1. INTRODUCTION
Hyperhidrosis, the medical term for
excessive sweating, is a condition
estimated to affect up to 3% of the
american population.
Beyond physical irritation, there is
significant evidence that the condition can
result
in
occupational,
emotional,
psychological,
social,
and
physical
impairment leading to increased amount of
depression and other negative effects.

2. ABOUT HYPERHIDROSIS
Diagnosing Hyperhidrosis
There are some tools to determine
the severity of the problem:

HDSS scale
Gravimetric assessment
Starchiodine test
[3]
[2]

Current Therapies
Some of the common treatments for treating axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis
include prescription-strength antiperspirants, surgical procedures, and botulinum
toxin (Botox) injections.

3. POSSIBLE ENERGY MODALITIES

Laser-based

Photothermolysis

Low to mid RF
Monopolar
bipolar
Ultrasound

Modeling:
Physical Characteristics:

Four coaxially fed rectangular waveguides

open ended.
1-mm layer of deionized water and a
ceramic cooling plate to continuously cool
down the skin surface

Electromagnetic Properties of the 3 mediums:

Skin: r = 38.6, = 4.3

Fat: r = 5.0, =0.3;
Muscle: r = 49.5, = 5.4

[10] Simplified model of commercial applicator for

treating axillary hyperhidrosis.
9

Modeling Results:

[11] The absorption profile for hyperhidrosis device:

skin thickness = 1.75 mm and frequency = 5.8 GHz.

[12] The 1-D normalized SAR profiles through the

center of the waveguide antenna down into the tissue for
different skin thickness. The plot has been normalized
10
such that the skin/fat interface is in z=0.

Preclinical Testing and Clinical Trials:

[13] Gross pathology examination one month after treatment for tissue
treated at various energy levels in a porcine model: (a) untreated, (b)
599 J, (c) 630 J. The dark region (localized hematoma) approximates
the area affected by the energy

5. Commercial product and user

interface (Diana)

The product presented have a graphical

user interface that guides the doctor
sequentially through the procedure

It also includes a) Microwave generator with

user interface, b)Handpiece, c)BioTipo and
connection with generator.

[14]

Regulatory and Safety Requirements (Diana)

Approval from the Food and Drug Administration
For accepting a medical commercial product
there are three procedures: Class 1, Class 2,
Class 3, depending on the kind of product.
[15]

Creating a device with low stray radiation,

accurate
power
and
temperature
measurements were the parameters taken into
account for safe and efficacious results.

6. CONCLUSIONS

Noninvasive and lasting treatment methods is what technology is searching

for.

Dielectric contrast and standing wave effects in the skin layer gives
microwaves inherent advantages.

Although hyperhidrosis is not a life-threatening condition, its treatment can

give better life conditions.
