AVID 10 Syllabus

Course Description and Goals
The AVID class is designed to offer students who have been selected based on their work
ethics and desire to learn the necessary skill and work habits to enable them to perform
quality work and succeed at the college level. Tutorials and binder checks will be
completed as necessary.
There are many methods that will be employed in the classroom to assist students in
meeting their academic goals. Some topics and activities that will be included are:
Study skill
Cornell Note taking
Test-Taking Skills
Socratic Seminars

Portfolio Projects
Organization Skills
Inquiry
Presentations

College Exploration
Strategies for Success
Collaboration
Critical Reading and Writing

The AVID elective class can be challenging and rigorous. It will require a commitment
from the student to make the most of the class. With this commitment, you will find
AVID 10 to be engaging and rewarding.
Materials
You will be required to keep and AVID binder for the year. There are additional supplies
that will be needed in order to facilitate the organization of the binder:
2-3 3- ring binder
zipper pouch for supplies
Subject dividers
loose leaf paper
One or more colored highlighters
pens and pencils
Daily planner (one will be provided to you by school but you may supplement with one
of your choosing)
Classroom Policies:
1. Students must maintain a positive attitude which includes:
Always being prepared with materials and assignments in AVID elective
and other content area classes.
Taking pride in work turned in to AVID and other content area classes.
Demonstrating leadership and a willingness to participate
Demonstrating an appreciation of being challenged in all areas of learning.
2. Students will be dedicated to completing the AVID class work, homework, and
several projects. Failure to complete these assignments will dramatically impact
grade, may result in exclusion from AVID field trips, and may be the cause for
removal from the AVID program.

3. Listening and Speaking Courtesy is mandatory. No student will disrupt the


learning process of another student.
4. School lateness and attendance policy will be followed.
Grading Information:
Grading procedures will adhere to the BCPS grading policy and initiatives. Please check
BCPS One for you most up to date grade.
