Course Description
Design & Documentation Systems Course is a Technical Core of the Bachelor of Science in
Industrial Technology program. The concepts covered in the class on design and
documentation systems are widely used in business and industry for technical
communication. The course provides an overview of computer aided design (CAD)
principles and applications with emphasis on product development process, design process
management, and design review using AUTOCAD 2012 software as a hands-on approach
to learning CAD.
1

Course Goals and Primary Learning Outcomes

Primary Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to understand the basics of AutoCAD
software and its use in creating drawing elements. Specifically, learn
1. Identify the commands in the AutoCAD software menus, toolbars and ribbons
2. Solve drawing elements based on geometry, logic and design principles utilizing the
AutoCAD commands
3. Apply the AutoCAD commands, while creating fundamental drawing elements in
AutoCAD
4. Create and modify objects, determine layers to manage objects and parts of drawings,
create text (lettering) and accurate dimensions (documentation) suitable for several
classifications of drawings (e.g., Technical Drawing, Process Charts, Layout Drawings.
5. Select complex objects that are a powerful part of the AutoCAD program, along with
advanced modifying features to create new objects from existing objects
6. Identify advanced elements and features of AutoCAD such as advanced dimensioning
commands, using paper space for layouts, and plotting (producing paper copies)
7. Integrate simple objects into composite groups of objects for easier manipulation and
redrawing, using existing drawings in your new drawing, and determine utility features
that add speed and accuracy to the CADD drawing process

Peer Review Evaluation: Peer students from a project group will be given opportunity to evaluate
each of their fellow project members contribution on a scale of 100. The subsequent average of
all fellow project members evaluation will be used as a multiplier with the rest of the group
project grade for a given student.
Home works and assignments should be completed in Blackboard every week on time for
appropriate grade. The links for submission will automatically appear on dates mentioned on the
Schedule and disappear on the due dates. It is the Students responsibility to track the schedule
and complete the Home Work on time. Although, the faculty may send announcements and email
reminders for the benefit of students now and then, students have to still complete the items as
per schedule even otherwise.
Quizes are unannounced and will be held any time during any of the weeks. Typically quizzes
are drawing elements/assemblies to draw hands on in class using AutoCAD software.
Opportunity(s) for extra credit work may be provided for everybody solely based on instructors
discretion.
Class Project, Presentation and Reports:
Class project work could be done individually or as a group. In the case of class projects taken
up by a group of students, it should be justified with sufficient complexity to be approved. Also,
it is each and every project members responsibility to contribute towards the group project. In
the case of all reports, technical format is expected of students (MS Word document journal
templates would be provided). A significant percentage of the group project grading will be
based on peer evaluation of your project team mates. To avoid disputes within the teams,
students are encouraged to select members carefully and commit to collaborative working.
Students are also encouraged to change team mates not later than two weeks after starting work
towards project. Collaborative working is very critical in group projects and students are
expected to maintain professional working relationship.
The Class Project requires formulation of a design problem and defend it as a project proposal
presentation to the class, work on the design problem to find a solution & document it, defend
the final project presentation to the class, and write a technical report of the project. It is also
important to contribute equally when there is a group project situation as peer evaluation will be
utilized for grading as well. I recommend that students choose the group project members
prudently as your group project member will confidentially evaluate your contribution to the
project. Class Proposal Presentation and Project Presentation are both 12 min presentation with a
talk time of 10 min followed by Q&A. Students are free to use Microsoft/Apple products or SelfCreated Video Presentations or any other innovative ways to present their work. However, the
4

time limit has to be respected and self-arrangements to be made for their innovative
presentations. For example, you could use your own laptop or check out a laptop from library
with all necessary software to make your presentation.

Make up Policy
Class assignments, quizzes, reports, exams and presentations cannot be made up beyond the due
date unless per arranged by yourself and the instructor, professional conduct is expected of
students. Late work is accepted only if the student arranges alternatives in advance with the
instructor. Late assignments and reports will not be graded.

Study Expectations:
It is usually expected that students will spend approximately 2 hours of study time outside of
class for every one hour in class. Since this is a 3-unit class, you should expect to study an
average of 6 hours outside of class each week. Some students may need more outside study time
and some less. Please see below for some study tips.
1. Actively read the textbook and articles assigned throughout the course prior to class.
2. Give your best effort to actively work on improving your drawing reading and drafting
skills.
3. Pay attention to the instructions on home works and avoid making silly excuses of
ignorance.
4. Bring positive energy to every class and offer advice to help improve the course.
5. Treat everyone involved in this course with respect.
For free tutoring on campus, contact the Learning Center
(http://www.fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/lrc/) in the Collection Level (basement level) of the
Henry Madden Library. You can reach them by phone at 278-3052.

Communication
Students are expected to use Email and Blackboard for communication of course information
and updates. Especially, course announcements would be posted using the Blackboard
announcements feature and all students are expected to check for updates at least twice a week.
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to check on announcements made while you
were away both in class and online. Please contact a fellow student who attended the class or
the faculty directly to keep up with updates and class progress. Pleading ignorance (includes
failure to check email due to work, personal or other reasons) to class activities is not acceptable.
Checking your csufresno.edu email is also important. Students have to check email at least twice
a week.
5

I will definitely review email. It is likely that I will review at least twice a week; however,
students cannot depend on this as I might be busy with other academic and research affairs.
Consequently, plan your time accordingly In that event, refer to the class syllabus, course
orientation materials and black board page before contacting the faculty. Make sure that you
mention the class number, section, your full name and an unassuming background on subject
matter under question before sending emails to faculty.

Participation Standards
Students are expected to attend each and every class. The importance of attending all classes
cannot be overemphasized. Students are expected to notify the instructor in the event of each and
every unavoidable absence.

Members of the CSU Fresno academic community adhere to principles of academic integrity
and mutual respect while engaged in university work and related activities. You should:
a) understand or seek clarification about expectations for academic integrity in this course
(including no cheating, plagiarism and inappropriate collaboration)
b) neither give nor receive unauthorized aid on examinations or other course work that is
used by the instructor as the basis of grading.
c) take responsibility to monitor academic dishonesty in any form and to report it to the
instructor or other appropriate official for action.
Instructors may require students to sign a statement at the end of all exams and assignments that
I have done my own work and have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance on this
work. If you are going to use this statement, include it here.

Cheating and Plagiarism:

"Cheating is the actual or attempted practice of fraudulent or deceptive acts for the purpose of
improving one's grade or obtaining course credit; such acts also include assisting another student
to do so. Typically, such acts occur in relation to examinations. However, it is the intent of this
definition that the term 'cheating' not be limited to examination situations only, but that it include
any and all actions by a student that are intended to gain an unearned academic advantage by
fraudulent or deceptive means. Plagiarism is a specific form of cheating which consists of the
misuse of the published and/or unpublished works of others by misrepresenting the material (i.e.,
their intellectual property) so used as one's own work." Penalties for cheating and plagiarism
range from a 0 or F on a particular assignment, through an F for the course, to expulsion from the
university. For more information on the University's policy regarding cheating and plagiarism,
refer to the Class Schedule (Legal Notices on Cheating and Plagiarism) or the University Catalog
(Policies and Regulations).

Computers:
"At California State University, Fresno, computers and communications links to remote
resources are recognized as being integral to the education and research experience. Every
student is required to have his/her own computer or have other personal access to a workstation
(including a modem and a printer) with all the recommended software. The minimum and
recommended standards for the workstations and software, which may vary by academic major,
are updated periodically and are available from Information Technology Services
(http://www.fresnostate.edu/adminserv/technology/) or the University Bookstore. In the
curriculum and class assignments, students are presumed to have 24-hour access to a computer
workstation and the necessary communication links to the University's information resources."

Disruptive Classroom Behavior:

"The classroom is a special environment in which students and faculty come together to promote
learning and growth. It is essential to this learning environment that respect for the rights of
others seeking to learn, respect for the professionalism of the instructor, and the general goals of
academic freedom are maintained. ... Differences of viewpoint or concerns should be expressed
in terms which are supportive of the learning process, creating an environment in which students
and faculty may learn to reason with clarity and compassion, to share of themselves without
losing their identities, and to develop and understanding of the community in which they live . . .
Student conduct which disrupts the learning process shall not be tolerated and may lead to
disciplinary action and/or removal from class."
