WHY UNION? 1. A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE MIEU This pamphlet is distributed to you by officers of the Metal Industry Employees Union (MIEU) to give you some idea about our Unions aims ad objectives. MIEU was registered on 16th December, 1963 and today we have more than _________ members from ____ factories in the Metal Industries throughout the country. Our main objectives is TO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN FOR OUR MEMBERS JUST AND PROPER RATES OF REMUNERATION, SECURITY OF EMPLOYMENT AND REASONABLE HOURS AND CONDITIONS OF WORK, AND TO PROVIDE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE TO METALWORKERS. 2. HOW CAN THE MIEU HELP YOU? We are not here to promise you that your wages would be doubled and your bonus tripled etc. immediately after joining our Union. We are not here to suck your employer dry and give everything he owns to you. We are not here to ask you to become a member today and go on strike tomorrow. WE ARE HERE TO SHOW YOU THE BEST WAY TO GET A BETTER DEAL FROM THE EMPLOYERS LEGALLY AND THROUGH PEACEFUL NEGOTIATIONS. In order to enable us to help you, you must become a member of the MIEU. 3. HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER? You can become a member by filling in a membership application form which can be obtained from our HQ either in person or by post and sending it to us. 4. CAN YOUR EMPLOYER DISMISS YOU FOR JOINING THE MIEU This is the most common question asked by the workers approached by our Union for the first time. YOUR EMPLOYER CANNOT DISMISS YOU FOR BECOMING A MEMBER OF OUR UNION. It is illegal for your employer to practice any form of discrimination against Union members. 5. HOW WOULD YOUR EMPLOYER REACT? If your employer is reasonable and fair then hell not oppose the Union. Hell accept the information of a Union as part of the factory set up and extend his cooperation to the Union to establish good employer/ employee relations. If your employer is presently exploiting you by paying wages lower than he can easily afford then hell be anti-Union. Hell try to find ways and mean to undermine the Union. But you need not worry because out Government is opposed to such employers and the Ministry would take appropriate action against such employers.
6. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW?
We have tried our best to give you some idea about MIEU but to get more details and to get a clearer picture you should drop in at our Headquarters or at any of our area office close to you and have a discussion with our officers or you can write to us more details. NOW IT IS YOUR TURN TO DECIDE AS TO WHETHER YOU WANT TO HELP US TO HELP YOU. All over the world, Metalworkers are among the first to unite to defend their common interests. Economic and moral strength comes from unity. Ibu Pejabat: Rumah Pekerja- Pekerja Logam, 5, Lorong Utara Kechil, Seksyen 52, 46200 Petaling Jaya.
