    If a person has swallowed an acid or burning poison like kerosene, give them sips of milk or water and take them to a health center immediately without making them vomit as that could cause more burning. If someone swallows a non-acid poison such as berries, seeds, mushrooms, pesticides or medicine and is conscious, give them sips of water and rush them to a health center; do not induce vomiting but save vomit samples to help identify the poison. This information was provided by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society to educate the public on basic first aid for poisoning as part of their campaign to have a first aider in every home.

    RED CRESCENT FIRST AID TIPS

    Poisoning
    If a person has swallowed an acid or burning poison, such as kerosene:
    1. Give sips of milk or water to the

    victim, making sure she does not


    choke.
    2. Help the victim to the health centre
    immediately.

    DO NOT make a person vomit acid


    poison, as this will cause more burning.

    If a person has swallowed a poison that is not acid (for example, poisonous
    berries, seeds, mushrooms, pesticide or medicines) and is still awake:
    1. Give sips of water to the victim, making sure she does not choke. Help the
    victim to the health centre immediately.
    2. Do not induce vomiting. If the victim vomits on her own however, bring a sample
    to the health centre so medical personnel can identify the poison.
