Mark 2:3-5 (NIV)

.Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not
get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus
and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When
Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
It was pretty evident that this paralyzed man needed healing. He had most likely been in
this condition for a long time and had a great deal of time to think about his condition. (Aren't
we all somewhat prone to that?) He had nothing to even help to pass the time. This man was
completely helpless.
In addition, the Old Testament indicates there is a strong connection between sin and
sickness. If one was to become ill he went to the priest with a sacrifice, not the local doctor
with health insurance. Since this was common to all there were plenty of folks to agree that
the man was paralyzed because of something he did wrong. Even Jesus' disciples believed
this principle. John 9:2 says: His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his
parents, that he was born blind?"
His four friends just wanted to help him. They had probably seen others healed and had
hope. Jesus was in the area and if they could just get this man to him... and their
determination had paid off. Jesus called this action faith. Belief that produces corresponding
action is faith. As Jesus proclaimed freedom from guilt the door was open to receiving
healing.
Feelings and thoughts of guilt hinder us from receiving the good things the Lord has
already provided for us. It hampers communication and breeds doubt. Those who have come
from religious traditions that are sin focused may struggle with guilt and condemnation. The
concept that Jesus was sacrificed once and for all seems too easy for us. Our fallen nature
insists we earn it, whatever it is.
Hope is a powerful force when it is based on truth. Don't allow disappointments from the
past hinder you. You have the ability and authority to refute arguments and theories and
reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of
God (2 Cor. 10:5 amp) and embrace the fullness of his love and provision for you.
