Acquiringassetsabroad
ItisbecomingincreasinglyevidentthatdomesticcoaldemandisfaroutstrippingtheindigenousproductioninIndia.Thegap
betweendemandandsupplyiseverexpanding.Especiallysointhewakeofincreasedcapacityadditioninpowersectorwhich
predominantlycoaldependent.
Inspiteofbestefforts,realisticallyCILwouldnotbeabletosatiategrowingcoaldemand.LettersofAssurance(LoA)issuedsofar
arealreadyinexcessofCIL'sproduction.Presentanalysisindicatethattherewouldbeashortageof350MTsofcoalby201617.
Tomeetthisneedcoalimportisinevitable.
CILhastakenituponitself,intheinterestofmeetingthecountry'senergyrequirement,andisforayingintoforeignshoresfor
acquisitionofcoalproperties.ForthepurposeCILhasadoptedathreeprongedapproach.Acquisitionofcoalpropertiesdirectly

Oneoftheinherenttendenciesofcoalminingisdegradationofthelandandenvironment.CILconstantlyaddressestheimpactof
miningactivitiesacrossenvironmentalandsocialissues.Ecofriendlyminingsystemshavebeenputinplaceinallofitsmining
areas.Tomakeenvironmentalmitigationmeasuresmoretransparent,CILintroducedstateoftheartSatelliteSurveillanceto
monitorlandreclamationandrestorationforallopencastprojects.
CoalIndiahasmadeafforestationoveranareaofaround32,000Hectareswhilethetotalforestareadegradedduetomining
operationisaround12,800Hectares,whichmeans,foreveryhectareofforestlanddegraded,CILhasmadeplantationin2.5
Hectaresofland.
CommittedtominimizetheadverseimpactofcoalminingonenvironmentthroughwellstructuredEnvironmentManagementPlans
andsustainabledevelopmentactivities.
Asapartof'Clean&Green'programme,massiveplantationhasbeentakenupbyCILwhereverlandisavailable.CILhastilldate
plantedover73milliontrees.
ApositiveresultofthisefforttowardsimprovementofenvironmentthroughmassiveplantationundertakeninSingrauliCoalfields
since1985,issuchthattheanalysisfortheperiod19851995and19962002carriedoutbyConservatorofForestindicatesthat
theannualaveragemaximumtemperatureinSingraulihasdecreasedby0.4oCwhiletheannualaveragerainydaysincreasedby
11.2daysandaverageannualrainfallhasincreasedby105.6mm.
CILhasstartedintegrationofEnvironmentManagementSystem(ISO:14001)withQualityManagementSystem(ISO:9001)andtill
datehavesuccessfullyachievedcertificationof53ofitsprojects.Thisintegrationisbeingextendedtoallminesinphases.
