AREA AND VOLUME EXERCISES

I.

INTEGRAL SET-UP. Set up, but do not integrate, the integral defined by the following problems.
Find the AREA defined by the following conditions:
The region R1 using
veritical strips.

The region R2 using

horizontal strips.

The region R3 using

vertical strips.

Find the VOLUME defined by the following conditions:

The region R1 about
the x axis using
veritical strips.
The region R2 about
the line x = 1 using
horizontal strips.
The region R3 about
the line y axis using
veritical strips.

II. PROBLEMS. Show all necessary computations. Also, provide an accurate graph of the functions/relations defined in each item. (You
may use graphing paper for your graphs)
1. Find the area of the region given the following conditions:
a. closed and bounded by the lines y = 3 , y = 1 , the y axis and the curve x = 8 + 2y y2.
b. closed and bounded by the curve y = x3 6x2 + 8x and the x axis.
c. closed and bounded by the curves y = x + 4 and y = x2 2. Show both solutions when representative
rectangles are (i) horizontal and (ii) vertical.
2. Find the volume of the solid closed and bounded by the curves y = 6 3x x2 and x + y 3 = 0 revolved about the
x axis. Take rectangles to be perpendicular to the axis of revolution,
3. Find the volume of the solid bounded by the parabola y = x2 + 4 and the line y = 8 about the line x = 4.
4. Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving about the x axis the curve y x 1 and the
lines x = 5 and the x axis. Show solutions when representative rectangles are (i) horizontal, and (ii) vertical.
