    The cell membrane is composed of a fluid mosaic of phospholipids and proteins that allows selective permeability. Receptors in the membrane can bind to antigens similar to antibodies. Membranes regulate what enters and exits the cell, provide attachment for intracellular structures, and allow cells to communicate through recognition molecules like receptors. Proteins embedded in the membrane transport molecules, act as receptors, and provide structure. The fluid mosaic structure of the membrane allows some molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through easily, while protecting the cell through selective permeability based on a molecule's structure and properties. Aquaporins are necessary in the cell membrane to transport water molecules across the membrane.
