on-track action
Jackson Motorplex
General Manager Doug
Johnson said some big

over four-time winner
Johnny Herrera.
All four are expected

Halverson hoping nationals provides major highlight

Underdog likes
his neon pink car
with odd number
by DAN CONDON
Sports Editor

In his own words, Brandon Halversons season

has produced nothing
spectacular so far.
But he hopes that
changes at this year s
Jackson Nationals.
The 360 sprint car driver has a pair of top-five
finishes at the Jackson
Motorplex and another
top-10 placing this summer and finished as runner-up once while racing a non-wing car in
Worthington.
A win during the nationals, though, would
make this season one to
remember for the driver
from Jackson.
Halverson plans to race
his 360 sprint car during
the Jackson Nationals, as

well as a non-wing sprint

car.
With any luck, we can
win one of those, he said.
Halverson said the first
step to doing so comes
from getting off to a good
start.
Qualifying really well
would be a good thing for
both classes, he said.
Always the underdog
Even if Halverson isnt
the favorite to win the
Jackson Nationals, thats
fine by him.
Hes always been
known as a bit of an underdog so much so he
named his racing team
Underdog Motorsports.
My mom always called
me the underdog because
we never had the nice
equipment or anything,
Halverson said. I just
kind of went with it.
Besides being an underdog, Halverson said he
doesnt mind being a bit of
an oddball.

HALVERSON: Underdog likes neon pink car and odd number

Continued from PAGE 4
He gave his car the No.
13, even though most shy
away from it.
I like the number, he
said. Not many people
do it for the superstition.
I like being the oddball.
But what comes after the
number is even more important to the fifth-year
sprint car driver.
The MJ in 13MJ is for
his daughter, Maryjane.
When she was born,
we put that on there, he
said. I like it.
If the number isnt
unique enough, Halversons paint scheme is.
His sprinter is black
and bright pink, making it
easy to spot on the track.
Ive kind of always
done pink, he said. We
just did a lot more this
year. Its different; nobody does it.
His freshly-painted car
took first place in a car
show at the beginning of
the season.
So we have won something, Halverson joked.

Love for racing

Halverson said he got
into racing after going
to races at the Jackson
Speedway now known
as the Jackson Motorplex.
I grew up watching
it and just liked it, he
said. I watched mostly in
Jackson. When I was old
enough to travel around
by myself, I started doing
that too.
Halverson started his
racing career 10 years
ago when he was 16, hopping behind the wheel of
a hobby stock car.
Five years later, he
started driving a sprint
car.
He said hed like to
drive a 410 sprint car in
the future, but for now,
likes sharing the track
with those guys.
The 410s around here
are as good as you can get
anywhere in the country,
Halverson said. Id like
to try it someday. As of
now, we have 360 stuff, so
thats what we do.

Name isnt only thing thats changed at Jackson Motorplex

Facility sees big

more to come in
the near future
by JUSTIN R. LESSMAN
Publisher

The name isnt the only

thing thats changed at the
Jackson Motorplex.
The historic half-mile
speedway formerly
known as the Jackson
Speedway opened for its
63rd season of racing in
May with a complete facility facelift, including
all-new bleacher seats,
new VIP suites, a brandnew concession area and
new digital video boards.
The schedule has also
changed this season, with
the newly renovated facility playing host to two
nights of edge-of-yourseat racing action each
week.
Huge improvements
Renovations and up-

dates to the motorplex

unveiled this season come
on the heels of improvements begun in 2015. That
year, the half-mile track
was widened to provide
more side-by-side racing
and all-new Musco lighting was added throughout
the facility.
This year saw the debut of all-new bleacher
seats with backs and 20
new VIP suites. Race fans
and businesses are able
to rent the climate-controlled suites high above
the speedway for the entire season or for a single
race night.
The view is spectacular, said Doug Johnson,
Jackson Motorplex general manager.
Race fans and teams
are also being treated
this season to a brandnew concession area with

Six new members enshrined in speedways hall of fame

The Jackson Speedway
Hall of Fame enshrined
six new members earlier
this year during a newly
formatted induction ceremony.
This years inductees
are James (Lucky) Jasper,
Brian Schnee, Don Reiners, Dave Engebretson,
Wayne Gohr and the Jackson Ambulance Service.
Inductees were honored May 20 at the Jackson Motorplex as part
of the Folken Brothers
Spring Nationals. The
induction ceremony took
place the following day
at the Jackson American
Legion Hall.
Jaspers Carmel Corn
becomes wildly popular
The name Jasper became synonymous with
the Jackson Speedway for
many reasons. His famous
Carmel Corn was popular
among fans and his motion as commander of the
local Veteran of Foreign
Wars Post No. 900 to pur-

chase an ambulance for

the city of Jackson led to
increased safety at the
racetrack.
When the VFW became
involved with managing
the track, Jasper was instrumental in purchasing popcorn from a local
vendors stand in Jackson
and then sold it at the concession stand at the track.
In the late 1950s, Jasper
invited some friends to
his house and they made
batch after batch of caramel corn, looking for the
perfect recipe. They made
several batches until the
recipe was just right, thus
creating Jaspers Carmel
Corn.
Jasper bought a popcorn trailer and parked
it under the grandstand,
selling his Carmel Corn,
peanuts and ice cream
sandwiches. During the
Jackson County Fair, they
added snow cones and
cotton candy. Jasper also
decided to sell beer at the
track as a way to raise

funds for the VFW. He

helped construct a building, acquired coolers and
managed the selling of
the beer.
Jasper employed many
young boys at his popcorn
stand, many of whom were
working their first job. If
there was a lot of product
left toward the last race
of the night, Jasper would
suggest a power outage to
the maintenance personnel in order to halt the
races. Most of the lights
would go out and people
headed to the concession
stands. Eventually the
outage was fixed and
races continued.
In the early days, if
track officials didnt generate enough money from
ticket sales, they used
money from the popcorn
stand to fulfill the winners purse.
In the late 1960s, during
his time as commander
of the local VFW, Jasper made the motion to

Jackson a special place
for Schnee
Schnee remembers going to the races in Madison, S.D., for the first time
in the early 1970s and
being hooked instantly.
I knew thats what I
wanted to do, Schnee
said in his HOF biography.
The Schnee family
moved to Sioux Falls, S.D.,
around 1977, where his
new neighbor, Pat Cambell, owned a six-cylinder
modified. Schnee hung
around Cambells house
for years and helped in
the garage. Cambell introduced Schnee to Marlo
and Marlon Jones and

Schnee soon became good

friends with Marlon. Marlon and Don Larson were
building a car, and Schnee
helped.
Around that time,
Schnee started hearing
people talk about the
Jackson Speedway. He
starting coming to the
speedway in 1978 and
said, from the first time
I ever saw Jackson, I
just fell in love with the
place.
Schnee credits that to
his eventual success at the
Jackson Speedway.
I think the reason we
were always pretty good
at Jackson once I started
racing there was because
I just love that track, he
said. Everyone treated
you so well and I love the
high-speed half-mile.
Schnee says he remembers Jack McCorkell lapping him when Schnee
first started racing in
Jackson and marveled as
he watched McCorkell fly
down the straightaway.
Schnee met Steve

Sharpe in 1985 and raced

his sprint car for two
years, winning University
of Okoboji Night a couple
times.
Sharpe sold all his stuff
after the 1986 season, so
Schnee turned his attention to starting his business of fixing cars and
building nerf bars and
bumpers. By 1990, he was
building cars for some
of the best racers in the
country.
Through the 1990s,
Schnee raced his own
car in Jackson and drove
for several other owners
at different times. He
retired from racing in
2001, but says the Jackson Speedway has always
been a special place.
Schnee said being able
to be part of the season
opener at the Jackson Motorplex earlier this year
was pretty special ahead
of his induction into the
hall of fame.
The whole thing has
really come full circle,
he said. Its quite an

honor to be in here.
Reiners wins Nationals,

Reiners has been
around racing nearly his
entire life. His dad, Don
Reiners Sr., raced motorcycles and, later, modified
cars at Husets Speedway
in Brandon, S.D.
The two started racing
together in 1969, teaming up with a supermodified car No. 6 and No. 26.
They raced at Husets and
Madison, S.D. until Reiners moved to Sturgis, S.D.,
where he raced his No.
26 sprint car at the Rapid
Speedway.
Reiners moved back to
Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1975
and built a supermodified
No. 23 with Darrell Dawley and Doug Clark. They
had great success with the
car for one year and then
Reiners drove the No. 7
sprint car for Don Larson.
In August 1977, Reiners teamed up with Loren
Rick, owner of the No. 54

sprint car. They spent the
winter months building
frames and parts and soon
started having success. In
1979 and 1980, Reiners
won track championships
at the Jackson Speedway
and Hartford Speedway
and he won the track title
at Harford again in 1981.
Reiners lists his biggest
triumph as winning the
1982 Jackson Nationals
in dramatic fashion on the
last lap.
His racing career ended
the next year when he received a severe back injury as the result of a sprint
car accident at the Jackson Speedway. After many
years of rehab, Reiners is
back in action driving and
racing his dirt bike and on
the golf course.
I am truly honored
to accept this, Reiners
said during the induction
ceremony back in May.
Its like family coming
here always. I am just
awestruck to be accepting this.

Second induction for

Engebretson
The 2016 induction into
the Jackson Speedway
Hall of Fame is the second
for Engebretson, who is
already a member of the
Husets Hall of Fame.
Engebretson began his
racing career in 1954 at
Husets Speedway, racing
in a 1937 Ford two-door
sedan he purchased for
$40. He won his first race
that summer in Mitchell,
S.D., and raced at Husets
and the old Soo Speedway
until the late 1950s.
In the early 1960s,
Engebretson drove a 1937
Ford coupe at the Jackson
Speedway and Minnesota
State Stock Car Association. He won the MSSCA
title, as well as the Jackson championship.
In 1964, Engebretson
drove a new car built
by Marlo and Jay Egge
and won four features
in a row and the season
championship at Husets.
That same year, he drove

a sprint car for the first

time, racing a cageless
Chevrolet owned by Hank
Hannestad. Engebretson
raced the sprint car Sunday afternoons and then
quickly headed to Husets
that night to race the Egge
car Sunday nights.
After the 1964 season,
the sprint car returned
to California, where Jan
Opperman got it for his
first chance at sprint car
racing.
Engebretson retired
from racing after the 1966
season, but returned in
1974 with a new supermodified. In 1977, Engebretson went to just driving sprint cars, racing in
Hartford, S.D.; Knoxville,
Iowa; and Rapid City. He
raced sprints and modifieds until 1981.
Spanning his racing career, Engebretson raced
in the first World of Outlaws event in Dallas and
won championships at
Husets, Jackson and MSSee HALL on PAGE 14

and MSSCA, the tri-state
championship for Minnesota, South Dakota and
Nebraska and won the B
dash at the Knoxville Nationals in 1977.
Engebretson has raced
in six Mint 400 Desert
Races, the Mexican 1000
and several snowmobile
races in the area.
Although not officially retired, Engebretson
has not raced since the
Masters Classic Races
at Knoxville in 1994 and
1995. He and his wife,
Nancy, live near Meckling, S.D.
Gohr always there to lend
a hand
Gohr was someone who
was always willing to lend
a helping hand, regardless of what needed to
be done at the Jackson
Speedway. He always
made sure everybody was
having a good time and
cheered those up when
they were down or had a
rough night.

Gohr started at the

Jackson Speedway helping Richard and Lynn
Mohlencamp in the late
1980s or early 1990s.
Through the years, Gohr
started helping Scott
Knudson, sticking with
Knudson from the hobby
stock years all the way
through the 305 sprint
cars. Even when Knudson
wasnt able to make the
races, Gohr was there.
Gohr started pushing
sprint cars to the starting area, sitting in turns
three and four to watch
the race. He worked in
various positions, including the back gate, and had
his dream job of corner
four the last years he was
at the track. Gohr loved
being that close to the
sprint cars as they went
racing by.
Gohr and his family
helped the cleaning crew
with post-race clean up
every week and Gohr
could then be found with

Family can still feel presence of hall of fame inductee at new motorplex
As Marlene Wolff approached the new and improved
Jackson Motorplex on opening night back in May, she
wasnt sure hed still be there.
Her brother, Wayne Gohr, who worked at the old
Jackson Speedway for the better part of two decades,
died suddenly in 2012 at the age of 47. But Wolff said
while Gohr was no longer around in body, his spirit never
really left the racetrack he so loved.
So she was uncertain ahead of the May 20 seasonopening race at the made-over Jackson Motorplex if
that old feeling would remain. It didnt take long for
her to realize it did.
The minute I stepped in there, I felt Waynes presence, Wolff told the crowd gathered for Gohrs induc-

tion into the Jackson Speedway Hall of Fame the afternoon of May 21. I felt it all the way around.
For Marlene Wolff, Gohrs sister, and other members
of Gohrs family on hand for the ceremony, Gohrs posthumous induction into the Jackson Speedway Hall of
Fame was a dream come true.
Gohr joined James (Lucky) Jasper, Brian Schnee, Don
Reiners, Dave Engebretson and the Jackson Ambulance
Service as 2016 inductees Saturday. The inductees
were also honored Friday at the Jackson Motorplex as
part of the Folken Brothers Spring Nationals.
We thank the hall of fame for welcoming Wayne into
the family, Wolff said.
