EE11001 Tutorial 3 (Three Phase Circuits and Electrical Measurements)

1) Find v ab (t ) , vbc (t ) and v ca (t ) for a three phase, star connected generator with
Va = 15 kV ( rms )90 o and a-b-c sequence.

v ab (t ) = 36.8 cos wt + 120 o kV , vbc (t ) = 36.8 cos(wt )kV , v ca (t ) = 36.8 cos wt 120 o kV ]

2) A high-voltage generator is connected to a 3-phase wye connected load through a


transmission line. Each phase of the line has impedance Z l , and the load is a balanced
wye with branch impedence Z. Line to line voltage, Vab = 45kV (r.m.s ) ,

Z l = (0.5 + j 3) , Z = (4.5 + j9) . Find the line currents, power consumed by the
load and line losses.
[Ans: 2 kA (rms); 54 MW, 6 MW]
3) Three resistive loads, Ra=20 , Rb=15 and Rc=20 are connected to a 50 Hz,
three phase, four wire system as shown in Fig 1. Other circuit parameters are
Vp=130V (r.m.s) and Zg=(0.2+j0.4) . The impedances of the lines connecting the
loads to the service panel are assumed to be negligible.
i) Find the total power delivered to the loads,
ii) Find the current in the neutral line.

4) In question (3), if the neutral line is removed to produce a three phase, three wire
system, find the line currents and total power delivered to the 3 resistive loads.

5) Calculate the readings of two wattmeters (W1 & W2) connected to measure the total
power for a balanced star connected load fed from 3 phase, 400 V (r.m.s) balanced
supply with phase sequence R-Y-B. The load impedence per phase is (20+j15) .
Also find the line and phase currents, power factor, total power, total reactive VA and
total VA.

6) Each phase of a star connected load consist of a non-reactive resistance of 100 in
parallel with a capacitor of 31.8 F. Calculate line current and power absorbed, total
KVA and power factor when connected to a 416 V (r.m.s), 3 phase 50 Hz supply.

7) Three single phase supply, mutually displaced by 120 in time with magnitude of V
volts supplying 3 single phase loads of resistance of R. What will be the total power
consumed by the load for the following cases:

8) A moving coil instrument gives full-scale deflection with 15 mA and has a
resistance of 5 . Calculate the necessary components in order that the instrument
may be used as i) a 2 A ammeter; ii) a 100 V voltmeter.

9) A moving iron voltmeter has an inductance of 0.5H and 2000. Its full-scale
deflection is 100V. The instrument is designed for 50 Hz circuit. Suggest
modifications so that the same voltmeter can be used in an application for measuring
voltage 5 times higher.

10) Five lamps having resistance 185 , 205 , 215 , 195 and 200 respectively
are operated in series from the main supply. A voltmeter of 1100 resistance is
connected to the 200 lamp and reads 85V. What is the supply voltage ? Find the
minimum resistance the voltmeter should have in order that the normal voltage across
the 200 lamp shall not change by more than 0.5 % when the voltmeter is connected.

11) A wattmeter has a current coil of 0.03 resistance and a pressure coil of 6000
resistance. If the load takes 20A at a voltage of 220V and 0.6 p.f., calculate the
percentage error if the wattmeter is so connected that:
i) The current coil is on the load side;
ii) The pressure coil is on the load side.
What load current would give equal errors with the two connections ?

12) While performing a load test on a 3-phase wound rotor induction motor by twowattmeter method, the readings obtained on two wattmeters were 14.2 kW and 6.1
kW and the line voltage was 440V. Calculate,
i) True power drawn by the motor;
ii) Power factor;
iii) Line current.
[Ans: 8.1 kW; 0.2246(lag); 47.26 A]

13) A three-phase balanced wye-delta system has a line voltage of 208 V(rms). The
total real power absorbed by the load is 1200 W. If the power factor angle of the load
is 20 lagging, determine the magnitude of the line current and the magnitude of the
load impedence per phase in the delta.
[Ans: 2.05 A(rms); (95.34+j34.70) ]

14) A balanced three-phase source serves three loads as follows:


Load 1: 24 kW at 0.6 lagging p.f.
Load 2: 10 kW at upf
Load 3: 12 kVA at 0.8 leading p.f.
If the line voltage at the loads is 208 V(r.m.s) at 50 Hz, determine the line current and
the combined power factor of the loads.
Determine the line voltage and power factor at the source if the line impedence is
Z line = 0.05 + j 0.02 .

15) In the balanced three-phase system shown in Fig. 2, the line voltage is 34.5 kV
(rms) at 50 Hz. Find the values of the capacitors C such that the total load has a power
factor of 0.94 leading.
