VIEW FROM
THE DESK OF THE
GENERAL MANAGER
From where I sit, it sometimes seems as though our world is
dominated by emails and paperwork. However, there are many things
that happen throughout a year that are worth reflecting, to put some
perspective around the efforts of so many people.
2014, where has it gone? At the start of November, which is when I am writing 36 Bunker Road, Victoria Point
this, we have already welcomed 35 new residents in to the village, with another

9 waiting to move in as soon as we complete their units. This is significant,

because we so often measure our efforts by the buildings we develop, or the
landscaping we create. By the way, dont miss the opportunity to inspect our new
units with exclusive bush outlook and huge decks. While these are significant,
the real measure of importance is people. Every individual is respected at
Renaissance and this is what I admire about our staff, who consistently respect
the dignity of each resident, even when it is unpleasant to do so. After all, our task
is to create vibrant retirement communities that our residents can be proud of.
This pride was no better demonstrated than in our two major events for the year,
The Art and Craft Showcase and the Spring Fair. Both these events were a
showcase of residents producing wonderful creative works and displaying them
in a cooperative manor to the multitude of visitors who attended both events.
Renaissance is honoured to have established some longstanding relationships
with clubs & associations. Helen Hinwood and I were pleased to assist Probus
Association of Qld in being joint MCs at their annual Friendship Day in August.
In addition we were involved in the very successful delivery of the Cleveland
Bowls Club Strawberry Competition.
Everyone who is considering the option of moving to a retirement village should
be provided the opportunity to research and learn as much as possible, prior to moving in. To this end we have
experienced great success with our Information Days and more recently introduced Information Evenings. These
are open to both future residents and family members and enable people to meet residents, chat with them and
discuss the way villages operate, including the things that may concern you.
The list of events at the village is endless, but all represent a desire to open our doors and our closets for visitors to
discover what life is really like inside Renaissance village. Gardeners were welcomed to our Garden Tours, travellers
joined one of our staff and some residents for a trip to Taiwan, and residents continued to be as active as ever with
numerous functions and over 50 different activities to choose
from each week.
To help you celebrate Christmas, we have included a gift of
some seeds to plant flowers in your garden as a reminder that
life really is about caring and sharing and is a gift that blooms
when shared with others.

I trust you all have a blessed and joyous Christmas season.

Spring Fair

Spring was in the air and the gardens in full bloom at

Renaissances annual Spring Fair, Sunday, 19 October.

Crowds of visitors took the opportunity to enjoy the

entertainment, make purchases at the many market and
product stalls, participate in special information sessions
and garden tours, and generally take in the relaxed and
happy atmosphere of this fun filled day. There was definitely
something for everyone with the train a popular return
attraction for visitors of all ages!
Resident volunteers who participated in the day showcased their home with much pride and enthusiasm.
They were eager to talk about the village along with
the many activities and facilities on offer as well as the
increased network of friends that they had made.
Volunteers and staff were delighted to welcome back
visitors from previous years as well as newbies who
were seeing the village for the first time and keen to
ask questions informally on village life and retirement
living in general.
Many visitors welcomed the chance to take a leisurely
stroll through the display villas. From the observations
made, it was obvious that the practical designs and
quality of construction and fittings were a real highlight
along with many of the special features which are
automatically included as standard in the villas.
Input and ideas have already been sought from residents,
staff and the local community participants for next year.
Our aim is to continue to offer increased variety and
create even more interest and appeal for visitors so
that this annual event on the Renaissance calendar is
assured of ongoing success in the years ahead.
If you are keen to be part of our 2015 Renaissance
Fair, please contact our office on 3821 1611 to register

Taiwan Tour
A group of residents from Renaissance recently returned
from a memorable Trade Travel tour of Taiwan. A small
island country in North East Asia, Taiwan is unique in
many ways and provided an interesting glimpse of Asian
culture without any of the usual drawbacks.
Taiwan is a very advanced country, half the size of
Tasmania, with a population equal to the whole of
Australia. And yet, while the cities are large and busy,
the country areas are a lot less populated. With only 4%
unemployment, Taiwan looks and feels prosperous and
is clean and safe.
Our group enjoyed many highlights including travel
by coach, gondola, high speed train, MRT (Mass
Rapid Transit) in cities, and relaxed ferry trips. As an
open minded country, many cultures and religions are
accepted there.
We felt privileged to be one of the few Western groups
which have visited Taiwan. At all times the locals were
friendly, helpful and welcoming. We visited various
temples, memorials, and museums including a huge
Buddhist monastery.
As one of the largest producers and exporters of
Phalaenopsis orchids, there were magnificent displays
everywhere we went. With a sub-tropical climate similar
to Rockhampton, the fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood
gave us an exceptional culinary experience, with influences
from Japan, Korea and China.
Our visit to the magnificent Taroko marble gorge on
the east coast was a highlight comparable to other
great natural wonders of the world. Taiwan is definitely
a place worth visiting and would suit those with all levels
of travel experience.
