RISK ASESSEMNET FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

NEWPAPER HEADQUARTER BUILDING

1- Excavation
Risks are:
Falling labour into excavation
Falling tracks
Potential
hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
How to control
Construct a barrier for trucks to near excavation
Construct a fence between outside and inside site to avoid
people intervention in to site.
Using a proper ladder for labours work in the site or inside
excavation

2- Diaphragm wall
Risk are:

Falling excavation sides

Steel reinforcement floating
Segregation of coarse aggregate into concrete and leakage
problem
Obstruct piling plant with adjacent building
Cutting services
Potential

hazard
Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Low Risk

How to control this risk:

2- Checking availability of service (such as electric cable, fibre optic
,water pipe and so on) by allocating services with service supplier .
3- Heavy steel reinforcement should be checked by design and placing
weights on the top of reinforcement.
4- Check confined space between existing building and allowable
distance for equipment.
5- Cement grouting for topping collapsing sides of excavations

3- Weakness in the propped pipes

Risks are:

Buckling pipes due to insufficient section for resisting

this force
Falling by excavator machine operation
Skewed alignment
Weak connections between parts of circular hollow
section
Impropriate in dismantling

Potential
hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
How to control:
Sections of propped pipe must be design to resist compression force
applied by pressures behind diaphragm wall
The coordinates of ends should be done by sophisticated and
accurate equipment such as Total station to avoid inclination of
propped pipes.
Size of excavator machine should be selected to be fitted with
distance between two propped pipes
Dismantling should be done after installing beams in two basement
levels with paying attention of method of dismantling.

4- Tower crane misusing

Risks are:

Failure in engine
Dropping materials
Crane failure due to overturning

Potential
hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
How to control risk:
Kept in efficient during working time and providing good
maintenance up to date
High skilled labour should monitor the lifting material
and double checking before commanding to crane
driver.
Structurally designing crane tower basement and its
lever.

5- Falling precast hollow core and precast cladding:

Insufficient connection between precast units and clits.

Large segment of concrete precast which may lead to fail
connection.
Low quality of precast units.
Deterioration of substance which is used between precast
units in expansion joints.
Risks are
1- Death of people around building
2- Effect on work consequence
3- Impact on elements in lower level in the case of collision

Potential
hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
How to control risk:
Provision of high degree of connection. This can be
satisfied by verification good design for bolts and clits
with external column and edge beams
Good quality of substance used in expansion joint
which can resist the variation of temperature
Precast units should be monitored in the factory to
check whether these precast units are suitable to be
transmitted to the site.
Work must be done by crane tower with rigorous
supervision.

6- Electrical equipment and lighting

Expose to environment condition such as a high humidity,

temperature and wind.
Ingress of liquid, moisture dust and solid objects
Using high power demand equipment with low electric
supplier.
Risk are:
1- Fire explosion in the building
2- Equipment damaged
3- death

Potential
hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
How to control:
Good supervision on electrical equipment, supplying all
electrical accessories to prevent misusing electric by different
equipment.

Power supply should be kept in areas far from weather

effects.
Power supply should be prohibited in new concrete elements
such as newly casted slabs which need curing by water.
Electrical sources should be prevented in areas that are used
for as a storage.

7- Weakness in connection
Caused by
- Careless of tightening bolts and splices
- Using different bolts strength grade
Risks are

Failure of part of building due to wide spans between columns

Collapse of floors
Death
Potential

hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
Control by:
High supervision on connection
Testing bolts for its strength in laboratory.

8- Opening and edges in all levels

Labour falls
Material falls

Potential
hazard
Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Low Risk
How to control:
Plan and organise work to keep people away from opening
area by providing guard wall or steel work.
Temporary flooring for opening area by scaffolds in order to
be accessible for labours.

9-Working with hazard materials in paint

Caused
-

by :
Cement plastering
Painting steel elements to avoid corrosion
Dust
Grouting substance
Asphalts for roof surfacing

Risks are:

Health problem for labours

Potential

hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
Controlled by:
Worker must follow the instruction of site manager by wearing
safety cloths which protect them from dangerous material
During excavation the site should bewattered to prevent blowing
dust.
Worker should be trained to treat with these substances.

10 Fire explosion
Risks are:

Steel structure is vulnerable to fire considerably effect by fire.

Labours may suffer from tough inhalation or causes death
Delaying project

Potential
hazard

Major
Hazard

Serious
Hazard

Slight
Hazard

Risk
High Risk
Medium Risk
Low Risk
Providing fire extinguisher in every level
workers must be trained how to use fire extinguisher
Extremely prohibiting fire holding in the site .this should be
satisfied by rigorous monitoring.
The water reservoir or water tanks should be installed on site and
contains a sufficient amount of water to coverage any fire
circumstance.
