1) Two concrete testing labs, Lab A and Lab B, are testing two different batches of concrete.
Test results for 100 concrete cube samples from both the labs are provided in the file Lab Test
Results.xlsx which can be downloaded from Moodle.
a) From the test results, without calculating the characteristic strength, which batch of
concrete would you be more willing to adopt for construction?
b) For the batch of concrete you have chosen, calculate the characteristic strength.
2) Slabs supported by beams on all four sides are typically of two types: one way slabs and two
way slabs. If the length to width ratio ( ) is greater than 2, the slab acts as a one way slab
and the beams along the long spans are assumed to carry the load from the slab (Fig. 1a).
However, in two way slabs with

Consider the floor plan shown in Fig. 2 of a residential RC building where slabs S1, S2 and S3
and supported by beams B1 to B6.
a) Calculate the equivalent uniformly distributed and concentrated loads acting on the
beam B2.
b) Determine the design moment of beam B2 for the ultimate limit state.
[Assume:
Width and depth of all beams are 230mm and 500mm respectively]

3) The portal RC frame shown in Fig. 3 is loaded by:
Dead load (self weight) of 10 kN/m
Imposed live load of 30 kN/m
Wind load of 15 kN/m
Find the design compressive loads in both the columns for the following load combinations
a) Dead Load and Live Load
b) Dead Load and Wind Load
c) Dead Load, Live Load and Wind Load
