-1)
fell to 0-11-1 against Notre
Dame teams ranked in the
top 10.

ATHENS, Ga. Greyson
Lambert answered his skeptics with a near-perfect performance, throwing for 330
yards, three touchdowns
and setting an NCAA record
by completing all but one of
his 25 passes to lead the Bulldogs past South Carolina.
Lambert posted the highest percentage (96.0) in FBS
history for a minimum of 20

mark of 95.8 (23 of 24)
shared by Tennessees Tee

BATON ROUGE, La.

The jarring impact of LSU
running back Leonard
Fournettes shoulder with
crumpling Auburn defensive back Blake Countess
blew the top off of sold-out
Tiger Stadium and
more than likely resonated
with Heisman Trophy voters.
And if that 40-yard
touchdown run wasnt eyecatching enough, Fournette added a 29-yard
score in which safety Tray
Matthews tried to tackle
the running back high,
only to be sent tumbling,
heels-over-head, toward
the sideline.
The 6-foot-1, 230-pound
Fournette finished that
play with a finesse move
that buckled the knees of
safety Nick Ruffin, and No.
13 LSU was well on its way
to a 45-21 victory over
18th-ranked Auburn on
Saturday.
Fournette finished with
a career-high 228 yards
and three TDs on 19 carries (an average of 12 yards
per carry).
Which run was Fournettes favorite?
No favorite run, he
said. I have favorite guys
and thats my (offensive)
line.
As for bowling over tacklers, he said simply, It was
fun. I did it in high school,
now its in college. The
crowd reacted wonderful.
Fournette was rested for
much of the second half
perhaps the only thing preventing him from breaking
Alley Broussards singlegame LSU rushing record
of 250 yards, set against
Mississippi in 2004.
The bottom line is we
got our rear kicked, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn
said. They did a good job
blocking and the kid
(Fournette) broke some
tackles, too, and made a
few big runs. But at the
same time, in the first half
the (Auburn) offense was
awful. They really didnt
give our defense any kind
of a spark or any kind of
hope.
Fournette has 387 yards

and six TDs through the

first two games of the season for LSU (2-0, 2-0 Southeastern
Conference),
which will go as far as its
stellar sophomore running
back can take it.
How far Auburn (2-1,
0-1) will fall in the national
rankings will be apparent
by Sunday. With its lopsided loss in Death Valley
coming one week after it
needed overtime to avoid
an upset by Jacksonville
State, odds are itll l be the
latest SEC squad to tumble
out of the AP Top 25.
Fournette wasnt the
only one gashing Auburn.
LSU finished with 411
yards rushing.
LSU still doesnt really
know how well it can pass
the ball. Quarterback
Brandon Harris, who was
9-for-14 for 71 yards in a victory at Mississippi State a
week earlier, was 12-of-17
for 74 yards and a touchdown against Auburn. The
dual-threat sophomore QB
rushed for 66 yards and
two TDS on eight carries.
Bandon Harris did exactly what we asked him to
do, LSU coach Les Miles
said. He managed the
game, managed the clock
He made plays with his
feet, made plays with his
arm, got us into the right
play. I enjoyed how he performed.
LSUs defense had a
pretty good day, too, intercepting Auburns Jeremy
Johnson once and sacking
him five times. Johnson
fumbled on a sack by defensive tackle Frank Herron, who also recovered at
the Auburn 5 to set up
Fournettes final TD, a
1-yard dive over the pile.
Davon Godchaux had two
sacks. Jamal Adams had
LSUs interception and
dropped a chance for another.
Auburn running back
Peyton Barber, who had
surpassed 100 yards in
each of his first two games
this season, was held to 34
yards on seven carries.
Asked about possible
switching QBs, Malzahn
said, We are going to evaluate everything at every position.

Buckeyes edge Huskies

Defense, continued from B3

the first two games.

The next question was:
What would happen if
Jones struggled? How
much patience would
Meyer have with his starter?
The answer appears to
be: Not all that much.
Jones misfired on his
first pass of the game and
appeared upset with receiver Jalin Marshall.
Jones next throw was too
high to an open Braxton
Miller and picked off by
Shawn Lurry, who returned it to the Buckeyes
22.
Three plays later Aregeros Turner swept around
right end for a touchdown
that made it 7-0.
Ezekiel Elliott fumbled
the ball away on a fourthand-short on Ohio States
next possession, but Eli
Apple intercepted right
back for the Buckeyes and
they turned it into a field
goal.
Lurry snagged another
pass from Jones, this time
one he was trying to
squeeze in between defenders when he had an
open receiver underneath,
in the second quarter. That
led to a Huskies field goal
and got Barrett warming
up on the sideline.

Barretts first possession was a three-and-out,

but on his second he connected with Michael Thomas on a 23-yeard touchdown pass to tie the game
at 10 with 8:21 left in the
second quarter.
Northern Illinois had
beaten the last three Big
Ten teams it has faced. The
Buckeyes were a big step
up from Iowa, Purdue and
Northwestern or at
least it seemed that way.
The defending MidAmerican
Conference
champion Huskies hung
tough with the defending
national champions, despite generating only 190
yards and 10 first downs.
Barrett started the second half and led a steady
drive that stalled in the red
zone, but Jack Willoughby
booted a 23-yard field goal
to give the Buckeyes their
first lead of the day at 13-10.
The Ohio State defense
finally took matters upon
themselves. Lee jumped a
quick pass to the sideline,
picked it off, stiff-armed
one Huskie and then ran
away from another he outweighs by about 60
pounds. The linebackers
touchdown made it 20-10
with 1:44 left in the third.
The nervous tension at
Ohio State was released
temporarily.
