Sharmistha Mukherjee is an Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer and politician of the Indian

National Congress.

Born in West Bengal, Mukherjee grew up in Delhi. Her father is Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th and
current President of the Republic of India

Mukherjee began formal dance training at age 12.[2] Her teachers included Pandit Durgalal,
Vidushi Uma Sharma and Rajendra Gangani.[3] The Hindu called her performances
"accomplished" and lauded her precise footwork.

Sharmistha joined the INC in July 2014. Since then she has been actively participating in rallies
organized by the party and working at the grass root level with the party workers in her area.

She contested the Delhi Assembly election in February 2015 from the Greater
Kailash constituency[5] but lost, coming third with 6,102 votes after Saurabh Bharadwaj (AAP,
57,589 votes) and Rakesh Gullaiya (BJP, 43,006 votes)

Sharmistha belongs to a highly educated and respected political family in
India. Her grandfather Shri Kamadakinkar Mukherjee was a freedom fighter.
Her father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has been intimately associated with Indian
National Congress since last 40 years and is considered one of the tallest
figures in contemporary Indian politics. Her mother Suvra Mukherjee is a
singer and painter. Through her parents, Sharmistha naturally inherited the
great cultural traditions and pluralistic democratic political legacy of India.
Sharmistha is a woman with an independent spirit. Sharmistha has always
kept a low profile, keeping away from limelight; preferring the sublime world
of art more than turbulent world of politics. However, she recently joined

Sharmistha Mukherjee joined Indian National Congress in June 2014 and has
since then been actively participating in events organised by the party. She
strongly believes in the true ideology of liberalism, democracy and pluralism
of the founding fathers of Indian National Congress; and that politics is the
highest form of public service. The very fact that she has joined politics NOW,
rather than few years ago when things would have been more opportune for
her, shows that she is a woman with mission.
An activist fighting for gender equality, Sharmistha has been extremely vocal
about sharing her concerns through various means. She is a regular speaker
on seminars and conferences on gender issues, and has been involved in
many programs creating awareness on gender issues. She has done
innumerable fund raising programs as an artist and lend her support as an
activist for various causes including women and children.
A long-time resident of the constituency she represents, Greater Kailash, she
stress the importance of finding executable solutions to problems rather than
unattainable tall promises. She has a larger vision for the development of her
area and the community for which she is clear that all stakeholders must be
involved. Her firm belief in participatory way of functioning makes her take
the public along in the journey of development.

Alongside classical training, Sharmistha has developed a unique style of
performance. The style draws from her highly individualistic persona and is
natural, spontaneous and full of joyous abandon. Her forte lies in building an
immediate rapport with her audience and developing a connect.
Sharmistha is a keen choreographer and tries to incorporate innovative
techniques to her compositions. Her experiments with space and movement,
sounds of ankle bells, and music are an effort on her part to step beyond the
horizons of traditional Kathak. The themes of her productions have been wide
and eclectic. From Tagores poems to mythology, to the classical music of

Johann Sebastian Bach, from influence of nature to Sufi philosophy
